#029 Andy: Inflation. Spend Less? Spend More? Stop?

Central banks are sent to battle inflation, equipped only with "nuclear-interest-rate-bombs". How might the federal government take a more nuanced approach? Should it stop spending, spend less, spend more?Maybe it should take note of the three-Cs of managing inflation -- causality, capacity, & creativity -- as heard only on RadioMMT, in this conversation with Andy the data analyst. Shownotes"MMT in a post-COVID world", ANZ On Air, July 2021 Fadel Kaboub, MMT economist Andy's graph takes the wind out of the mainstream argument that government deficit spending always triggers inflation. Theme MusicPleading Ignorance, by Ed Kuepper, from the album Starstruck. Additional AudioToo Many Things, by Ed Kuepper, from the album Starstruck.

#028 Andy: Battling the Inflation Bogeyman

We are experiencing levels of inflation unlike any we have seen for decades. What exactly is going on here? And what is this battle over the narrative around inflation? With the help of Andy, a data analyst with a few magical measurements up his sleeve, we will spend the next two episodes wrangling the inflation bogeyman. There is a lot at stake. Keeping everyone scared of the bogeyman is useful if you are a greedy neoliberal who wants to prevent the rest of us from accessing the treasure of the Treasury. Show NotesWhat the RBA says about inflation Theme MusicPleading Ignorance, by Ed Kuepper, from the album Starstruck. Additional Audio Tech Giants, Generational Divides & Gaza Aid, Q+A, ABC, 11 March 2024 Too Many Things, by Ed Kuepper, from the album Starstruck. Sound effectsLicence: The song is permitted for non-commercial use under license ìAttribution-NonCommercial 4.0 International (CC BY-NC 4.0) Kelli's Number by U.S. Army Blues is licensed under a Public Domain Mark 1.0 License.

#026 Maren Poitras: Hidden Knowledge That Will Drive You Insane

Maren Poitras picks up her 'prosumer' camera, and walks into a battlefield. There she finds an underdog group of economists holding out against a storm of criticism. Why the attack? They asked the taboo question. The question which will either ostracise you, or drive you crazy! This is the question that Maren pursues in her film, Finding the Money. Her film follows this plucky group of economists, hunkered down for the long haul, and determined the world should know the answer to that fateful question, "where does money come from?"Theme MusicPleading Ignorance, by Ed Kuepper, from the album Starstruck. Additional AudioToo Many Things, by Ed Kuepper, from the album Starstruck. Finding The Money (teaser) L.U.X, by Phil & The Tiles, from Double Happiness Real Estate Mastermind, by Phil & The Tiles, from Double Happiness

While Kev is away, Anne is joined by fellow MMT-traveller, Jackson. We discuss a conversation Anne & Kev had with Maren Poitras, director of a film called "Finding the Money", the perfect antidote to "debt hysteria". Finding the Money, follows the trials and tribulations of MMT economists, notably Stephanie Kelton. Maren and Stephanie will be touring Australia with the film during February and March 2024.Support RadioMMT with your annual subscription to 3CR Radio.Subscribe online here. Finding The Money, film tourtickets here ShownotesMaren mentions women economists who are having a positive impact:Stephanie Kelton, a professor of economics and public policy at Stony Brook University, and a leading proponent of Modern Monetary Theory, which she popularised in her book, The Deficit Myth. She served as a senior economic advisor to Bernie Sanders's 2016 and 2020 presidential campaigns, and served as chief economist on the U.S. Senate Budget Committee (Democratic staff) in 2015. She is founder of the blog New Economic PerspectivesMariana Mazzucato, a professor in the Economics of Innovation and Public Value at University College London (UCL). She is best known for her work on the dynamics of technological change, and the role of the public sector in innovation. She has been active in advising governments on innovation and growth policies. She is the author of, Mission Economy: A Moonshot Guide to Changing Capitalism.Kate Raworth, a senior associate at Oxford University’s Environmental Change Institute and a Professor of Practice at Amsterdam University of Applied Sciences. She is known for her ecological economics framework, or "doughnut economics", an economic model that identifies the sweet spot between essential human needs and planetary boundaries.Isabella Weber, a German economist, and assistant professor of economics at the University of Massachusetts Amherst. According to Wikipedia, in December 2021, an op-ed she published in The Guardian which argued that strategic price controls could help control inflation in bottleneck situations was heavily criticized by economists, making her "the most hated woman in economics" (The New Yorker). Paul Krugman called her "truly stupid", a statement for which he later apologized.Jackson mentions Claudia Sahm, an American economist, leading the Macroeconomic Research initiative of the Jain Family Institute. Sahm specializes in macroeconomics and household finance.
