EP.193 The Design Brief - Michael Henderson (Holes in the Ground)

The Design Brief segment of The Golfing Greenkeeper Podcast is proudly brought to you by McMahons. Check out their website to get a better understanding of their suite of services and outstanding portfolio of work at www.mcmahons.net.au From humble beginnings in Melbourne after finishing school, Michael Henderson found a desire in wanting to understand golf course architecture much more. He read all he could find and put himself on a path to earning an opportunity to work in this rather niche industry. From submitting design work to a golf course architecture competition, to working at Royal Melbourne Golf Club, Michael wanted in on the golf architecture world and nothing was going to stop him. He gained a couple of different opportunities over time working with a couple of well known firms, including shaping on site helping to build the well known and now famous Tara Iti in New Zealand. Fast forward to today and Michael is now a member of the Society of Australian Golf Course architects having completed his own work to redesign an amazing transformation of Mallacoota Golf Club after the devastating 2019 bushfires, along with recent work at Flinders Golf Club on Victoria's Mornington Peninsula. Come along for the ride as we launch into Michael's background and career, along with some fun and interesting discussions around courses other than 18 holes. You hit 'em clean and we'll keep 'em green! The Golfing Greenkeeper - Instagram The Golfing Greenkeeper - Facebook The Golfing Greenkeeper TV - YouTube Send me an email to - thegolfinggreenkeeper@gmail.com People and places mentioned in this podcast: Holes in the Ground Michael Henderson SAGCA Profile Society of Australian Golf Course Architects (SAGCA) The Lakes Golf Club Pennant Hills Golf Club Royal Lytham & St Annes Golf Club Sandhurst Club North Berwick Golf Club Hokitika Golf Club Royal Melbourne Golf Club Tom Doak Tony Cashmore Profile - Planet Golf Tara Iti Golf Club 13th Beach The Dunes Golf Links Renaissance Golf The National Golf Club - Gunnamatta Course Concord Golf Club 7 Mile Beach Clayton DeVries & Pont (CDP) Mallacoota Golf & Country Club Mallacoota's Story - The Victorian Bushfires Remembered Curlewis Golf Club Flinders Golf Club Wollongong Golf Club Alister MacKenzie Society Barwon Heads Golf Club Newgreens Chatswood Moore Park Golf Course Barnbougle - Bougle Run Kingston Heath Golf Club - The Furrows Latrobe Golf Club - The Island Commonwealth Golf Club Metropolitan Golf Club Crafter Mogford - Golf Strategies EP.187 The Design Brief - Scott Champion EP.78 Keeper of the Greens - John Mann EP.130 Keeper of the Greens - Adam Lamb

The golf course at Karratha is a local public community asset that not so long ago was upgraded from sand putting greens to grass greens which Callum was heavily involved with. The course also went through a redesign at the same time. Prior to his current position, Callum leaned his trade at Busselton Golf Club. After completing his time at Busselton, Callum was soon taking the controls leading the team at Busselton as superintendent where he was able to improve the course over a number of years. After a short stint away from the industry and back again, plans were being setup to redesign Karratha GC and Callum's name was being put forward as the man to take Karratha to the next level. Load up and get set for a trip to somewhere few people ever venture to in real life as Callum takes us through his career and what it's like looking after a unique Australian golf course in a magical and remote part of the country! The Design Brief segment of The Golfing Greenkeeper Podcast is proudly brought to you by McMahons. Check out their website to get a better understanding of their suite of services and outstanding portfolio of work at www.mcmahons.net.au Scott Champion might not quite be a household name just yet, but I'm certain you have heard of some of the work he has been involved with. An early part of Scott's golf course architecture career involved a start at Greg Norman Golf Course Design working with a couple of architects such as Bob Harrison and Harley Kruse. Fast forward a few years and Bob Harrison decided to start his own design firm and he asked Scott to join him in the business. Yes, Scott has been part of Harrison Golf since it's inception! Scott tells us about his early years getting into the industry after which we get stuck into one of Harrison Golf's more famous designs - Ardfin in Scotland. There's a great story here before we stop next to focus on a current Harrison Golf project in detail, being the redesign of the well known Newcastle Golf Club to the north of Sydney. This unique and very special two part podcast series is proudly brought to you by Dint Golf Solutions and you can check them out at www.dint.com.au Have you ever wondered what it takes to deliver a golf course for a tournament? Ever wondered about how everything gets done to present a golf course for a national televised tournament like the men's Australian Open but you don't see anyone working on the golf course? Well, if you've ever had a fleeting thought about what goes on behind the scenes of a golf course to prepare it for a tournament at the highest level, then this two part podcast series is for you! Part 2 brings you the final 2 days of course preparation for the men's Australian Open at Royal Melbourne. Mother Nature swings a full 180 from day 1, with showers and cold weather coming in. This significantly changes the earlier reserved directives from tournament officials and the shackles come off the greenkeeping staff. All the tricks are pulled out to bring as much life to the greens of the famed Composite Course and you'll hear the lengths the team goes to in an effort to get the most out of the greens. Part 2 also brings to life the personal element of tournament preparation with a few short interviews throughout the weekend sharing just what is involved in some of the detail of tournament prep through the eyes of the staff, and what it means to work at such an iconic golf course, during an iconic tournament, within a wonderful team! An big thank you goes to Royal Melbourne Golf Club's Director of Courses, Richard Forsyth, for allowing me the access and opening up to the team being involved in this project, and also to Beschen Pou who was with me every step of the way assisting in all the recording and capturing of the content. An enormous thank you to everyone working at the tournament, both Royal Melbourne course maintenance staff and course maintenance volunteers, that helped me create this podcast. A particular thank you and credit to each of these people as follows: Adrian Alley, Michael Clavin, Oliver Davis, Adam Dinte, Richard Forsyth, Craig Geeve, James Gorniak, Ben Hasker, Lauchy Hay, Matt Isbester, Harvey Jones, John Kaminski, Ronan Keating, Karyn Kremer, Ashleigh Larkin, Emma Lewis, Brad Milne, Stuart Moodie, Gerri O’Callaghan, Beschen Pou, Henry Sexton, Nic Staff, Paul Thomas, Jacob Warpinski.
