Last Drinks with a Breast Cancer Survivor

Last Drinks with a Breast Cancer Survivor

Kath Elliot is a breast cancer survivor.
Kath navigated cancer, chemo and change without alcohol. Kath used to drink like most people, all through her early twenties and thirties, a grey area drinker, where nothing crazy happened. Yet she eventually tired of the hangovers and lost memories of the night before and decided to go sober. It was a few weeks later she would receive the news of a harrowing breast cancer diagnosis and her whole world would spin on a different axis.
Maz and Kath talk about the links between drinking and increased cancer risk and have a very raw conversation about the lack of education of these inherent and problematic health risks alcohol consumption can cause. Kath, in remission and healthier than ever, attributes her sobriety to the discovery that more needs to be done to educate women of the impacts alcohol can have on their health and cancer risk.

    Last Drinks with Casey Davidson

    Last Drinks with Casey Davidson

After 20 years of climbing the corporate ladder at big companies and small startups, Casey Davidson wasn’t in love with the life she was living.
Her life looked pretty good from the outside, but didn’t feel as good on the inside. She had too many commitments and not enough hours in the day.
She was constantly going, yet filled with an anxious energy she could never quite release so she would hurry home after work, feeling desperate to relax, and immediately open a bottle of wine.
She'd drink the bottle, and sometimes more, while cooking dinner, helping with homework, doing the dishes, and watching TV.
And then would wake up at 3 am with her my mind racing and her heart pounding, feeling like complete shit. She'd worry about how to handle the business trip next week, get to day care pick up on time, manage everything in-between and how she'd get through the morning with a headache and a hangover.
    It was exhausting

    Something needed to change.
Hear how Casey stopped drinking, and created a new and beautiful life.

    Last Drinks with Tom Gozney

    Last Drinks with Tom Gozney

Tom Gozney has built a huge international cult following of well-recognised chefs, but Tom's story didn't start as a promising pizza oven pioneer. As a child, he struggled with severe dyslexia and was highly misunderstood—resulting in expulsion from school and being kicked out of college. Told he wouldn’t amount to anything, Tom turned to drugs and alcohol and soon became addicted. At 20, he entered a rehabilitation program in South Africa and emerged a year later unsure of his path forward. This is where we start our conversation, Tom's Last Drink.
Without drugs and alcohol to lean on, Tom struggled with social gatherings. He didn’t find comfort until he decided to build a homemade brick oven in his backyard where he discovered his love for cooking. Upon doing so, he realized that pizza was his way to re-engage with friends and family, who would bring over pizza toppings (rather than drugs and alcohol) and enjoy an evening in the community—uniting in the healing power of good food and great company. This inspired Gozney to create his first oven business, The Stone Bake Oven Company (2010), with the goal of making wood-fired cooking accessible to commercial businesses, and later residential properties with the establishment of the Gozney brand.

Amazing chats

So many great chats! I have now successfully binged every episode instead of binging on alcohol! So real, relatable and authentic. Thankyou!

Life changing!

Maz, your episode about reframing your relationship with alcohol made me cry happy tears of relief in my car. I’d been doing a lot of work around reframing my own relationship with alcohol and this was my (as you put it) come to Jesus moment.

You’re making such a difference, words cannot describe how grateful I am that I found this pod.

So informative

I really love learning about sobriety. Thanks for all the wisdom. Your intro and song should be more calming, I feel like it stresses me out when I hear it, it’s too alarming!
Those of us that are struggling with addition need calm and positive energy. Just my thoughts
