Are wildfires moving faster than Ontario can fight them?

Guest: Star climate change reporter Marco Chown Oved Wildfire season started early this year, with states of emergency declared in Saskatchewan and Manitoba, and intense fire activity across Alberta. But while much of the national attention has focused on the west, Ontario is quietly facing a growing crisis of its own. One of the largest fires in the province's north—recently described by officials as a "sleeping giant"—has now scorched more than 175,000 hectares, triggering the evacuation of hundreds from Deer Lake First Nation and over 2,000 people from Sandy Lake First Nation. Wildfires in Ontario are no longer limited to remote northern forests. Fueled by climate change, they're burning hotter, spreading faster, and pushing deeper into regions once thought safe. And experts warn that the systems in place to fight them are falling dangerously behind. Canada set to have the best EV supply chain in the world

While China dominates the EV supply chain today, the ranking — put out by Bloomberg — really looks at the future and singles out Canada for having better environmental and labour standards, as well as a robust automotive sector and vast mineral deposits. But battery manufacturing itself is still in its infancy. There are plans to build three battery plants in Canada — Volkswagen in St. Thomas, Northvolt in Saint-Basile-le-Grand and NextStar in Windsor. NextStar was the first battery plant announced and is the furthest along, and while it's not up and running yet, they agreed to show us around.

A tale of two protests: Windsor vs. Ottawa

Guests: Jacob Lorinc, Business Reporter, The Star, and Tonda MacCharles, Senior Reporter for the Star's Ottawa Bureau. As the "Freedom Convoy" protests that have paralyzed Ottawa's downtown enters its third week, Canadians saw police dismantle a blockade at the Ambassador Bridge in Windsor after a weeklong protest. The demonstrations in Windsor disrupted a route that carries hundreds of millions of dollars in goods everyday and had already had a ripple effect into other industries like automotive manufacturing. Police moved in quickly and promptly quelled the disruption. In Ottawa, as the authorities look to invoke acts with more powers to deal with the occupation, several Ottawa residents have started to counter protest on their own, as they fail to see any semblance of a plan to deal with the protesters.
