We're all investors in the share market, either directly or through our superannuation. We're handing over management of our assets to financial advisors and fund managers. The best will look after our interests and make us wealthier. But how can we know for sure? Where do you go if you're completely new but want to start learning about investing in the markets yourself. The jargon is dense and it can feel like we're being kept deliberately in the dark. You'll hear from people in the finance industry and together we'll explain the key concepts of investing in the ASX, the NASDAQ, S&P500, FTSE, Dow. More importantly, they have insights that allow us to look under the hood of the stock market, explaining how it works and what to look out for. We have to be smart. We have to be diversified and we have to have good risk management strategies if we want to invest for the long term.

QUICK TIP - Ways to invest and things to avoid | From my first ever episode
The first episode of this podcast was released in February 2019, and my first guest was a financial advisor named Rob Gilmour. I couldn’t have asked for a finer first guest. He’s highly experienced in advice as well as having a background in markets in Australia and London. This Quick tip is taken from that first episode and it kind of shows where my head was at the time. I was still thinking of the share market as a place to get rich quick and hadn’t learnt about the long-term compounding nature of the game. It’s my main goal with the podcast, to make sure that listeners don’t make the same stupid mistakes that I made. Here’s a little segment about ways that you can invest and the ones to be very, very careful of.

Elio D'Amato - Stockopedia | Am I ready to invest?
Broadcasting live from his humble garage next to his trusty Toyota Corolla (and a clothes rack), Elio D'Amato from Stockopedia joined me to discuss share investing and the factors that identify quality companies. It's always great to catch up with Elio. His bluff good humour combined with his decades of experience always make for a great chat about companies and markets. We addressed the concerns of people approaching investment markets for the first time: Is now a good time to be in the market? Elio believes that it's not about timing, it's about the readiness of the investor. Just like merging into traffic, it's not about waiting for the ideal conditions, but rather assessing your own preparedness to navigate the market's ups and downs.

QUICK TIP - Analysts gazing longingly into the future. Sometimes it's right to be wrong.
I was interviewing Andrew Page of Strawman on the 24th April this year. It was on the day that Bluescope Steel announced a significant earnings upgrade. I used this opportunity to find out Andrew’s thoughts on what it meant, why he doesn’t invest in companies that are exposed to commodities, and more importantly, the immediate affect on the share price.

QUICK TIP Mathew Hodge - Morningstar | Where YouTube and Podcasts Meet the ASX
What are the common ratios you should learn before building a portfolio? I know I go on about metrics and rations, but they’re important to understand. It’s what expert investors use to run the tape measure over companies. Mathew Hodge is a director of equity research for Morningstar Australasia. In this Quick Tip he talks about return on invested capital. He explains how this ratio can show how much return a company generates for every dollar of capital invested. Measuring return on invested capital eliminates the bias of return on equity, which can be distorted by financial leverage or the amount that the company has borrowed.
Above all, Mathew says to invest in yourself, expand your circles of competence, and keep upgrading your mental software.

Gary Brode - Deep Knowledge Investing | SVB Overdrawn and underfunded
Silicon Valley Bankcorp failed spectacularly in March 2023. The bank, the regulators and the media formed a circle of finger-pointing and blame. Understanding duration risk is a fundamental concept in finance, and the bank should have been aware of the porblem. The Federal Reserve warned Silicon Valley Bankcorp last year, expressing their concern. Warnings were ignored, and the results were catastrophic.
