SUPERLATIVE: BEING A MODERN WATCHMAKER WITH EMMA RUTTEN - GRONEFELD WATCHES

This is Superlative: A Podcast about watches, the people behind them, and the worlds that inspire them. This week our host Ariel Adams is joined by his friend and Watchmaker at, Emma Rutten. They start the show talking about her working for a small independent watch company in The Netherlands, Gronefeld Watches. They talk about the different roles that technicians and watchmakers may do at different companies such as restoration and some of the small details about repairing and replacement in more expensive pieces. Ariel and Emma talk about some of the details that go into watch making and the man hours behind different practices they do, such as building full movements or putting together a complicated piece. They end the show talking about restoration, and how learning how to reverse engineer watches and their parts can fuel someones interests towards going into restoration. Ariel asks Emma to try and explain the intellectual process of trying to make any given part for a watch, (not a loaded question at all), and what the emotions and feelings are that come with bringing a piece back to life that wasn’t working, or building a piece from scratch, and how that feels as a watchmaker.

SUPERLATIVE: DESIGNING AND CRITIQUING WATCH DESIGNS WITH MATT SMITH-JOHNSON - ART DIRECTOR FOR ABTW.COM

This is Superlative: A Podcast about watches, the people behind them, and the worlds that inspire them. This week our host Ariel Adams is joined by the Art Director of aBlogtoWatch.com, and Founder/Creative Director at Sentient Creative, Matt Smith-Johnson. They two talk about what its like meeting other watch enthusiasts and how it usually means you have a few others things in common, how learning about watching isn't the easiest thing, and they make some car and Heavy Metal music comparisons with watches and watch eras specifically. Ariel and Matt talk about how important the appearance of a watch truly is because of the visual experience you have when you look at a watch and how you need to have that immediate response to seeing a watch to make it special to you. Ariel mentions how Matt was responsible for multiple iterations of the ABTW website design plus much more, and asks where he personally goes for inspiration. Matt talks about how perception plays a huge part in design and making a person who is experiencing your art feel a certain way or portal a certain message to them. To end the show, they talk about the Dietrich Time Companion that had a dial designed by Matt, the Laco RAD-AUX Limited Edition piece that is made for the Fallout gaming universe, and how fun and unique the design experience for that piece was for them and everybody involved.

SUPERLATIVE: WATCHES & WONDERS 2021 WITH DANIEL SUM - SHANGHAI WATCH GANG

This is Superlative: A Podcast about watches, the people behind them, and the worlds that inspire them. This week our host Ariel Adams is joined by our first return guest of the show, Daniel Sum of Shanghai Watch Gang, just days after he visited Watches & Wonders 2021. They start the show by talking about being around other collectors in person, what you can see about them when talking about watches face to face, and the differences in what it means to be a collector and a hobbyist. When talking about Watches & Wonders 2021, Daniel elaborates about the different registration process, what it was like handling watches in person at the event, and the availability of certain pieces. Ariel mentions his "mission" for brands to make prototypes, which Daniel supports, and they dive into several pieces that were shown at the event, including the massive amount of Green that was there, and some of the brands Daniel didn’t go see. Ariel asks Daniel what the Shanghai market will be like over the next year, how the Chinese market is different than others, and how brands are responding to the market since the pandemic.

This is Superlative: A Podcast about watches, the people behind them, and the worlds that inspire them. This week our host Ariel Adams is joined by Luxury enthusiast and Former European Luxury goods correspondent at Reuters, Astrid Wendlandt, the founder of media and publishing house Miss Tweed. They start the show talking about how Astrid got into covering luxury from the corporate angle, what luxury conglomerates are in the industry and how common they are for most major brands to be a part of, and how it may have withheld certain brands. They touch on subjects like what innovation means to luxury brands today when they proclaim "we innovate", and the possible irony in the fact that luxury brands are publicly traded, and what would be the incentive to an investor to invest in a modern luxury brand. Astrid explains why she is currently is in Val d’Isère in the French Alps, organizing an event that is invitation only (in a way) and how this event changes things up a bit, and the goal of a summit like this. They talk about dealing with feedback and criticism from those they are reporting on, how they maintain those professional relationships, and Astrid gives us her outlook on what luxury brands may be up to in the year after the pandemic.

SUPERLATIVE: “BUY WHAT YOU LIKE, WEAR WHAT YOU BUY” WITH ADAM CRANIOTES - CO-FOUNDER OF THE REDBAR GROUP

This is Superlative: A Podcast about watches, the people behind them, and the worlds that inspire them. This week our host Ariel Adams is joined by his friend and long time enthusiast, Adam Craniotes, Co-Founder of The RedBar Group. They start the show talking about the role that socializing plays in watch collecting and what the last year has been like for the watch community with socializing not being as accessible with events and groups. Adam explains how RedBar was started (by accident really), the two simple "rules" they have, and how long until it also became a business. Adam and Ariel talk about watch forums of the 90's and Adam explains what it was like being a moderator on Timezone, his roles on the forum, and why brands need community moderators online so people can connect with another human when they are seeking information on a brand, or just seeking community with other watch lovers. They touch on aspects of collecting such as if the investor mentality has started to slowly invade the collector mentality in the industry and how it has affected certain collectors, events, and the prices of re-selling certain luxury time pieces. To end the show Ariel and Adam discuss an important question, how are we, as an industry, going to make events going forward better than the past after what we have experienced over the past year?

SUPERLATIVE: A SWISS PERSPECTIVE ON MODERN WATCHMAKING WITH THOMAS BAILLOD - FOUNDER & CEO BA111OD WATCHES

SUPERLATIVE: A SWISS PERSPECTIVE ON MODERN WATCHMAKING WITH THOMAS BAILLOD - FOUNDER & CEO BA111OD WATCHES

This is Superlative: A Podcast about watches, the people behind them, and the worlds that inspire them. This week our host Ariel Adams is joined by his long time friend, Thomas Baillod of BA111OD. Ariel describes Thomas as being a true teacher and activist in the watch industry and Thomas elaborates on his idea that you need to do more than just speak words when you talk about activism and change, and that he is about "making words concrete" with his actions and what he is able to actually do and create with his concepts and vision. They talk about the resistance Thomas felt in his early days in the industry, how Swiss culture from the past is still influencing the sales and marketing strategies used today, and the concept Thomas worked out to upgrade "Swiss Made' that would highlight the origin of it and bring more value to the term. As they talk about deep nuances of the watch industry, they begin to talk about what the internet can do about certain core issues in the industry right now like lower overall demand as opposed to in the past, and how "Omni Channel" sales worked before in retail and wholesale, but how it doesn't translate to internet sales. Ariel and Thomas also talk about the genesis of the BA111OD Brand and how the term “Screw It” was a big part of Thomas finally shooting to create his concept around the idea that you buy watches from your friends and those you trust, and how he isn’t just building a new way to purchase a product, but he’s helping rethinking the way we should be selling watches.

Trittox ,

Potentially interesting podcast, ruined by poor interview technique.

Some of the guests here are great, but Ariel is not a great interviewer. He keeps interrupting and talking over his guests.
