    My guest on JobsWorth this week is Leanne Reardon, founder of Flow State Office. Leanne is on a mission to help business founders find their state of flow - but unlike so many people peddling a similar message, she’s honest about the fact she’s still searching for hers. Secondary school left her directionless and demotivated (something many of you might relate to), yet a stroke of serendipity during work experience led her to discover a role filled with meaning and purpose. Unfortunately, restructures and redundancy forced her to recalibrate what work would look like going forward. We talk about grief and the trauma that period still carries for her. Leanne’s second act began after a life-changing retreat that led to her first role outside local authority work - and acted as the catalyst for the path she’s on today. Hers is a story of resilience, having the courage to try something new, and trusting your intuition.     On this week’s episode of JobsWorth, I’m speaking to artisan bike mechanic and founder of Essex-based Stow Velo, Keith James. Keith is a self-confessed bike geek, and despite me being very clearly out of my league when it came to discussing anything more technical than how many wheels they have, his passion for the craft and cycling culture was truly infectious. Since relocating to Leigh-on-Sea with his family, Keith has been on a mission to nurture and support the growth of the cycling community- and if he can get me seriously contemplating sliding into some Lycra, it’s only a matter of time before we’re all joining his monthly social rides. Keith is a creative at heart, and if the dots between that and “bike mechanic” don’t immediately connect for you, just wait until you hear about the many strings to his bow. We find out where his obsession with bikes came from, how his love for cycling led him to work in product and apparel design for some of the industry’s biggest brands, and I ask whether all bike messengers working in London are a little bit mad. (The answer won’t surprise you.) We also discuss the reality of picking up your young business, leaving your original customer base behind, and starting again somewhere new.     On JobsWorth this week, I sit down with London-based freelance photographer, Henry Knock. Henry is one of a small handful of people who have managed to turn their passion into a career. I’ve been guilty in the past of labelling this exclusive group as ‘lucky’- yet we often forget that there’s an untold story of how they got there in the first place. I’ve learned to replace ‘lucky’ with brave, courageous, tenacious, and a whole host of other words that don’t leave you feeling as if these opportunities just fell into their lap. In Henry’s case, there was a time when he was confident he’d already landed his dream job. Yet, despite his love for the industry he was working in, he regularly felt overwhelmed, anxious and, in his own words, like he was ‘drowning’. For a lot of our followers, that might just resonate. His career transformation started just as Instagram was in its infancy. For someone who now has over a decade of experience working with global sports, fashion and lifestyle brands, Henry’s first foray into photography all began on his iPhone. We explore Henry’s experience of education and why he so often felt anything but inspired; what it was like growing up with two ultra-creative parents (and being predicted an F in GCSE Art); and his earlier jobs in hospitality and events. We also talk about the realities of life as a freelancer, how you know it’s the right time to turn a side hustle into a full-time job, the resilience you need to deal with time between projects, and why there’s truth behind the proverb ‘never work with children and animals’.     My guest on JobsWorth this week is James (Jimbo) Wall, owner of Leigh-on-Sea-based coffee shop/wine shop/deli… shop (that doesn’t sound quite right, but I’m rolling with it)- North. Jimbo has been working in hospitality for over 24 years. It’s an industry that was once viewed by many as a stopgap- somewhere to bring in a bit of money while you figured out what you really wanted to do with your life. I ask Jimbo how he thinks that perception has evolved over the years, and why, in his case, it meant so much more. From waiting tables at Pizza Hut to managing bars in some of the best spots in Leeds and London, Jimbo’s story is one of hard graft, grit, and determination. We find out what brought him south in the first place, the events that led him to call Leigh-on-Sea home, and how an idea that took root early in his career became an old watch shop in need of a whole lot of TLC. ‘Not another f**king coffee shop’ It’s a phrase Jimbo heard often from passersby as he was getting ready to open. How did he deal with it? Well, the answer might surprise you. Like so many independent shops in this little corner of Essex, North has its own character- an identity that, in no small part, has been created, curated, and breathed into life by Jimbo and, by extension, the community he’s built around the brand. North will soon be celebrating its second birthday and with Jimbo at the helm, I’ve no doubt it’ll have many more.     This week on JobsWorth I’m sitting down with Richard Cooper, Founder and Managing Director of Essex based marketing agency, The OnCrowd.  When Rich landed his first job in the early noughties, marketing looked very different to what it is today. He’s seen a whole heap of changes over the last two decades and as his own business celebrates its thirteenth anniversary the pace of change is only getting faster.  In this episode I ask Rich what it was about marketing that lured him in in the first place, why after seven years of working in industry he decided to jump over the other side of the fence and work for a creative agency and we discuss the events that led him to starting The OnCrowd in the first place. Just five years into running his business Rich became a Dad. We talk about the transition to fatherhood and the impact it had on worklife balance, boundaries and his definition of success.  Rich’s wanderlust has taken him all over the world but we explore why he chose to set up shop in Leigh on Sea and what it is that makes the local community so special.  It’s this sense of community that has become the catalyst for a very special project Rich and his team have been working on and fortunately for us he was very happy to tell all.  Please enjoy...     JobsWorth is back and on this week’s episode I’m joined by Andy Gooch and Kirsty Williamson of Essex based creative agency, Ultra Studio. Like so many businesses, Ultra was born out of necessity. A way for Andy to work on one of his first major projects out of university. Little did he know that thirteen years down the line it would have grown into what it is today. Andy, by his own admission, benefited from having a clear idea of what he wanted to be when he grew up from a relatively young age. Kirsty’s ‘journey’ (a word neither are comfortable with by the way) was a little more…squiggly. And it’s one that a lot of you will be able to relate to. We talk about university, and whether it’s an essential step to kick start a career in a creative field. We explore how Kirsty and Andy define success and how that’s evolved over the years. We also discuss the impact of becoming parents on their never ending battle for work life balance. The pair have now worked together for over seven years and in 2024 they decided to add another string to the Ultra Studio bow in the form of their skate inspired clothing brand, Super Ultra Cool. I ask them what it is about certain types of people that forces them to find more work for themselves and whether they’ve worked out what ‘enough’ looks like for them. Please enjoy...
