    Why I Left America--But Never Left Black America

In this Front Porch Talk, I'm Ama-Robin, and I'm returning from my summer break with a question I heard again and again: Why did you leave the United States? There are plenty of assumptions. A YAIT Story on Freedom and Belonging In this YAIT Story,  sistah-host, Ama-Robin, shares a quiet but unforgettable experience from a resort in Sweden. Nothing dramatic happened. No one said anything unkind. And yet, something changed the moment I realized I was the only Black person in the room. Meet me in YAIT Town as we explore what it feels like to be watched, to question your belonging, and to discover that freedom is about more than simply being allowed to enter a space. We'll begin with my story, then sit together to reflect on what it means to practice freedom, restore ourselves, and imagine a world where belonging isn't something we have to earn.     Have You Heard of Keti Koti? It's not too late to celebrate!

    Have you ever heard of Keti Koti?  I hadn't—until I was invited to a celebration in the Netherlands that opened my eyes to another powerful Black freedom celebration. Meet me in YAIT Town as we gather at Umoja Café, stroll through the Community Garden, and settle onto the Front Porch for a conversation about Keti Koti—a Black freedom celebration that changed the way I think about freedom. Together, we'll discover what Keti Koti is, why it matters, how it connects with Juneteenth, and what both celebrations can teach us about freedom, our shared history, and the work of closing the Freedom Gap. We will also discuss the freedom gap: The difference between what was promised and what is received! It is a real and enduring problem that Black communities are experiencing.  In this episode, we'll meet in YAIT Town, begin our conversation at Umoja Café, walk through the Community Garden, and end on the Front Porch with Mr. Kojo, Auntie Octavia, Mrs. Alberta Jenkins, and some of our village's young people. Inspired by a folktale about a bird seeking freedom, this episode invites you to breathe, reflect, and consider what freedom might feel like for you. Comforting Moments are short pauses designed to help us restore ourselves, reconnect with what matters, and remember that we are not alone.     Belonging Here: A Juneteenth Walk in YAIT Town

    If you've ever felt exhausted from navigating predominantly white spaces, this episode is for you. Today, we're taking a slow walk in YAIT Town. We'll spend time on the Front Porch with Auntie Octavia and Mrs. Jenkins, stroll through town with Mr. Kojo, stop by Crown & Glory Barber and Beauty Shop, and end our journey at Umoja Café, where Miss Ayeisha is serving free Friday grits, warm cornbread, hibiscus tea, and plenty of community. Along the way, we'll reflect on Juneteenth, belonging, freedom, memory, and what it feels like to be welcomed without having to earn it. This isn't a history lesson. It's an invitation. An invitation to imagine—and practice—a world where you are seen, valued, safe, and connected. A world where you belong. So come walk with me. You ain't imagining it. And you ain't alone.

    I was Expected to Move! Are You?

    If you've ever felt exhausted in predominantly white spaces, this episode is for you. Today we're talking about luggage. A flight attendant moved my bag so a (white) passenger could use the overhead bin space. It was a small moment. An easily dismissed moment. And yet it stayed with me. Why?  Because this story isn't really about the luggage. It's about who was expected to move. You ain't imagining this! In Beyond the Story, we explore the idea of "the movable person," James Baldwin's insights on being forced to alter oneself, and the historical echoes that can reveal seemingly small moments are actually much larger. If you've ever been expected to move, adjust, accommodate, or make yourself smaller to fit into a white space, I'd love to continue the conversation with you in the YAIT Town community on Skool.
