The Real Reason Your Wardrobe Still Feels Confusing (and what to do about it)

Podcast Shownotes In this episode, I’m talking about why real style starts within, not from endless outside fixes. Inspiration from Instagram, friends, celebrities, and everywhere else can be brilliant — but until you understand your own inherent personal style, it all tends to feel confusing and disconnected. After 16 years as a personal stylist and having looked inside hundreds of wardrobes, I’ve seen the same two reasons people struggle again and again. In this episode, I break down what they are, why they keep happening, and the practical steps you need to take to start dressing with more clarity and confidence. I’m also sharing a little update from the New Day Originals pop-up boutique in Notting Hill, where I’ll be styling the new collection tomorrow and chatting about this very topic in real life. In this episode, you’ll learn: Why looking outward for style inspiration only gets you so far. The difference between inspiration and true personal style. The two main reasons people struggle with their wardrobes. How to start uncovering your own style from the inside out. Why your wardrobe feels easier once you know what is actually you. Mentioned in this episode: New Day Originals pop-up boutique, Notting Hill. Styling the new collection tomorrow. Personal style clarity, wardrobe confidence, and dressing from within. Episode takeaway: If your wardrobe feels confusing, the answer may not be to buy more, copy more, or follow more trends. The real shift happens when you stop looking for an outside fix and start getting honest about your own style identity. Style becomes so much easier when you stop asking, “What should I wear?” and start asking, “What already feels like me?” Want more style tips? Style Has No Age: Lady Terese Robinson on Confidence, Creativity and Personal Style

In this episode of The Style Stories Podcast, I’m joined by the wonderful Lady Terese Robinson — novelist, former PR and events professional, and wife of the late, great Sir Ken Robinson, whose TED Talk Do Schools Kill Creativity? became one of the most watched of all time. Lady T has lived a richly varied life, from the UK to Los Angeles, and her style story is every bit as interesting as her career journey. We talk about how style evolves over time, why experimentation is an important part of finding your own look, and how she always returns to her core style personality: undone, sexy, classic and chic. We also get into one of my favourite subjects — the idea that style is ageless. We challenge the outdated, fear-based rules the media still pushes about what women “should” or “shouldn’t” wear at certain ages, and make the case for dressing in a way that feels true to you, not dictated by somebody else’s opinion. One of the most powerful parts of style is how it makes you feel. When you wear something that feels like you, you move differently, show up differently and feel more confident. In this conversation, Lady T and I talk about how to notice what works, why it works, and how paying attention to that can help you build a wardrobe that feels more and more natural over time. This episode is a celebration of individuality, confidence and the freedom to dress without apology. Episode description Lady Terese Robinson joins me to talk about style, identity and confidence at any age. We discuss why experimentation matters, why style is ageless, and why the best outfits are the ones that make you feel most like yourself. How To Find Your Personal Style in 2026 (Without Generic Dated 'Rules')

In this episode, we’re throwing out the tired, generic style advice that’s been making women feel like they’re getting it “wrong” for years. You don’t need another list of “must-haves”, body shape diagrams, or colour rules – you need to start asking one powerful question: “Is this me?” Not: Does this flatter my figure? Is this the right colour for my undertone? Is this on trend for my age? Those questions are rooted in shame, judgment and external rules. This conversation is about coming back to you. In this episode, I talk about: Why generic style rules are failing you (and why they feel so flat and boring) The problem with shame-based advice like “does this flatter me?” Replacing “Is this flattering?” with “Is this me?” as your core style filter How your current wardrobe is already full of clues about your true style What your home, decor and environment reveal about what you’re genuinely drawn to How your upbringing, music, culture and memories quietly shape your taste Why we’ve never been taught to trust our instincts with style – and how to change that A simple process to start decoding your personal style from what you already own You’ll learn: How to spot the pieces you actually love versus the ones you “should” wear How to use your wardrobe, your home and even your Pinterest saves as a style mood board How to stop feeling like you’re “failing” at style and start feeling at home in your clothes Practical questions to ask yourself when you try something on so you know instantly if it’s you Try this after you listen: Go to your wardrobe and pull out the 5 things you wear on repeat Ask: What do these have in common? Shape, colour, fabric, mood? Then walk around your home and notice the same patterns in your decor Start building your outfits from those clues – not from someone else’s rulebook If you’re ready to stop outsourcing your style to strangers on the internet and start trusting your own instincts, this episode is for you.   Sign-up to Substack for more advice here https://lisagillbe.substack.com Here's my Instagram - follow Lisa here: https://www.instagram.com/lisegillbestylist/?hl=en

How to Declutter Your Wardrobe and Reset your Style this Spring

Reframe how you think and feel about decluttering your wardrobe—with zero guilt, and a lot more you. In this episode of The Style Stories Podcast, I’m breaking up with the outdated rule: “If you haven’t worn it in a year, get rid of it.” That tiny sentence has caused more anxiety, shame, and decision-paralysis than almost anything else in your wardrobe. Instead, I walk you through a fresh, kinder, more intelligent way to edit your clothes so your wardrobe reflects who you are now—not a past version of you. We dive into: Why you’re not wearing so many of the clothes you own (and it’s not because you’re lazy or bad with style) The TWO key questions to ask yourself instead of “Have I worn this in a year?” How to work out whether something still feels like you today How to spot where your wardrobe is unbalanced (workwear, going-out, occasion pieces, everyday “in-between” outfits) Why chasing a perfect 10-piece capsule can actually block your personal style How to start listening to your gut so getting dressed feels easier, lighter, and more you If you’re ready to stop feeling guilty every time you open your wardrobe and start making calm, confident decisions about what stays and what goes, this episode is for you. Join the FREE Wardrobe Decluttering Challenge If you want to put this into action, you can join my free decluttering challenge inside my Facebook group.
