In this episode, we talk all things Dylan, from his mercurial public persona, to his controversial vocal style. We share stories of seeing Dylan live, and Marly conducts a Dylan-centric pop quiz.     Mo Troper + The Beatles

    Portland musician, producer, and writer Mo Troper zoomed into the Crooner’s Corner to discuss his latest project: an album-length cover of the Beatles’ classic 1966 album, Revolver. Mo shared what it was like to record such an instrumentally and vocally complex album at home and discusses what he learned from such an intimate and sustained exploration of the material. We weigh in on the eternal Lennon vs McCartney debate, and take the usual detour to talk about Mo’s dad. As a finale, Charley shares some of his cherished Mo-memorabilia and we reminisce about the Portland music scene of yore (meaning about 10 years ago.) Please excuse the poor audio quality. Mo is a professional who came to the Zoom call properly mic-ed, but things didn’t go quite so smoothly over in the Corner. Needless to say we have learned our lesson.

    Portland hip-hop artist Ms. Elle stopped by the Crooner's Corner to talk about her latest EP Culture and her new radio show Ladies to the Mic. Elle filled us in on what it's like to be a female rapper in Portland and how a major high school injury changed her musical trajectory. Though we discuss two of Elle's influences, Noname and Anderson Paak, she confesses that Mariah Carey remains her ultimate singing idol. We dish about the Trailblazers, our favorite teachers, and awkward run-ins with celebrities. Marly shares a traumatic experience with an eighth grade music teacher. Once again, we spend too much time talking about our dads. Then we dig deep into the brilliant and tragic lives of Marvin Gaye and Brian Wilson, two iconic voices whose dark pasts helped to spark some of the most beautiful singing the world has ever known. We give some unsolicited parenting advice, tackle our relationships with our dads, and Marly admits that she doesn't know her multiplication tables.
