    Blindside #1 with Glitch

    On this episode Matt and returning special guest co-host Glitch get blindsided by their discussion of 1996's BLINDSIDE #1. Before talking about the character of Blindside, Matt attempts to blindside Glitch with the history of the most bizarre television show he's ever seen.  Proving himself prepared for Matt's nonsense, Glitch not only knows the show but adds an entirely new level of weirdness to the story.  What is the show you ask?  You'll just have to listen to the episode to find out.  Hint: it has a dog in it. After the tv talk is over, Matt and Glitch get down to business and talk about Blindside.  Is he Daredevil?  No, but not entirely no.  Is he The Matrix?  No, but kind of yes.  Does he look good in a hospital gown?  Most assuredly yes. Then Matt and Glitch are blindsided by the sudden appearance of listener favorite David Walton as he joins the conversation that has sort of been about this character named Blindside. But it's also about Poland's version of Captain America who has a mermaid for a sidekick.  There's probably some Night Man talk as well.  David explains the Spider-Man story "Lifetheft" to a befuddled Matt.  Look, it's a great episode of the show - that is something you shouldn't be blindsided to learn.     Devil Dinosaur Spring Fling with A. Lee Martinez

    On this episode Matt and returning special guest co-Night Man enthusiast A. Lee Martinez (author of THE AUTOMATIC DETECTIVE, THE LAST ADVENTURE OF CONSTANCE VERITY, and the upcoming UNBEARABLE) befriend one another after being exiled for preaching the forbidden word of 1997's DEVIL DINOSAUR SPRING FLING. So, as it turns out Lee is a huge fan of Devil Dinosaur and as it also turns out, this random one-shot from 1997 exists.  Seeing an opportunity to once again talk to his favorite author while not straying out of the 90's safe space that this show inhabits, Matt eagerly brought Lee back on. Here's the thing: Matt has no idea what in the world(s) a Devil Dinosaur is (and don't even get him started on Moon-Boy).  Until this apparent "spring fling", Matt had never read a comic featuring Devil Dinosaur.  So with a lot that he needed to learn ahead... ...Matt promptly makes Lee spend roughly the first 30ish minutes of the show diving deep on nerdy talk about writing processes, the too high premium put on "original stories" (spoiler alert: there really are none), and what a writer's relationship to their own ideas should be. And THEN...they talk about the comic!  It's no surprise that Lee makes one heck've a Devil Dinosaur pitchman, but you'll have to listen to the episode to hear that.  So what are you waiting for?     X-Men 2099 #1 with Mat Elfring

    On this episode Matt and special guest co-host from the futurrrrrrre (insert echo effect here) Mat Elfring (communications manager at Oni Press) try not to reveal which Mat(t) is the secret villain as they discuss 1993's X-MEN 2099 #1. Before the 2099 of it all, Matt and Mat spend some time heaping much deserved praise on another Matt.  In this case it's writer/artist Matt Kindt and his incredible new comic of MIND MGMT: NEW & IMPROVED (from Oni - issue one is available NOW and IT HAS A CHROMIUM COVER)! Then we're off to the year 2099 where things are...different...sort of. There's a Spider-Man swinging around.  A Doom has some political schemes.  A Hulk is likely rampaging about.  A Punisher is punishering.  A Ghost Rider will eventually be ghost ridering.  You get it. And now there's an X-MEN!  (At least, there is the start of an X-MEN). Mostly Matt and Mat try to figure out if this is a really good bad comic or a really bad good comic? Also, is it smart to ride a horse on a balcony?  It doesn't seem like a good idea, but this isn't a podcast known for it's horse expertise, so we could be wrong.     Nightmares on Elm Street #1 with Bobby Trippett

    On this episode Matt and special guest co-host Bobby Trippett (from the GRINDBIN PODCAST) have been where the river ran and avoided drownin' in a sunless sea in order to discuss 1991's NIGHTMARES ON ELM STREET #1. Is this episode about the man of our dreams Freddy Krueger?  Yes it is.  Eventually. First Matt gets very personal and tells the story of when he first met his wife and why the date June 13th holds a special place in his heart.  It's a sweet story that has all of the necessary ingredients (a Pinky and the Brain t-shirt, the somewhat remembered Ivan Reitman movie SIX DAYS, SEVEN NIGHTS, the band Stabbing Westward, a weekend pass to Wizard World Chicago 1998, and HALLOWEEN H20) to create a love that lasts a lifetime. But then it's time to do the Freddy -- and there is no better person than Bobby to do the Freddy.  That's not an innuendo.  It's a fact.  Bobby's a true Fredhead, a Dream Warrior, possibly even a Dream Master and he expertly navigates us through this rather insane comic. This episode is so great that Matt only briefly mentions Night Man (who, by the way, could totally kick Freddy's ass).     The Night Man vs. Wolverine #0 with A. Lee Martinez

    On this episode Matt and special guest co-host A. Lee Martinez (author of MONSTER, CHASING THE MOON, GIL'S ALL FRIGHT DINER, and more!) get trapped in a Murderworld/sewer/abandoned funhouse and decide that the only way out is to talk about 1995's THE NIGHT MAN VS. WOLVERINE #0. Yes, your eyes and ears are not deceiving you, Night Man (or, "The Night Man" as he's apparently called - Matt refuses to accept this because he's always known Johnny Domino as Nightman) is actually here and he's (inexplicably) brought Wolverine with him! Both Matt and Lee think Night Man is cool, so if you're a skeptic then you better prepare to have your mind changed. In fact, Lee is such a big Night Man fan that he sent a letter enclosed in an illustrated envelope to Marvel imploring them to not cancel the comic.  That's some true dedication!     Wildthing #1 with Ian Anderson

    On this episode Matt and returning special guest co-host Ian Anderson flunk out of Arcade Officer Academy for not knowing how to handle a "hot program" - which is something they would've learned if they weren't too busy talking about 1993's WILDTHING #1. Who is Nikki Doyle?  Is she the titular Wildthing? These are questions that will (possibly) be answered, but first Matt decides to share his aspirations of becoming his neighborhood's resident Doctor Doolittle and then mixes up the Pet Shop Boys with Erasure. Proving himself to be the more professional host, Ian comes to the episode having done actual research on WILDTHING and Marvel UK in general.  So listen for his voice if you want to learn something.     Waterworld: Children of Leviathan #1 with Sebastian O'Brien

    On this episode Matt and special guest mariner Sebastian O'Brien (host of TENTPOLE TRAUMA) worry that they'll never find dry land without a helpful map/back tattoo of an arrow pointing up, so they bide their time on the trimaran by discussing 1997's WATERWORLD: CHILDREN OF LEVIATHAN #1. It needs to be said right up front, Sebastian is a big WATERWORLD fan - so if you've come here looking for non-stop dunking (nailed it!) on the movie then you might as well swim along to another podcast that is more suited to your anti-WATERWORLD agenda. Matt, on the other hand, is indifferent to WATERWORLD but he sure does love weird comics that star characters Kevin Costner has portrayed on the big screen.     The New Guardians #1 with Daniel G. Wilson

    On this super-sized episode Matt and special guest co-host Daniel G. Wilson try to figure out what the heck those little blue guys on Oa were thinking as they discuss 1988's THE NEW GUARDIANS #1. Do you like comics that use racial and cultural stereotypes as superpowers?  Well, then you are in luck... ...Matt, on the other hand, clumsily tries to navigate the landmines he set for himself because he's the one who chose the comic.  Ever the good sport, Daniel brings a high level of thoughtfulness, nuance, and sophistication to the discussion -- which are all things The New Guardians #1 lacks.  Matt's awkwardness aside, this turns out to be a great conversation about race and representation in comics. Also, both Daniel and Matt share their love for the writing of the great Dwayne McDuffie. Hopefully Matt didn't mention Nightman (but knowing him, he probably did).
