I started listening to this because I’d enjoyed Jocko’s main podcast - I really liked his style of reading aloud various history books and infusing tactical ground knowledge into the narrative, as well as the (non-cheesy) motivational and general life advice he provided (‘discipline equals freedom!’). I also knew Jocko was a big fan of the excellent Hardcore History podcast, and had heard him talk about the Martyrmade podcast but not got around to listening to it. So, when I saw this new joint pod, I assumed it would feature a quality historian in the mould of Dan Carlin talking us through history while Jocko provided some real-world context from his time in the field. Instead, the ‘historian’ tells history like a right-wing sophomoric know-nothing with a bad case of the Dunning-Kruger effect, constantly trying to weave his biased politics and values into the narrative. You’ll learn amazing truths such as liberals really only want to criticise world leaders about their treatment of gays, and that Ukrainians don’t deserve self-determination. Turns out might is right after all.
Jocko does add some useful context in his inimitable way, but for some reason appears impressed with the feeble-minded history being articulated by his co-host.
What’s more, when I jumped on the co-host’s Twitter page and criticised some of his absurd takes (in what I thought was a polite enough way), he instantly blocked me - talk about snowflakery! Looking at his infantile Twitter page and its constant devotion to Tucker Carlson I’d speculate this podcast and his Twitter feed is an attempt to court Tucker and the folks at Fox News for a future job.
