So Close
I really like these stories but every one of them always misses the opportunity to build on the scary twist when it’s revealed. I’m not sure if it’s the narrators lilting ‘bedtime story’ tone of voice or whether it just needs to extend the moment that you’re waiting for when listening. Always so close but not quite hitting the mark. I’ll keep listening though.
Fantastic
Fantastic
Exceptionally well-written, exceptional voice acting, great soundstage!!!
As the title says, this is an exceptional series. The voice acting and audio is very, very well done, with the length of the episodes meaning that you get caught up and feel something for the characters in the stories.
What I like most about this series however is that the stories don’t go for gore or shock, instead, the stories start with very detailed and emotive narratives that make you empathise and connect with the characters. Because you will connect with some stories more than others, I have been left feeling disappointment or happiness for these fictional characters after finishing some stories, and often wish that an entire podcast was written just for that character. Also, I like this series’ take on the supernatural - not too much, not over the top, just the write amount of spice to give each story an edge and a motivation.
In terms of the endings and the occasional twists, you can often see them coming, but unlike most stories, it’s the journey that really does count here, not the destination. I care more about being wrapped up by the relationships built, the lessons learnt, or a character getting over some past trauma, rather than an ending that explains what really happened and gives that Hollywood ending. Genuinely, this series makes you feel something about the stories and the characters, and with such great voice acting (from Brooke Jennette in particular), it’s hard not to be drawn in each episode.
I listen to a lot of horror/fantasy/sci-fi audio dramas and this one is certainly one of my top picks. I appreciate not everyone will like this longer story format with a different story each month, but for those who like a real story to get lost in - this series will satisfy your thirst for something different. Put some good headphones on and listen to this when you’re somewhere quiet or you’ve got a substantial drive to yourself. I personally love listening to this series whilst walking alone at night (although I appreciate that’s not safe everywhere in the world). Highly recommended!!!!!
