Route 58 by Emma Gibson

Today’s journey is a new fiction work by Emma Gibson: Happily, Ever Future. The optimum place to listen to it is on the route 58 tram, starting at stop 45, Bell Street and ending at stop 4, Collins Street, but it can be listened to on any tram at any time. In the near future, Melbourne is selected for a bold experiment to solve a wicked problem plaguing urban planners around the globe: will jamming mobile phones during peak hour commutes improve safety? Today’s journey is a new fiction work by Nadia Bailey: Route 35. You’re startled awake on board route 35, and are unsettled to find that you recognise four of your fellow passengers from your dream. On the tram from Box Hill to Port Melbourne, a young woman grieves for her beloved late uncle. As she considers the inheritance he left her and her brother — a house in the Tasmanian forest for the two siblings to live the full life that he could not — the tramline traces the path of their time together over the years. As her memories unfold, and the past catches up with the present, it becomes clear that her brother has different plans for the gifted house, and that the death of their uncle may not have been an expected tragedy... Today’s journey is a new fiction work by Sharmini Kumar: School Days Past. A woman has taken her 12 year old daughter for high school orientation at a school near Essendon train station. As they take the tram home (towards Airport West), the mother tells her daughter about her own high school days, the memories she has of catching the tram, of meeting boys at the Airport West shopping centre, and her experiences of high school. She talks to her daughter about enjoying life, about friends and family. It is clear that the daughter is not particularly interested, even though she loves her mother.
