VHS Rewind! - Cuckoo Star Wars Music Special

VHS Rewind! - Cuckoo Star Wars Music Special

In this very special episode, VHS Rewind! brings to you a very special movie presentation from an alternate galaxy far, far away.

One of the most fascinating by-products of the phenomenal success of STAR WARS was the proliferation of music knock-offs based on, or inspired by, the film, the film’s music, its characters, or even just the space setting. Naturally, Disco tracks were most prominent (it was 1977, after all), but a little digging uncovers other genres that wanted to cash in on that STAR WARS ka-ching (funk, R&B, country!) and a few genres that we at VHS Rewind cannot categorize).

So we have created this alternate presentation of the STAR WARS story for your listening pleasure: we have the narrative of the plot (courtesy of a vintage read-along book – like BEATLEMANIA, an incredible simulation of your favorite characters) and cherry-picked a soundtrack comprised of these music knock-off tracks.

Prepare yourself for a hilarious, 70mm, Dolby stereo movie going experience.

VHS Rewind! - An Interview with retro author, Allison Preston

VHS Rewind! - An Interview with retro author, Allison Preston

I have followed Allison Preston's work for quite some time and originally came across her talent while listening to the podcast, The Retroist. Allison puts out work so often and puts so much thoughtful commentary and research into each article that I truly cannot recommend it more!  We discuss our love of retro things, the now defunct X-Entertainment, Cricut and so much more in this discussion.

Allison, Thank you so much for taking the time to speak with me and I look forward to what amazing things you will be working on next!

VHS Rewind! - 1980s Soundtrack Tunes

VHS Rewind! - 1980s Soundtrack Tunes

"VHS Rewind hopes that everyone is doing well and staying healthy during these crazy times.

We are presenting another all-music show, this time focusing on 1980s soundtrack songs.

Here are some of the ground rules: the song must have appeared (i.e. been heard) in a 1980s movie and/or its must have appeared on a soundtrack album for that movie (sometimes it was one or the other). We didn’t take the easy way out (no BEVERLY HILLS COP tunes; no FLASHDANCE tunes, no FAME, no “Power of Love” from BACK TO THE FUTURE). We went for deep, deep, deep cuts on the choice of movies and the songs to feature.

For those who grew up in the 1980s, we are certain this episode will being back memories and make you smile (and maybe want to watch some of the featured movies again since you may have forgotten them); if you did not grow up in the 1980s, we are certain this episode will make you wish you did live through the 1980s and make you smile (and maybe want to watch some of the featured movies again since you may not have heard of them). We hope this episode gives you a 90-minute escape from reality and takes you back to the glorious world of 1980s soundtrack music." - Chris Hasler

VHS Rewind! - Louis CK's I Love You, Daddy (2017)

VHS Rewind! - Louis CK's I Love You, Daddy (2017)

Following on the heels of last episode’s review of Woody Allen’s A RAINY DAY IN NEW YORK through the prism of our current MeToo culture, VHS Rewind heads into the center of an even more dangerous storm as our new episode focuses its attention on auteur writer-director-star Louis (serial-masturbator-in-front-of-trapped-women) CK’s, I LOVE YOU DADDY. Where the charges against Woody Allen were tried in a court of law and Woody was cleared, and may be a victim of the Me Too vigilantes, auteur Louis CK has confessed to his serial-masturbation-in-front-of-trapped-women actions – how can we put that aside when watching this directorial effort? Louis CK seems to be aping the Woody Allen look and style (shooting in black-and-white) but is auteur Louis another Woody (writing/directing-wise)? Is auteur Louis CK’s film full of neurotic characters or deeply disturbed characters, starting with Louis CK’s main character (who resembles, well, Louis CK) and including John Malkovich’s Woody-esque film director who may have molested a child? Is Chloe Grace Moretz hot in a string bikini?

Join us as we whip this episode out and whack off in your ears with answers to these and other conversation topics.

VHS Rewind! - Woody Allen’s A RAINY DAY IN NEW YORK (2019)

VHS Rewind! - Woody Allen’s A RAINY DAY IN NEW YORK (2019)

VHS Rewind dips its toe into some potentially controversial waters by beginning a short series of episodes reviewing films that have fallen victim to the vigilantes known as the MeToo movement. First up is MeToo whipping boy Woody Allen’s A RAINY DAY IN NEW YORK…Sexual abuse claims continue to dog Woody despite the claims having been investigated and "no credible evidence" having been found to support these allegation. Can A RAINY DAY IN NEW YORK be viewed on its own merits? Or does the director’s alleged peccadilloes rain down on any entertainment value the film has? Should art in any form be banned because of the artist’s possibly tawdry personal life?

Has the MeToo movement, which can ruin an individual’s life on mere hearsay, gone too far?

Oh yeah, this is going to be a very stormy conversation so bring your umbrellas and give us a listen.
