A Stunning Series.
This series of season-long explorations into obscure parts of history, or the obscure facts of parts of history we think we know, is a stunning gem in Grim & Mild's already gleaming crown. It could so easily turn salacious and lurid, but the writers have treated their subjects with respect and dignity, whilst maintaining compelling narratives through the grit and weathered sheen of truth in history. I thought the look into Spiritualism in the US (and oh my goodness, how deeply it was involved in the politics that made America a better place to be for everybody), was going to be hard to top. Then they did their latest season on Rasputin, and it is rare to see documentarian media treat the subject with such tact and honesty. His victims are respected, his humanity is explored, and the context of his life is provided without unnecessarily gory detail. Bravo. I cannot wait for the next season, this podcast has become one of my favourites for sure.
Captivating. But.
These were as a whole pretty fantastic. The in depth research is clearly present. Mixed with Aaron Mahnke’s vivid storytelling is truly captivating. Until you get to parts where actual historians are talking. I found it very off putting and jarring. Clearly people that do not share Aaron’s narrative ability. And yes I understand the importance of having the historians give their opinion. But it definitely takes away from the whole experience.
Rasputin
Interesting but why does the speaker talk so fast. Slow down for your own good.
