In this episode of The Executive Espresso Podcast, Verge Das Neves sits down with Vikrant Mulgund, Managing Director at Alvarez & Marsal, for a conversation about mentorship, executive leadership, career growth, management consulting and the relationships that shape successful careers. Vikrant arrived in Australia as a young engineer with a clear career plan. More than twenty years later, his career has taken him from engineering and major capital projects into management consulting, executive leadership and boardroom advisory. Today, he is a Managing Director with Alvarez & Marsal’s Performance Improvement practice in Australia and New Zealand, bringing more than two decades of experience across major projects, business improvement and strategic advisory. But this episode is really about mentorship. Vikrant explains why some formal mentoring programs fail, why the most senior executive may not be the best mentor for you, and why great mentors often ask more questions than they answer. He shares how mentors helped him adapt to corporate Australia, make major career decisions, take risks and build confidence. He also explains why he still actively seeks mentors despite being a senior executive himself. The conversation explores reverse mentoring, learning from younger professionals, preparing for board roles, navigating complex decisions and the importance of keeping your ego out of the learning process. Vikrant also shares what he has observed inside boardrooms where major investment decisions are made, including how leaders navigate uncertainty, disagreement, accountability, influence and judgement. And as AI continues to change the way we work, Vikrant believes human connection may become even more important. In this episode: - How to find a mentor - What makes a great mentor - Why mentorship should develop naturally - How to approach senior executives for career advice - Why peers can make excellent mentors - How to become a better mentee - Why senior leaders still need mentors - Reverse mentoring and learning from younger generations - Career growth in corporate Australia - Leadership judgement and decision making - Moving from engineering into management consulting - Preparing for board and director roles - The role of human connection in an AI driven workplace If you are an executive, emerging leader, manager or professional thinking about your next career move, this conversation offers a practical perspective on mentorship, leadership and long term career development. He reached the top, and then realised what it had cost him

He spent years advising boards on major decisions. Then he became the person who had to make them, and live with what happened next. Mike Ferraro built his career across law, investment banking and corporate leadership before becoming Chief Executive Officer of Alumina Limited, where he led the company through major strategic change and ultimately its sale to Alcoa. Today, he sits on boards including Australian Red Cross Lifeblood, Citywide Service Solutions and Firmus Technologies. Mike Ferraro joins The Executive Espresso to talk about the difference between advising a decision and actually being accountable for it. This is not a conversation about having all the answers.Mike shares how growing up in a migrant family shaped his work ethic, why watching his parents being taken advantage of influenced his decision to study law, and how a career that began in professional services eventually took him into the CEO seat. He also reflects candidly on spending years travelling for work, being away for as much as six months a year, and why he now describes that period as one of the biggest regrets of his career. In this episode, Mike explains: ◼ How growing up as the son of Italian migrants shaped his ambition and attitude towards work ◼ Why seeing his parents being taken advantage of helped influence his decision to study law ◼ Why working extremely long hours helped accelerate his early career, and what he now believes people can lose by doing it for too long ◼ How experience across law and investment banking developed the commercial judgement he later relied on as a CEO ◼ Why Mike believes a CEO does not need to be the person who is right all the time ◼ How he approached building a leadership team without immediately replacing the people already there ◼ What it feels like to make a decision that is right for the organisation but still carries very real consequences for people ◼ Why he believes flexibility matters more than simply mandating where people work ◼ Why face to face interaction still matters for developing judgement, relationships and younger talent ◼ What years of constant corporate travel taught him about ambition, family and the hidden cost of success ◼ Why being away for six months a year eventually became one of the biggest regrets of his career ◼ Why he tells people considering long term commuting to think carefully about what it will do to their personal lives ◼ Why he sees AI and data centres as an opportunity for Australia to build new industries ◼ How leadership has changed from command and control towards a style that requires greater emotional awareness, engagement and trust FOLLOW MIKE FERRARO ◼ LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/mike-ferraro-980958105/ THE EXECUTIVE ESPRESSO PODCAST ◼ Subscribe on YouTube ◼ Listen on Spotify ◼ Listen on Apple Podcasts ◼ Follow on Instagram ◼ Follow on TikTok ◼ Sign up to the newsletter ◼ More leadership conversations ◼ Watch the full Season 2 playlist SPONSORS This episode is brought to you by: ◼ Espresso Displays The portable monitor built for executives who work on the road. ◼ Prosci Change Management The world's leading change management research and training company, and the sponsor behind our recurring segment, The People Side of Change ◼ Boyd & Moore Executive Search A leading executive search firm working across the Asia Pacific region.

What Bellroy Got Right That Most Startups Get Wrong

They started with nine ideas. Most were expected to fail. One became Bellroy. Sixteen years later, Bellroy has grown from selling seven wallets a day to building products recognised by customers around the world, working with companies including Apple and Qantas, and preparing to open its first Melbourne retail store. Lina Calabria, Co Founder and CEO of Bellroy, joins The Executive Espresso to talk about what happens when engineering, product design and patience come together This is not the usual founder story about explosive growth, raising huge amounts of capital or chasing the next big thing. It's a conversation about building slowly, staying profitable, knowing when to change your mind and creating products people genuinely want. In this episode, Lina explains: ◼ Why Bellroy started as one of nine different business ideas ◼ How customer response helped them decide which idea deserved their attention ◼ The campaign that took Bellroy from seven wallets a day to thirty wallets a day within a week ◼ Why product has to come before almost everything else in a business ◼ How engineering still influences everything from product straps to materials and phone cases This conversation is ultimately about something much bigger than wallets. It is about what happens when founders resist the pressure to rush, build around people with complementary skills and stay close enough to the customer to know when they have created something worth pursuing.
