EP21: Refugees, remittance and the potential for ideological change with Pennsylvania State University's Professor Joseph Wright

EP21: Refugees, remittance and the potential for ideological change with Pennsylvania State University's Professor Joseph Wright

Refugees and migrants take their path for many different reasons one of which is economic. How does the money they send back to their homes - remittance - change their families, communities and even governments? Outside of this how does their new cultural capital impact how they see the world around them and from where they travelled from?

Pennsylvania State University's Joseph Wright, along with Abel Escribà-Folch and Covadonga Meseguer have written Migration and Democracy: How Remittances Undermine Dictatorships - available in the US right now and the UK early 2022 - to look at these questions and more.

Peter and Joseph spoke over Zoom for this episode of I've Been Thinking.

Brilliantly eclectic and thoughtful

This is an amazing podcast with subjects debated in a calm and considered way. Conclusions are inferred based on the evidence and this makes me pine for the days when the press was less polarised. I love this and urge you to spread the word.

Topical, thought-provoking chats

Peter Frankopan's interviewees are a wide-ranging bunch and I've only listened to 3 of his chats so far. From Alice Roberts describing Britain's (very) ancient history, to James Comey's recollections at the centre of the Trump storm to a historian's view on what it takes to be a UK PM, this podcast appears to have plenty to offer for those interested in understanding more about some of the most fascinating topics of our time. Who knew there was a Copper Age before the Bronze Age? What can paleogenetics (have I got that right?) tell us about recent archeological finds? How did Trump manage to get so many of the great and good to compromise their own moral values to work for him? Why do some PMs leave their mark on history and some sink without trace? These are just a flavour of the topics covered in episodes 1-3 and I'm looking forward to today's commute to hear more. I suspect that those who are already experts in the fields of discussion won't learn a great deal but for the rest of us, these podcasts might just open a door to something previously unknown or unconsidered. And if, like me, you use these podcasts for exactly that reason, then there's always the option of adding to the 'to-read' list once the appetite is suitably whetted. And you might even be tempted to pull 'The Silk Roads' down from the shelf for a re-read...
