  • Disney: The Renaissance and the Empire

    10 Aug

Disney: The Renaissance and the Empire

In 1984, the Walt Disney Company was worth more dead than alive. Disney Animation — the heart of Walt's famous flywheel — had stagnated for years, bleeding away talent while corporate raiders circled, salivating over offers to sell off the film library to MGM and offload the parks to hotel operators. But what followed instead was the greatest turnaround in media history under Michael Eisner and Frank Wells. Beauty and the Beast. The Lion King. Broadway. Bringing the Disney Vault home on VHS and DVD. And the greatest media acquisition of all time — ESPN. And then... it all almost fell apart. Again. Euro Disney turned into a money pit. Boardroom and executive infighting ran rampant. Animation descended into a dumpster fire. (Remember Chicken Little? Us neither.) Comcast — Comcast!! — tried to steal the company via a hostile takeover. Out of the chaos, a new generation of Disney management emerged under Bob Iger to stage yet another epic comeback with Pixar, Marvel and Lucasfilm, creating the defining media empire of the 21st century…until the tech companies came along. • The Walt Disney Company

    The Walt Disney Company

The Walt Disney Company is the most successful enterprise ever created for monetizing human nostalgia. Today it’s the king of global entertainment, holding the intellectual property rights to the childhood memories of billions of people (including, likely, all of you) and is a reliable, predictable profitable business. But it didn’t start that way. During Walt’s era, Disney operated like an unhinged moonshot factory, blowing its finances on one seemingly crazy project after another, like the very first feature-length animated film or a theme park inspired by Walt's fascination with model trains (spoiler: Disneyland). Walt’s relentless ambition to bet the company over and over again not only created some of the most monumental artistic achievements of the 20th century (Snow White, Fantasia, Disney Imagineering), but also resulted in the accidental invention of the modern “flywheel” business model. In this episode, we tell the story of the ultimate marriage of art, commerce, and engineering — The Walt Disney Company: Walt's Era. Save money on home internet, removing hidden PC malware & choosing the right TV antenna (189, August 29, 2026)

Rich talked about shopping around for high-speed internet and shared tools and tips to help you find a better plan, faster speeds or a lower price. Apple has set September 9 for its next big event, where we’re expecting to see the new iPhone 18 Pro models and Apple’s first foldable iPhone. Matthew is having issues with his Sonos speakers disappearing and not showing up in the Sonos app. Mike in the South Bay runs a small IT company and says he’s seeing fake invitation scams that can secretly install remote-access software on computers. He found that an app called Uninstalr can successfully detect and remove it. TechSpot article Shelly is wondering if she should sign up for Guardio. Rich says the service asks for a lot of access to your accounts, and many of its protections can be handled on your own. He recommends turning on Chrome’s Enhanced Safe Browsing, avoiding suspicious links and phone numbers in unsolicited messages, and freezing your credit. Gary in Laguna Niguel wants to know if his prepaid T-Mobile plan supports satellite connectivity on his Samsung Galaxy A54. Rich mentioned Cord Cutter Weekly’s big list of streaming deals to help you save on your favorite services. Michael asked about the Glide smart cane for people who are blind or have low vision. Rich also mentioned the WeWALK smart cane and the Oko app and CSUN Assistive Tech Conference exhibitor list. NFL has a tool that tells you where you can watch every game called NFL Ways to Watch. Chandler Hatton of Fairphone will discuss the company’s first phone sold directly in the U.S. and why it is designed to be repairable. Rich mentioned a Samsung Messages clone beind devleoped by an independent developer called Messages by OzarksMade. AwareCA is California’s answer to Watch Duty, helping you track wildfires with information directly from CAL FIRE. Andrew in Ventura wants to know how to delete location suggestions off his iPhone. Two places to go: Settings > Privacy & Security > Location Services > System Services > Significant Locations & Routes > Clear History … and Apple Maps > Places > Visited Places > Clear History Ron checked out I Like Movies after hearing about it on the show, but found another movie-tracking app he really likes called Seen It. Rich agrees it’s an excellent option. It works on both iPhone and Android, has no ads, and is completely free. One downside Rich noticed: you can’t sort by star rating or MPAA rating, and there’s no option to create multiple watch lists. Tyler the Antenna Man will explain how to choose the right over-the-air TV antenna. He mentioned the Philips Rabbit Ears, Channel Master Flatenna, Mornixol outdoor antenna, Antennas Direct ClearStream 2V or Max V, and the 5-Star Yagi antenna. To check reception in your area, he recommends rabbitears.info, the FCC DTV Reception Maps, and antennaweb.org. Call 1-888-RICH-101 (1-888-742-4101) to join in! Email your question here. While performing routine file maintenance on classified systems, he discovered a briefing for the Immaculate Constellation program, an operational SAP governing global surveillance of UAP. He reported through proper channels, became a whistleblower to Congress, and is the primary source behind the public revelation of Immaculate Constellation. In this conversation, Brown describes what the program actually does, reveals a classified incident involving a triangle UFO over Russian naval vessels, discusses oral traditions of agreements between the U.S. and non-human intelligence, and explains why he believes our minds are no longer sovereign. SaaStr 875: Who Owns Your Data Now? Agents vs. System of Record, ServiceTitan vs. Podium, Headless Salesforce, and Agentic Renewals on The Agents #013

SaaStr 875: Who Owns Your Data Now? Agents vs. System of Record, ServiceTitan vs. Podium, Headless Salesforce, and Agentic Renewals on The Agents #013 The agents are writing data faster than any human ever could - and systems of record aren't ready for it. This week on The Agents, Jason and Amelia dig into the biggest meta-theme of 2026: what happens when your AI agents become the primary user of your CRM, your MAP, and every other system you've built your business on? Together, they unpack the ServiceTitan vs. Podium blowup, where an agentic lead gen tool slowly became a competing system of record until ServiceTitan shut them off with 30 days' notice, and why this is just the first of many fights like it coming across SaaS. Then Amelia pulls back the curtain on how SaaStr actually runs Salesforce headless through 10K, what it means that their agents have written 40 gigabytes of data into Salesforce without either of them logging in, and why the storage math is going to force a reckoning for every vendor jacking up API prices right now. Plus: the renewal agent Amelia built that generates a fully custom, hyper-personalized pitch deck for every single customer, using headless Salesforce, Gamma, social data, podcast mentions, and Gmail. And why Clay plus ZoomInfo plus Cowork turned out to be the best enrichment stack their agents have found yet. If you're building on top of systems of record, selling to companies that are, or just trying to figure out how agents change the economics of SaaS data, this one is essential listening. Timestamps: 00:00 - Intro 02:00 - ServiceTitan cuts off Podium: what happened and why it matters 10:00 - 40 gigs in Salesforce and neither of us logged in 16:00 - The API pricing reckoning coming for systems of record 22:00 - How SaaStr runs Salesforce headless with 10K 30:00 - The renewal agent: no account left behind 42:00 - Narrative-first pitching: getting the agent to sell 50:00 - Clay + ZoomInfo + Cowork: the enrichment stack that actually worked 58:00 - What comes next: agentic inbound proposals SaaStr hosts the world's largest community for B2B software founders and executives.
