SAS veteran Mark Wales completed 4 tours of Afghanistan. He’s now calling for a full enquiry into Australia’s war in Afghanistan, which he calls a military defeat and disgrace. Wales has been a mental health advocate for many years now, having dealt with PTSD after his first tour of Afghanistan, but he’s been called upon to comment on the issue again recently in view of the allegations of war crimes made against some highly decorated members of the SAS who also served in Afghanistan.
The findings of the Brereton report into war crimes committed by Australian forces in Afghanistan were released in November 2020. The report exposed disturbing cultural elements in some sectors of the Australian Defence Force, most notably the SAS, but also noted that PTSD related to over-deployment of the SAS was a likely factor in decreased empathy in some combatants.
Mark Wales has just released a book called Survivor: Life in the SAS.
