  1. The Myth of No Time

    1 MAY

    The Myth of No Time

How often do you find yourself saying "I just don't have time"? But is that really true, or a deeper reflection of our relationship with time itself? In this episode, we explore: The illusion of time poverty How busyness has become an identity Practical steps to redefine your relationship with time Understanding the Myth of No Time In my experience as a naturopath, I've encountered countless clients trapped in the belief that time is always running out. It's not always a lack of hours, but how we perceive and utilise them. Many describe a sensation of life speeding by, feelings of always being behind, and a persistent sense that they have too much to do. The Cultural Construct Around Busyness Busyness isn't merely about having a lot to do. It's become an identity, a badge of honor that signals relevance and worth. This societal pressure transforms our bodies into pressure cookers, leading to chronic stress, digestive issues, and burnout, not markers of success, but signs of imbalance. The Physiology of Busyness Chronic busyness pushes our bodies into survival mode. When we feel a perpetual lack of time, it triggers stress responses.  Our cortisol levels rise, muscles tense, and every system shifts into overdrive, often resulting in poor sleep, digestive problems, and hormonal imbalances. It's the body's way of crying out for space to heal. A Closer Look at Time Poverty The perception of time poverty is not just a philosophical concern but a physiological reality.  Feeling time-starved registers perpetually in the body as threat and scarcity. Healing, however, requires presence - both in mind and body. When burdened by perceived urgency, authentic rest feels unattainable and irresponsible. Reassessing Time and Identity We often confuse busyness with productivity, believing that our packed schedules reflect value. Yet, our bodies need rest and space. They require a time unclaimed by tasks and obligations. It's not just about organising better, but re-evaluating priorities and understanding what "no time" truly means in the context of our lives. Encouraging a New Perspective To change our relationship with time, we must start by telling the truth. It's crucial to recognise that "I don't have time" may actually mean "I'm prioritising others over myself," or "I'm afraid to slow down". By admitting this, you open doors to choice and freedom, allowing space for what genuinely matters. Practical Steps to Reclaim Your Time Reclaiming a healthier relationship with time isn't about squeezing more into your day. Rather, it's about allowing yourself the freedom not to do everything. This might mean saying no more often, leaving tasks undone, or creating moments of stillness amidst busyness. Radical Self-Care in a Busy World If you're looking to re-set and change our relationship with time, engage in small acts of self-care that might go against the cultural current.  Take a walk without your phone, savour meals without distractions, and create tech-free times. These simple practices build resilience and restore balance to your life. Cultivating Presence Ultimately, the myth of no time holds us back from our potential to live a healthy and full life. By shifting our perspective, we empower ourselves to enjoy life's moments more deeply and authentically. Healing begins not when life clears space, but when we choose to honour the present. Remember, your body knows time as a companion, not a constraint. 2. The Wellness Bypass

    17 APR

    The Wellness Bypass

The Wellness Bypass In the pursuit of wellness, have we unknowingly bypassed the very heart of healing? Are we so busy tracking our symptoms and adhering to strict health protocols that we've stopped addressing the underlying cause and are instead engaged in wellness bypass?  In this episode, we discuss what is becoming an increasingly more common phenomenon, including: What wellness bypass is and how it occurs when the pursuit of health distracts from deeper issues. Why true healing requires contact with reality and addressing emotional root causes. How to stop adding more practices, and instead take a more radical approach where we do less and listen more. Discovering Wellness Bypass When I initially encountered wellness bypass, I didn't have a name for it. I observed people rigorously adhering to health protocols - perfect diets, extensive supplement regimens, and tracking every conceivable metric.  Yet, they weren't healing. They were exhausted, disconnected, and joy was absent. This made me realise that wellness bypass occurs when health tools are used as substitutes for addressing life's deeper emotional challenges. The Illusion of Control In a culture obsessed with self-improvement, it's easy to mistake control for healing. The wellness industry, a multi-trillion-dollar behemoth, thrives on our desire to optimise everything. Yet this relentless pursuit can distance us from true healing. Healing requires presence, rest, and purpose, not endless optimisation. Three Pillars of Healing True healing does not lie in complexity. It resides in three foundational elements: presence, rest, and purpose. These pillars support the body's natural ability to heal when we provide the right environment. Presence - Being truly present means inhabiting your life, acknowledging what your body communicates without overriding it. Presence allows you to connect with your feelings, whether that's grief, joy, or anything in between, and creates space for genuine healing.   Rest - Rest is essential for biological repair. Beyond just sleep, it's about aligning with natural rhythms, embracing downtime, and connecting with nature. No supplement can replace the healing power of true rest. Purpose - Purpose gives direction to healing. When our lives have meaning—through relationships, passions, or contributions - we unlock new reserves of energy and rekindle our spirits. It's not the loud practices that heal but this quiet sense of meaning. Questions to Ponder If you suspect a wellness bypass, consider these questions:  Are your health practices enhancing your life or replacing it?  Do they leave you feeling calm and connected, or anxious and controlled?  Are you using wellness to connect with your body or to avoid feeling at all? Conclusion Wellness bypass is a subtle thief of true healing, masked as a productivity project.  Yet, by slowing down and simplifying, we can create the right conditions for our bodies to work their inherent repair magic.  Healing hasn't ever been about perfection; it's about listening and returning to what's real. 3. When You Can't Sleep

    When You Can't Sleep

Sleep, or the lack of it, is an all-too-common struggle that affects countless individuals. But a body that can't sleep, even when it's exhausted, is trying to tell us something. In this episode, we pull back the blanket on sleep, looking at:  Why insomnia isn't one-dimensional, but a multi-layered issue How our modern lifestyle often conflicts with our biological sleep needs Why awareness and acceptance of your body's signals are the first steps toward restful sleep. Exploring the Roots of Insomnia Insomnia arises from a blend of factors. It's rarely due to a single cause. Instead, imagine it as a tapestry woven from the strands of nervous system activity, hormonal shifts, emotional undercurrents, and lifestyle patterns.  With every late night, every glare from a screen, our natural need for rest gets drowned out by modern life's incessant demands. The Nervous System and Sleep Our bodies are often in a perpetual state of activation, constantly bombarded with stimuli ranging from screens and noise to responsibilities and emotions.  At night, if your body can't transition out of "go mode," sleep feels elusive. True rest requires a sense of safety, allowing the body to surrender. Hormonal Influences Hormones, particularly during transitional life phases like perimenopause and menopause, dictate sleep patterns.  These shifts result in lighter sleep and can even cause those frustrating early morning wake-ups. Understanding that your hormonal landscape is in flux can foster patience with this inevitable process. Emotional Landscapes at Night Emotions have a knack for surfacing when the world grows quiet. Unprocessed feelings (grief, worry, loneliness) often echo louder when the night falls. It's not just about sleeplessness; it's about something within you needing recognition. Creating the Right Conditions for Rest Sleeping is not a task we force; it's a state we cultivate. Our bodies thrive on rhythm and routine, something modern living often disregards. Nighttime Rituals as Acts of Reverence Consider bedtime routines as rituals, pathways from activity to stillness.  Begin an hour before bed: dim the lights, take a warm bath, sip calming herbal teas with chamomile or lavender, and choose comforting clothing. These small acts soothe the senses and prime your body for sleep. Understanding Physiology Issues like magnesium depletion, hormonal imbalances, or blood sugar instability can impact sleep. Investigating and addressing these health aspects are crucial steps in reclaiming restful nights. Practical Sleep Tips Aim for quality, restorative sleep. Maintain a consistent schedule, consider using magnesium glycinate to promote relaxation, and avoid stimulants like caffeine and alcohol before bed.  If restless, get up, engage in a quiet activity, and return to bed once tired. This reinforms the body that bed is a place for sleep, not stress. Embracing the Journey to Rest Thank you for joining me on this exploration into sleep and its challenges. Insomnia is a complex issue, interwoven with various elements of our lives.  By understanding its roots and cultivating a compassionate approach, we can gently ease ourselves back into restful, replenishing sleep. 4. It's Not Your Fault You're Sick

It's Not Your Fault You're Sick

Why is it that we can do 'all the right things' and feel unwell? Why is it we become sick, despite our best efforts to eat the right food and embrace the right habits? It's a question I return to often with patients in my clinic. But the reality is, it's not your fault you're sick, and in this episode we discuss why, including: Why illness isn't a personal failure but a reflection of our interconnected environment. How healing starts not with blame, but with awareness of what we can change. Ways to reconnect with nature and our body as an integral part of recovery. The Deep, Mysterious Well In my work, whether in patient sessions or writing my book, I often dwell on why we struggle to heal. Two thoughts persistently follow me: "Is it my fault I'm sick?" and "Why wouldn't I be?"  These thoughts unravel the complexities of illness in our interconnected world. The truth is, your illness isn't solely due to personal choices. You're influenced by family systems, communities, and global ecosystems. The question isn't just "Why am I sick?" but rather "Why wouldn't I be?"  Navigating a Toxic World Our world is filled with chronic stress, environmental toxins, and processed foods. We face unrelenting demands, fractured communities, and a life out of sync with natural rhythms.  In this toxic "soup," our bodies reflect these stresses. But sickness isn't a sign of weakness. Instead, it's an honest response to an unwell ecosystem. Beyond Blame: What Now? Healing isn't about eliminating blame. It's about awareness. It involves asking what you can shift today to support your wellbeing.  Change happens incrementally: one small decision at a time. Consider your capacity to make choices, no matter how small, that align you with healthier living and interactions. Reconnecting with Nature At the heart of healing lies a return to nature, the original healer. Nature functions as our biological guide and equaliser, reminding us of rhythms we have forgotten. Symptoms are not punishments; they're messages guiding us back to balance.  Healing in Connection We aren't meant to heal alone. Join others in realising that illness is not your fault, and believe in the possibility of healing through connections to nature, to each other, and to oneself. Whether through rest, nourishment, or mindful awareness, healing requires embracing the cycle of life we belong to. Remember: healing begins with awareness, the gentle turning to self-care, and the realisation that within us and around us lies the path to health.  Connect with Me Visit my naturopathic clinic at apothecabyanthia.com  Join the Staying Healthy Together Club for a deeper exploration of these practices  Highlights 00:20 Welcome to 'This Is How We Heal' 01:15 Understanding Illness: It's Not Your Fault 01:42 The Deeper Questions of Healing 03:40 The Toxic Environment We Live In 05:46 Interconnectedness and Shared Responsibility 06:49 Awareness: The First Step to Healing 07:50 Nature: The Ultimate Healer 09:18 Conclusion and Next Steps

  5. Gut Dysbiosis: When Your Inner Ecosystem Falls Out of Balance

Gut Dysbiosis: When Your Inner Ecosystem Falls Out of Balance

When balanced, the gut is like a thriving rainforest. But when imbalanced, it leads to what we call gut dysbiosis. And in my clinic, I'm witnessing more cases of imbalance than ever before, impacting overall health and wellness.  But why is that the case? In this episode, we discuss the gut, covering: What gut dysbiosis is and how it impacts health Key disruptors to our gut microbiome Pathways to healing and restoring balance Understanding Gut Dysbiosis: The Imbalanced Ecosystem The gut microbiome is a vast collection of microorganisms dwelling in harmony within us. These microorganisms, including bacteria, fungi, viruses, and parasites, are crucial for digestion, immunity, and even mental health through the gut-brain axis.  When this internal ecosystem thrives, our bodies function optimally. However, factors like medication, infection, and stress can strip it bare, leading to gut dysbiosis - where harmful microbes overshadow our beneficial bacterial allies. Our Microscopic Allies and Adversaries In a healthy gut, beneficial bacteria like bifidobacteria and lactobacilli predominate, supporting digestion and protecting the gut lining.  Conversely, dysbiosis sees the overgrowth of opportunistic strains and pathogens like Clostridium or parasites that disrupt gut health and promote inflammation.  Conditions such as Small Intestinal Bacterial Overgrowth (SIBO) and Large Intestinal Bacterial Overgrowth (LIBO) are manifestations of these imbalances. The Invisible Inheritance: Sources of Our Microbiome Our microbiome is a legacy, beginning with our parents' microbiomes before birth.  The maternal microbiome and mode of delivery play significant roles in shaping an infant's microbiome, influencing lifelong health.  Antibiotics, stress, diet, and environmental toxins further sculpt the diversity of our gut flora, often leading to dysbiosis when these influences are adverse or overwhelming. Lifestyle and Environmental Disruptors Modern life overwhelms the delicate balance of our microflora. Antibiotics and medications alter gut communities, while stress, poor diet, and environmental toxins (like chlorinated pools or antibacterial soaps) diminish microbial diversity.  Even lifestyle factors such as irregular sleep can impact gut health, underscoring the importance of holistic living in maintaining balance. Pathways to Healing: Restoring Harmony in the Gut Healing the gut isn't merely about eliminating harmful microbes; it involves nurturing a balanced ecosystem.  This begins with identifying root causes of imbalance, such as chronic stress or dietary deficiencies, and systematically addressing overgrowth and dietary intolerances.  Rebuilding the gut lining, promoting beneficial bacterial growth through probiotics and prebiotics, and ensuring a supportive environment through a nutrient-dense diet and adequate rest are all part of regaining equilibrium. Modern Healing Through Ancient Wisdom True healing requires reviving our relationship with food, nature, and our innate body's wisdom. Consider reflecting on these questions: 1. How has stress affected your digestion and overall health? 2. What foods or routines could be disrupting your gut health? 3. How can you incorporate more nature into your everyday life to support your internal ecosystem? Healing is a journey - one that requires curiosity and patience. If you resonate with these insights or need guidance on your journey, consider joining our clinic or membership for support and education. Until next time, remember that you are part of a larger ecological system, and nurturing your inner ecosystem is crucial to your overall well-being. Cultural Deprogramming: Reclaiming a Woman's Mind, Body & Spirit

From the things we tell ourselves to how we view our health and worth, patriarchy, colonialism, and capitalism have embedded themselves in our daily lives. In fact, even our most empowered acts of self-improvement can actually be disguised obedience.  In this episode, we take a deep dive into what we've been told and taught about being a woman, being beautiful, being good, and being well, including:  Recognising how patriarchal, colonial, and capitalist systems impact women's self-perception. Understanding cultural deprogramming as a means to reclaim self-trust and authenticity.  How to reclaim your mind, body, and spirit from systems that have taught us to doubt ourselves.  What If It's Not Us, but the Culture We Live In? What if the body was never the problem? What if the betrayal women feel is actually a consequence of a culture that taught them to distrust their own bodies?  These systems have historically whitewashed, greenwashed, purified, sanitised, and commodified the female body.  Colonialism didn't just conquer lands; it conquered the body, dictating that nature was something to be tamed, not trusted.  Patriarchy labelled our bodies as public property, to be judged, modified, and approved, while capitalism saw profit in our insecurities, rebranding oppression as self-care.  Even the modern wellness world, despite its intentions, often becomes another mask of control, promising liberation but selling perfection. Cultural deprogramming starts when we recognise this spell for what it is. To deprogram is to remember that our rhythms (menstrual, emotional, creative, and ancestral) are sacred.  These aren't flaws to fix but languages to listen to. It's about viewing our bodies not as projects but as places of wisdom. Healing as an Act of Rebellion Women often tell me they want to feel like themselves again. They long for a time when they felt freer, lighter, and more alive, unburdened by the expectations that came with adulthood.  What they truly desire isn't the old body, energy, or face; it's the freedom to be themselves, before they were told how to be. This longing isn't for who they were but for who they were before external forces moulded them. The women who had to be small to be loved, endlessly productive to be worthy, and smile through pain.  What they're truly seeking is liberation - not from their past selves but from the constraints that tie them down. It's freedom to belong to oneself and to nature.  Naming the forces that shaped us - white supremacy, patriarchy, and capitalism - reaffirms that our bodies have always been compasses, not burdens. Healing becomes an act of rebellion, refusing constant striving for truth and belonging to one's natural self. Small Acts of Reclamation This work begins with small acts of reclamation, questioning internal self-criticism and reconnecting with nature.  By walking barefoot, allowing sunlight on our skin, or simply eating from living soil, we reclaim our power and rhythms. Speaking about our bodies with new respect and creating rituals of refusal bolsters this reclamation.  Each small act loosens the old spell and opts into authenticity and self-trust.  Healing Is Possible If this resonates with you, understand that healing is possible. It begins with curiosity, not control, and nourishment, not restriction. 7. Sensory Disruption: Our Gateway to the World

    6 FEB

Sensory Disruption: Our Gateway to the World

We often think of seeing, hearing, tasting, touching, and smelling as passive processes. But they're also our body's earliest protectors and its most reliable guides. In a world that moves fast and overwhelms easily, our senses quietly signal when to soften, when to brace, and when we are safe enough to connect. The trouble is, modern life can dull those signals. Constant noise, stress, overstimulation, and disconnection pull us away from the very systems designed to anchor and restore us. In this episode, we explore: How our senses shape safety, presence, and regulation Why they become overwhelmed in today's world And simple, mindful ways to reawaken each sense so we can reconnect and heal Sensing Safety Our senses are like ancient sentinels, constantly surveying both our internal and external worlds. They whisper whether we are safe enough to connect or if we need protection. As Dr. Stephen Porges illuminates with his polyvagal theory, safety is the cure.  When we are in a safe and restful state, we engage our "rest and digest" mode, which counters the "fight or flight" response. Healing, therefore, is not a passive consumption but a full-bodied, sensory participation. The Melody of Hearing From the womb, we attune to sound. A mother's voice, the rustle of leaves, or the rhythm of our breathing, these sounds coalesce to create a symphony of life. Hearing involves tuning into tone, rhythm, and nuance, allowing the body to decide if it's safe to connect.  However, modern life bombards us with noise pollution, keeping us alert and eroding our ability to listen both to others and to ourselves. By restoring hearing through stillness and nature, we begin to regulate and heal. The Nourishment of Taste Taste is deeply intertwined with safety and love, evident from a child's first experience at the mother's breast.  Beyond flavour, taste is a compass that guides us to rest and digest. Yet, modern stress and processed foods can dampen this sense. By embracing mindful, seasonal eating and exploring the complexity of flavors, we rebuild trust with our instincts and rediscover joy. The Power of Smell Smell is primal, evoking memories and emotions from deep within. Yet, synthetic fragrances often mask natural aromas, dulling our perception. By rediscovering natural scents around us, we breathe life back into our sense of smell, grounding ourselves in the present. Seeing with the Heart Sight is more than what meets the eye; it's about connection and belonging. Art and nature, with their beauty, offer us medicine for the soul.  Under stress, our gaze narrows, but by mindfully expanding our view, we invite enchantment and awe - an essential step towards reconnecting with the world. The Embrace of Touch Touch is our first language, conveying safety and love. It's essential to healing, releasing hormones that foster trust and connection.  In today's world, touch is often replaced by tapping and scrolling, leaving us bereft of its healing power. By intentionally seeking tactile experiences, we remember our rightful place in the tapestry of life. Rediscovering our senses is a gentle act of reclaiming what it means to be alive. They are the keys to our healing, narrating when to soften, brace, open, or retreat. As we reconnect with our sensory wisdom, we shed layers of numbness and embrace the vibrant aliveness of being fully present.  If you found comfort in these words, please share them with someone who might need a touch of gentleness.  For those seeking deeper understanding, we invite you to join us on a journey of reclaiming health through the wisdom of your senses. Until we meet again, may you listen softly, taste slowly, and allow your senses to guide you home. 8. Energy Depletion: When Your Body Says Stop

    23 JAN

Energy Depletion: When Your Body Says Stop

Energy is a fundamental part of our well-being that often goes overlooked until it feels depleted. But when our bodies whisper for rest amidst the clatter of daily life, it's time to listen and restore what has quietly slipped away. In this episode, we'll look at society's widespread exhaustion epidemic, including: Safeguarding your energy Prioritising rituals Creating sustainable rhythms, including nourishing food, time spent in nature and more… Symptoms, Stress, and All-Encompassing fatigue Most people who come to see me in the clinic endure a draining cycle of chronic symptoms and stress. It's more than physical unease they're experiencing; it's an all-encompassing fatigue affecting their minds and spirits.  Despite their efforts, it's like chasing a moving finish line. It's a fatigue that reaches deep within, not just in the muscles, but in the heart and mind. At its essence, energy is our life force, encompassing our physical, emotional, mental, and spiritual capacity to face the world.  On a cellular level, ATP produced by our mitochondria is the energy currency, sustaining every movement and thought. But energy transcends biology; it's the inner flame that fuels our passion and joy, enabling robust connections and responses to life's challenges. Ancient Wisdom Ancient healing systems had it right. In Traditional Chinese Medicine, this life force is recognised as qi. When qi is obstructed or depleted, illness creeps in; hence, restoring it through acupuncture, nourishing foods, and mindful practices like Qi Gong is vital.  Meanwhile, in Ayurveda, energy or 'prana' is the breath of life itself. When prana dwindles, it manifests as fatigue or anxiety, calling for gentle remedies like yoga and meditation. Overwhelming Stimulus Today, our culture faces a widespread exhaustion epidemic. This depletion roots not from physical toil but from overwhelming stimulus, relentless productivity, and digital fatigue.  Neuroscientists, through the Polyvagal Theory, illustrate how ongoing stress can shift our nervous system into a conservation mode. This isn't genuine rest; it's a natural withdrawal, a mechanism to survive enduring stress, and a clear signal that something deeper needs addressing. Nutrition's Role in Energy Nutritional deficiencies are a common yet overlooked cause of energy loss. Beyond known factors like iron and B12, minerals such as iodine and zinc play critical roles in metabolism and cellular repair. When these are lacking, vitality wanes.  Further compounding this is poor digestion, lingering post-viral fatigue, and disrupted sleep patterns—all acting as energy drains. Managing Your Energy In managing our energy, it's crucial to first plug these losses with curiosity, and not judgment. Yet, the deeper endeavour lies in safeguarding our energy. Listen closely: when you're tired, rest. Respect your natural rhythms; these are not signs of weakness, but rather essential signals to restore and repair. Rest is not idleness; it is life's natural way of renewal. Our culture often glamorises constant hustle, but rest is a profound act of self-care and preservation. It's how the body heals, how the mind relaxes, and the soul reconnects. Although stillness can be initially unsettling, confronting what we've evaded, it is through rest that true healing unfurls. Protecting energy involves knowing when to pause, when to say no, and prioritising rituals that nourish us, such as grounding foods, nature walks, and conscious breathing.  Creating Sustainable Rhythms Your energy is sacred and worthy of protection. If weariness is creeping in, remember that fatigue is your body's way of signalling the need to pause and realign.  Begin by creating simple, sustainable rhythms: eat with intention, sleep deeply, breathe with awareness, and invite stillness into your life. Healing commences not by forcing energy back but by aligning and allowing life to flow through you naturally.  As you mend yourself bit by bit, we restore our inner harmony and reconstruct a life where vitality is preserved, presence is full, and our energy is respected.  Connect with Me Visit my naturopathic clinic at apothecabyanthia.com  Join the Staying Healthy Together Club for a deeper exploration of these practices  Highlights 00:40 Introduction to Healing and Energy 01:04 Understanding Energy Depletion 02:51 Traditional Healing Systems 04:20 Modern Causes of Fatigue 06:08 Nutritional and Physical Factors 08:59 The Importance of Rest 10:39 Final Thoughts and Encouragement
