Boy’s and Men’s Mental Health – Breaking down the Barriers

Did you know - that men are at greatest risk of suicide but, are less likely to ask for help. According to the Black Dog Institute, an estimated 72% of men will not seek help for a mental health disorder. So why are our brothers, dads, sons, uncles, nephews, mates suffering in silence from mental health conditions and not feeling able to seek help from others when they need it the most? Today on MediTalk I speak with Jon Marginis who is a Counselling Psychology Registrar practicing privately at Clear Health Psychology and is a Psychologist at Scotch College in Perth. Jon is a great advocate of Boy’s and Men’s Mental Health and works alongside them through challenging times in their life. Jon has done a lot of work with children and teenagers but, also has a keen interest in working with adults. He also prides himself on working with boys and males and enjoys breaking down the societal barriers around negative stereotypes associated with males engaging in therapy. Due to his tireless efforts in increasing the profile of male mental health on a local and global level he was nominated for a national Australian Mens Health Forum award. A big thank you to Jon for sharing his knowledge with us all and continuing to advocate for such an important mental health cause. We appreciate him taking the time to be interviewed.
