  5. “The Future of Ethical Aquaculture” with Wasseem Emam (Ethical Seafood Research)

    EPISODE 5

“The Future of Ethical Aquaculture” with Wasseem Emam (Ethical Seafood Research)

In this EAStalk episode, Wasseem Emam of Ethical Seafood Research (ERC) joins us to explore advances in farmed fish welfare across both policy and practice in European aquaculture. We organise the conversation in three parts: policy and standards, implementation by the sector, and social aspects. Wasseem explains how standards are evolving, the role of EU policy, and how other drivers, including NGOs and retailers, shape expectations across the value chain. He shares on-the-ground challenges farmers face when integrating welfare improvements, real examples of effective collaboration between researchers, policymakers and producers, and practical ways to scale innovations and operational welfare indicators for small and medium-sized farms. We also look at how public interest in ‘ethical’ food is shaping efforts to improve farmed fish welfare in Europe, who is leading today, and why education and knowledge sharing matter, including how EAS can help. Visit ESR's website - https://ethicalseafoodresearch.com/. Biography: Wasseem Emam is an aquatic ecologist and fish welfareresearcher with over 15 years of international experience across fisheries and aquaculture. In 2021, he founded Ethical Seafood Research, a non-profit advancing aquatic animal welfare through science, policy and industry partnerships. Wasseem has worked with the United Nations, European Parliament & Commission, WorldFish, WWF and others across Africa, Europe, North America and the Middle East where he's originally from. His work focuses on bridging scientific evidence and practical change to improve the treatment ofaquatic animals in aquatic food systems. He champions ethical, sustainable approaches that recognise the sentience and welfare needs of fish and other aquatic species. ___________________________________________________ The moderators of this episode are Alistair Lane, Executive Director of European Aquaculture Society (EAS), and Ana Visković, Project and Programme Manager (EAS).
