He Was Just the Leadout Man... Then This Happened

Week 2 of the Vuelta a España is a wrap! Enric Mas emerged stronger, 4-time champion Primož Roglič slipped to third, Matthew Brennan became this edition's breakout sprinter, and a new Slovenian superstar announced his arrival. Oh, and Wout Van Aert went from super-domestique to 2-time stage winner and my pick for Worlds frontrunner.  In this video: Podium Report: Enric Mas strengthened his grip during week 2, gaining more time on his rivals on Stage 12. But It’s not over yet. Thursday's Stage 18 is a flat, 20-mile time trial. On a good day, Roglič is capable of taking 2 minutes from pure climbers like Gall and Carapaz, and potentially half that from Mas. I think we’ll have a real fight on our hands entering the final high-mountain passes. Who’s your pick for the overall podium in Madrid? Wout Van Aert is the story of this Vuelta. For two weeks he's been Visma's Swiss Army knife leading out Matthew Brennan, controlling breaks and doing the invisible work. In Stage 11, he delivered Brennan to his third stage win of the race. During Stage 13, Visma ran a clinic: both Van Aert and Brennan made the day's break. Van Aert attacked 2 miles out and beat Valentin Paret-Peintre one-on-one. Stage 15 was a shortened, scorching stage into Córdoba. Another win. Two in three days. That's 16 career Grand Tour stage wins now, making him 4th overall among active racers. But it's the variety that separates Wout: he excels at sprints, time trials, mountains, breakaways, classics-style finishes, and all three Grand Tours. Right now, nobody in the peloton is doing more.  Americans in the Mix: Five Americans lined up for the 2026 Vuelta: Sepp Kuss, Matthew Riccitello, Will Barta, Kevin Vermaerke, and Larry Warbasse. Spicy Takes: Three takes with 🌶️.  Cutting Stage 15 was definitely the way to go. With expected temperatures above 104 degrees, organizers didn't wait for somebody to pass out. They cut about 50 miles of racing. The original route would have meant 2+ more hours racing in extreme heat. A shorter stage meant better racing, and healthier riders.  Also Whatever Slovenia’s got going on at the moment, the rest of the world needs to follow the same recipes. This tiny country has produced 11 Grand Tour wins with Pogačar and Roglič. Now Jakob Omrzel wins solo atop Calar Alto at 20 years old, in his first Grand Tour? What are they putting in the water over there? Wout van Aert is the man to beat at the World Championships. I'm calling it now. Pogačar Abandons After Brutal Crash

We are nine stages into the Vuelta a España, and cycling's most dominant rider just had the worst day of his career. Tadej Pogačar — untouchable, unbreakable — crashed violently and had to abandon. Then, on the hardest mountain stage of the Vuelta so far, Enric Mas did more than just inherit red — he earned it. Oh, and there's an American lurking in here too.  In this video: Podium Report: Pogačar never even got his hands up to protect himself. That's what made his crash so brutal. Pogačar's front wheel caught a rock and launched him over the handlebars. It happened so fast, his face and shoulder took the full force at race speed. It was a brutal, bloody reminder that nothing is inevitable in this sport. The damage: a concussion, a displaced clavicle fracture, and a C7 cervical fracture. Surgery on the clavicle is delayed until doctors clear the concussion. At 27 years old, Pogačar has abandoned a Grand Tour for the very first time. In fact, it's the first Grand Tour he's ever started without finishing on the podium — a string of 9 straight Grand Tours going back to 2019.  Americans in the Mix: Five Americans lined up for the 2026 Vuelta: Sepp Kuss, Matthew Riccitello, Will Barta, Kevin Vermaerke, and Larry Warbasse. Spicy Takes: Two takes with 🌶️. Vuelta organizers are actually doing a good job — and I don't say that lightly. Remember last year? A total of 7 Vuelta stages were directly interrupted or shortened due to political protests, and organizers were caught without a plan. This year? When a violent hailstorm hit 10 miles from the Stage 3 finish, they quickly got everyone to safety then canceled the race. But officials erased the entire stage, including sprint and KOM points riders had already earned safely. Why erase racing that already happened? I’d love to know! What do y'all think?  ⏱️ Spotify Chapters  [00:00] – Welcome to VIBE Racing!  [00:26] – Podium Report: Pogačar’s Dominance, Vingegaard’s Crash, Remco’s Climb [03:38] – Americans in the Mix: Quinn Rides for Team, Sepp Has a New Role [05:57] – Spicy Takes 🌶️  Vuelta Organizers Save the Day. What the Tour de France Taught Me About Modern Cycling

The Tour is still vibrating in my bones after that finale up Montmartre and along the Champs-Élysées. Tadej Pogačar joined cycling's most exclusive club — five Tour victories. When his team faltered, he blew our minds on Alpe d'Huez, then moonlighted as a superdomestique. The Americans? Sepp Kuss crashed twice in the closing stretch of the Queen Stage. And Quinn Simmons was named best teammate again. Stay tuned for this week's Spicy Take — it might change how you feel about the Tour de France. In this episode: Podium Report: Tadej Pogačar sealed yellow in FAR FROM BORING fashion, finishing 6 minutes clear of the best mountain version of Remco Evenepoel we've ever seen. Isaac del Toro rounded out the podium and nabbed white in his Tour debut. But it was HOW Pogačar did it that had my commentary team debating each other. Here are FIVE THINGS I learned at the Tour. Americans in the Mix: No American won a stage or cracked the top 10, but Sepp Kuss, Quinn Simmons, Sean Quinn, and Matthew Riccitello shone in their team roles, finishing top 25 overall. Impressive! Spicy Takes: Three takes with extra 🌶️. The hottest Tour de France ever sparked a safety-vs-TV showdown. A neutralized GC produced the wildest finish of a 21st stage in the 123-year history of the Tour. And Pogačar's Alpe d'Huez masterclass crushed a 31-year-old record, sending UAE's doubters a brutal message. ⏱️ Spotify Chapters  [00:00] – Welcome to VIBE Racing!  [00:30] – Podium Report: Pogačar’ Fifth + FIVE Things I learned at this year’s Tour [01:02] – Pogacar: Maillot Jaune [01:24] – Del Toro: Maillot Blanc [01:57] – Carapaz: Maillot à Pois [02:26] – Pederson: Maillot Vert [02:54] – Seixas: He delivered [03:19] – Americans in the Mix [03:40] – Quinn Simmons [04:01] – Sepp Kuss [04:29] – Sean Quinn [04:59] – Matthew Riccitello [05:19] – Brandon McNulty [05:43] – Matteo Jorgenson [06:00] – Spicy Takes 🌶️ Safety v TV $$$$ [06:50] – Spicy Takes 🌶️ Stage 21 Fireworks: I was wrong! Vingegaard Is OUT... Hours After a 2 a.m. Doping Test

It's been a dramatic second week of the Tour de France. Tadej Pogačar just keeps winning, Jonas Vingegaard is out with a broken collarbone, and Remco Evenepoel out-climbed everybody's expectations. Americans? Stick around for Quinn Simmons' high five that was seen around the world and my prediction for a Sepp Kuss stage win. And this week's Spicy Take is maybe more of a spicy question for you. Let's go. In this episode: Podium Report: Pogačar's 4th stage win this year and 25th all-time. The fastest Tour ever raced. Evenepoel's mountain breakthrough silences doubters. And with Vingegaard gone, the GC podium fight is now a youth movement: Del Toro, Seixas, and Ayuso all chasing at once. Americans in the Mix: Four Americans sit inside the top 25 on GC: Sepp is at 17th, Brandon 19th, Sean 20th, and Quinn 25th. All are playing key roles. Spicy Takes: Big controversy. Did the 2am surprise doping control play any casual role in Jonas Vingegaard's stage 15 crash and Tour exit? We consider the pros and cons of surprise control tests. 🌶️ Have opinions? Pogačar Just Ended the GOAT Debate

The 2026 Tour de France is in its second week, and stage 6 might be the greatest day this sport has seen in the modern era. Tadej Pogačar didn't just win over the Tourmalet — he buried Jonas Vingegaard by 2:40 and obliterated the all-time Strava KOM. We're pulling up Pogačar's power file — the numbers are absurd. Plus: for the American in the Mix, we go deep on Sean Quinn's first week. In this episode: Podium Report: Let's appreciate this performance — we're watching Pogačar do what no racer has done since Eddy Merckx. He is at the top of his game. Americans in the Mix: Sean Quinn's magical and rollercoaster first week. Spicy Takes 🌶️: Having two GC co-leaders on the same team to "keep your options open" is not great for morale, team cohesion, or sponsor satisfaction.
