I’m so torn about Do By Friday. It’s often hilarious, sometimes inciteful, and occasionally really sweet. The people and the characters have an incredible dynamic, and at its peak it makes me laugh harder than anything.
But it’s also very ableist. One of the hosts (Alex) is a neurominority, and a popular bit on the show is basically just relentlessly mocking her for her odd behaviour, or difficulty communicating. It feels poisonous. I feel like I’m Alex in a lot of ways, and Max and Merlin feel like the high school bullies I used to suck up to. Often funny, but often cruel.
I wish the show would focus on external stuff, and quit making fun of each other and by extension, the listeners.
