Podcast #49 - SDHist at the USNWC 2 of 3

Podcast #49 - SDHist at the USNWC 2 of 3

This is the second of the three podcasts including discussions with Museum Currator Rob Doane, Designer of GMT Games Battle of the American Revolution - Mark Miklos, Designer Volko Ruhnke and YouTuber Mike "Zilla Blitz" Smart.

We have produced for your enjoyment a three-part series of discussions on the August 2023 Event by San Diego Historical Games Convention at the US Naval War College Museum in Newport, Rhode Island. The event was three days of historical tours and gaming including tours of the Battleship USS Massachusetts, various sites that were part of the Battle of Rhode Island, Tours of the Museum at the Navy War College and Tours of the Navy War College itself. The tours were conducted by historians, game designers and professional wargamers to add to the color and background. Gaming at the Museum was incredible as we played, flanked by torpedoes, models, historical documents and displays of items of historical significance to the US Navy.

The convention was attended by a host of designers, professional gamers, hobby gamers and other interested parties. Of course, the museum is on base but our evenings and lunches were spent in the picturesque and historical town of Newport Rhode Island. We had such a great time; we are planning our return in 2024.

Fantastic ConSim podcast that goes where others don’t

I stumbled onto Harold on Games whilst looking for interviews with a game designer I’m interested in. I liked what I heard so much I went back and listened to the rest, but not only that, every new episode goes straight to the front of the queue.

Why is Harold on Games different? Not only is he a fan and a great interviewer, but he is also a peer of the designers he chats with as a designer himself. The result is conversations that cover game design, hobbies, work and everything in between.

The best strategy boardgame designers

Interviews with the best strategy and war gamers designers working today; Harold really knows his stuff as a designer and someone who knows the industry.

Used that background he really gets ‘under the hood’ with each interviewer about their designs, their design methods, and what inspires them. And some extra fun at the end of each episode about books, TV, movies, etc. Highly recommend this podcast for game and history fans.

Study of obsession

Great podcast. I was directed here from two other podcasts, Wild Weasal and RitV, and I must say that you’ve captured my attention completely. I’ve only listened to the first two episodes, but I love that you really allow your guests to explore the nuances of their obsessions. Too many other interviewers spend more time talking than listening.

I don’t know whether you take requests but, as a solo gamer for at least half of my game time, I’d love to hear an interview with John Butterfield. I am almost obsessed with Fields of Fire too: a flawed masterpiece. Ben Hull is not often heard from, and an interview with him would be welcome and perhaps a first.

Anyway, thanks for the production. Keep it coming.
