Predicting the Future: How Data Science Guides Decisions in Markets and Health

How do you make smart decisions when the future is uncertain? In this episode, Greg sits down with his co-hosts David Vogel (CEO) and Barry Miller (President) of Voloridge Investment Management and Voloridge Health, along with Lead Strategy Manager Daniel Hammack, for a conversation about how data science helps guide decisions in complex systems like financial markets and human health.Daniel shares his journey from being Voloridge Investment Management’s first intern to becoming a Lead Strategy Manager working on predictive modeling. The conversation also explores his experience placing second in a global competition predicting lung disease outcomes, offering an interesting bridge between modeling biological systems and financial markets.Together, the group spends most of the episode unpacking what data science actually is in plain English. They discuss how predictive models work, why probabilities matter more than certainty, and why a system that is right just slightly more than half the time can still produce powerful long-term results. They also explore the risks of groupthink in both finance and health, how data-driven thinking can challenge widely accepted narratives, and why improving the quality of decisions over time may be the most important edge we have. This is a thoughtful conversation about uncertainty, independent thinking, and how data science can help us make better decisions in an increasingly complex world.

    11. Heart of a Champion: Resilience, Recovery, and the Power of Proactive Health

In this powerful and inspiring episode, Greg and Barry sit down with world-class triathlete Timothy O’Donnell, whose athletic career includes podiums at the IRONMAN World Championships and years competing at the highest level of endurance sport.  But Tim’s most remarkable story didn’t happen on a podium — it happened in the middle of a race, when he suffered a widowmaker heart attack, a condition with only a 12% survival rate. Tim not only survived — he came back stronger, and now uses his platform to advocate for proactive, preventative health. This episode explores Tim’s journey through elite sport, the day that changed his life forever, and the mindset he used to reset, reframe, and rebuild. You’ll hear how he’s shifted from purely performance-driven metrics to a deeper focus on healthspan, longevity, and monitoring key biomarkers. The conversation also brings Voloridge Health’s mission into focus — combining personal stories with our commitment to using data science and predictive scores to stay ahead of disease. We revisit the five biomarkers we believe everyone should track, and how insights from tools like Volo Age and Volo Scores are helping people take control of their health before symptoms even arise. Whether you're an athlete, a weekend warrior, or just someone looking to live longer and live better — this episode delivers insights, emotion, and a call to action.

    8. Beyond A1C: The Hidden Predictors of Diabetes Risk

Want to see the charts and references we mention? Watch the video version on YouTube! If you’ve ever been told you’re “pre-diabetic,” this episode is for you. We’re taught to watch our A1C — the main marker used to diagnose prediabetes and Type 2 diabetes — and many assume that if it’s below 5.7, we’re in the clear. But what if that’s not the whole story? In this episode of Vitality Vision by Volo, we explore groundbreaking findings from the Volo data team, based on over 28,000 individuals from the UK Biobank — all with the same A1C score of 5.7.Joining me are David Vogel (CEO and Chief Science Officer of Voloridge Health) and Barry Miller (President), as we unpack which biomarkers truly matter — and why A1C alone isn’t enough to assess your health. We break down the top predictors that separate the “healthy 5.7s” from the “unhealthy 5.7s,” including:  BMI: The healthy group averaged 10 points lower HDL (good cholesterol): 18 points higher for men, 25 points higher for women SHBG (Sex Hormone-Binding Globulin): Doubled in the healthy group Urate: 1.5 points lower — linked to kidney and metabolic health ALT & GGT: Key liver enzymes, dramatically lower in the healthy cohort Triglycerides: Less than half the level of the unhealthy group CRP (C-reactive protein): A marker of inflammation — cut in half for men, and 75% lower in women LAR (Leptin-Adiponectin Ratio): Higher in the healthy group, a sign of better insulin sensitivity LDL: Slightly higher in the healthy group, but balanced when adjusting for cholesterol medication usage This podcast is not intended as medical advice. 7. Physiology Unlocked: Measuring the Human Body with Tristan Starling-Smith

Episode 7 may be our best conversation to date. We welcome our first-ever guest to Vitality Vision by Volo — Our exercise physiologist Tristan Starling-Smith, who brings a wealth of knowledge, clarity, and passion to the discussion.   In this episode, we dive into what physiology really is and why it matters not only for elite athletes but for anyone who wants to live with more energy and health. Tristan walks us through the VoloClub Performance Lab and explains the tools of his trade — VO2 max, lactate testing, resting metabolic rate, body composition, and DARI motion capture — unpacking what each test measures, what insights they provide, and how actionable they are in practice.   We explore how these protocols, once reserved for Olympians and professionals, are now being brought to the other 99% of people through the VoloClub. Tristan shares how everyday individuals — including those struggling with body fat, metabolic health, or simply wanting to feel better — can benefit from the same science that has guided champions.   The conversation also connects physiology with data science and predictive health: how these measures feed into the development of the future Volo Scores, why waist circumference is more powerful than BMI, and how improving metrics like metabolic health isn’t just about disease avoidance but about feeling great, moving well, and improving quality of life.   Along the way, David and Barry share their perspectives and experiences in the lab, including the role of biomarkers and how data-driven insights combine with hands-on testing to create a fuller picture of health.   We finish with a lively round of overrated/underrated, where Tristan weighs in on cold plunges, saunas, Zone 2 training, VO2 max, lactate testing, and more.   This episode captures the perfect blend of science, practicality, and fun — a conversation that sets the standard for everything we hope this podcast can be.

    6. A1C, ApoE & The Future of Knowing What’s Coming

This episode opens with a celebration—Voloridge was named the Best Midsize Business to Work For in South Florida by the Sun Sentinel—and quickly shifts into one of the most impactful conversations yet. Greg, Barry, and David break down two of the most powerful (and misunderstood) markers of long-term health: A1C and ApoE protein. First, David unpacks the science behind A1C—a marker of long-term blood sugar regulation—and explains why it’s consistently showing up across our models as a strong predictor of disease.  The team explores why even fit individuals can have high A1C, how it differs from insulin and glucose, and what actions can actually help lower it. Then, they turn to ApoE protein, a rising star in the world of cognitive health prediction. While many people know the ApoE gene, David explains why the protein may be even more valuable for early detection of cognitive decline—and how it connects to future offerings in the Volo platform. In this episode: What A1C really measures—and why it matters for metabolic and cardiac health How diet, exercise, CGMs, and stress affect A1C—and how to act on it  Why the ApoE protein is showing promise beyond genetic testing The difference between genetics, epigenetics, and proteomics How we’re building tools to make this kind of insight available to everyone The conversation wraps with another round of underrated or overrated, where Greg, David, and Barry weigh in on everything from zone 2 cardio to CGMs and AI health coaches. This is a clear, candid, and deeply useful look at how data science is redefining what we can know—and what we can do—about our health.
