Updating the below from a few years ago with the move to Yahoo: still excellent, though a few years later it’s clear that a lot of podcasting is about chemistry, and the married vibes make it a little more difficult to listen to, particularly - hate to say it - Steve is just leaning too hard into the annoyance with Nekias’ angles in advance, which stops him from getting into the zone that we came to the podcast for which is his unique insight as a coach and analyst. Don’t become an old man too early Steve! It comes at all of us fast. Still an unrivalled podcast for knowing what’s going on in the NBA and the awesome W.

I think I came on board with this podcast around episode 5, and it was an immediate feeing of relief. From this distance, U.S. sports are weird to love as you have predominantly Black athletes and a predominantly white apparatus of owners, managers and commentariat that often leads the discourse into weird situations, especially when many white commentators understandably align themselves with the thinking of management and have little insight into the life of the players. So there is a lot of virtual GMing that seems to lead us away from what happens on the court.
With Nékias and Steve, we have no shortage of analytical expertise (old man Steve on the film and locker room; young Nekias with the “Nekialytics” and writing practice) but they just do not get caught up in the wannabe CEO nonsense and keep it pretty close to the court while also having their various amusing set pieces that don’t get old. Throw into the mix some occasional well selected guests and you have the best podcast.
That would be more than enough, but they’ve also leaned into the WNBA and brought me along with them, I’d been a casual viewer on occasion but now am enjoying this year’s playoffs as much as the NBA and I have them to thank for that.
Now all we need is a Patreon supported ad free version.
