Ep. 594 - John Wilson - Royal Philharmonic Society Award winning conductor of film and orchestral music

John Wilson is one of Britain’s foremost conductors, dubbed “the most exciting British conductor since Simon Rattle” by The Sunday Times, he has devoted more than 30 years to painstakingly restoring and recreating the original orchestrations of MGM’s greatest musicals after the studio’s entire music library was destroyed in 1969. His reconstructions of scores for films including The Wizard of Oz, Singin’ in the Rain and An American in Paris have brought these classics back to the concert hall exactly as they were heard on screen. Founder of the internationally acclaimed John Wilson Orchestra and Music Director of Sinfonia of London, he has conducted many of the world’s leading orchestras, including the London Symphony Orchestra, the Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra and the Chicago Symphony Orchestra. A regular at the BBC Proms and the recipient of a prestigious Royal Philharmonic Society Award, his recordings and performances have earned widespread acclaim, establishing him as one of today’s leading interpreters of both classic film music and the great orchestral repertoire. John Wilson is our guest in episode 594 of My Time Capsule and he chats to Michael Fenton Stevens about the five things he’d like to put in a time capsule; four he’d like to preserve and one he’d like to bury and never have to think about again .
