Gina Rinehart’s father, Lang Hancock, is well known as a pioneer of the iron ore industry in Australia but few realise Hancock started his mining career on a smaller scale and digging for a different substance – blue asbestos. Hancock and his partner started the mining operation at Wittenoom in the 1940s before selling it to another company, CSR, which mined the area for 20 more years. Wittenoom has become synonymous with an immense tragedy that unfolded upon thousands of the people who lived and worked there due to exposure to asbestos fibres. Had to cut off half an ear to get through some of the underlying tone towards Gina. But overall I can’t help but admire her. An only child born into an incredibly unique situation who’s gone on to not only 10 fold her fathers wealth but deliver what he was never able to. I find her story fascinating whilst complicated - for such enormous wealth there is a sad trade off of her personal life. Always a price to pay amassing and sustaining such significant wealth. Listen with an open mind.
Excellent journalism about a central Australian figure and industry

The Gina series is compelling listening. The production team has gone to a lot of effort in their research, tracking down numerous interview ease, both pro and contra their subject. While I see a minority of reviews, panning the series, I thought this they took a lot of effort to present a multidimensional and complicated picture of their subject matter. I think that it is an immensely admirable achievement to have built such a successful mining business. It has clearly provided immense benefits to Australia to have the tax and royalty revenue from the industry. By the same taken, it appears to be a business and an industry which has used its resources and power to achieve and democratic results. The portrait of Gina at the centre of the program is fascinating. She does seem to have a single-minded and iron determination to achieve her objectives, and there is much to admire in that. She also seems to be a flawed and problematic personality, with those flaws coming into deep relief in the context of her immense money. I’d love to see the mining industry subject to significantly higher taxes. That seems to me to be a fair way of regulating the industry.

Who screwed Millennials & Gina. Both come from one viewpoint pushing a left agenda. Bring on experts who sing only from your songbook forget the ones (majority) who disagree. Anyone can make an argument and agree with themselves and this podcast does. It’s a shame because apart from being almost as far left as communism the podcasts are pretty good.

The production is interesting and compelling; however, the interview with Gina’s son is handled so softly that it undermines the show’s stated aim of speaking truth to power. Why miss the opportunity to challenge him directly? Deference to power seems unavoidable.
