In this episode, Dr. Dani Cabral sits down with Dr. Esra Shermadou, MD, a board-certified Family Medicine and Obesity Medicine physician and founder of Sakinah Health, a direct patient care clinic in Dayton, Ohio. In this thoughtful conversation, Dr. Shermadou shares how her own health journey shaped her perspective on medicine and wellness. What began as a path to recovery eventually sparked her passion for strength training and long-term health. They explore why muscle health is one of the most important and often overlooked pillars of longevity. They discuss how strength training supports metabolic health, helps prevent insulin resistance, promotes brain health through the release of beneficial myokines and BDNF, and builds the physiological reserve our bodies need to recover from illness or injury as we age. They also talk about how the direct patient care model allows physicians to slow down, listen more closely, and create personalized care plans that truly support patients’ long-term health goals. If you’ve ever wondered how to live not just longer, but stronger, this episode offers powerful insights on muscle, longevity, and the importance of whole-person care. From 1970s Hippie Singer to Hospice Pioneer: How music opens pathways of emotion and connection until our final moments | Dr. Maribeth Gallagher

What happens when a life rooted in music evolves into a life devoted to caring for people at the very end of theirs? In this deeply moving conversation, Dr. Dani Cabral talks with Dr. Maribeth Gallagher—psychiatric nurse practitioner, hospice leader, and former professional singer who came of age in the vibrant 1970s San Francisco music scene. Her journey from stage to bedside reveals something profound: music is not just entertainment. It is a pathway into connection, identity, and humanity, even in the final moments of life. Drawing from decades of experience in hospice and dementia care, Dr. Gallagher shares how music can reach people when words no longer can, awakening presence, evoking memory, and creating moments of joy and recognition in even the most advanced stages of illness. This episode is about more than music. It’s about what remains when so much is lost, how we connect beyond language, and what people at the end of life teach us about how to live.
