Nostalgia and the future of RPGs

A relaxing and entertaining romp through the best and worst from the dawn of role playing through to the present. I heard about this podcast from the much missed Mike Hobbs who mentioned it on an episode of Meeples and Miniatures, and I’ve avidly listened ever since as it has grown from a few friends reminiscing into an international role playing phenomenon with a diverse online community and conventions each year.

And now I finally know what ‘bobbins’ means…

Dirk, Blythy and the rest, thanks for entertaining and informing!

The perfect mix of humour, nostalgia and charm

I stumbled across The Grognard Files quite by accident. I was immediately transported back to the early 80's and the long summer holidays playing RPG's with my mates.
Dirk and Blythy's experiences mirrored my own almost perfectly - same age, same games, same small group of friends with whom to share this obsessive hobby. Only our accents differ - swap Dirk’s mellifluous Northern tones for mine and my mate’s Estuary English and you have their southern cousins.
Listening to the Grognard Files has brought a lot of joy - remembering great times, great games and great adventures. It has rekindled my interest in the hobby and, powered by the internet, I am now playing again with my old-school mates from the far side of the world after a deep freeze of over 20 years.
I have found Dirk’s community to be a friendly virtual tavern of like-minded souls with Dirk pulling the pints and Blythy waxing lyrical as he studies the form guide and passes judgment on the business of the day.
For anyone who enjoyed RPG’s in the 70’s, 80’s or 90’s I thoroughly recommend this podcast. For anyone a more recent entrant to the hobby this podcast will explain what all the fuss is about.
Thank you Dirk and Blythy.

Like old friend’s telling you about their favourite games

A great look into older games and fascinating insights from older players on newer games. I found Blithey’s and Dirks’s insights into Numenera, quite refreshing, compared to most of the one paragraph reviews on reddit, for example.

I like the focused nature of this podcast; there are a minimum of banter and digressions into personal lives, which I prefer. I also like how it doesn’t have lots of jarring music and sound effects.

Dirk’s soothing voice is perfect for the podcast format, as is Judge Blithey’s and Ed’s. Don’t get me wrong, it is quite a humorous and entertaining podcast, but also relaxed and friendly.
