"Orthometria & Strength vs. Hypertrophy" with Dr. Stu Phillips, PhD

Season 2 Episode 13! I'm so freaking stoked for this episode! Dr. Stu Phillips, PhD joins the show this week. Stu is one of the leading protein and exercise science researchers in the WORLD. He's a senior lecturer at McMaster University in Ontario (we've had a lot of his students on the show), and like most Canadians... he may be the nicest person on the planet. I've been trying to get Stu on the show for over a year and I'm so honored that he was finally able to set aside some time to come and chat with the EIB audience. In this episode we discuss a new term that he's coined "Orthometria", basically the compulsion and obsession with measuring everything health and fitness related. I had a recent viral post inspired by this exact topic by Stu on my LinkedIn HERE. We discuss why obsessing over your tracker, HRV's, RHR, VO2, Sleep scores, etc, might actually be doing more harm then good. We also had some additional time to dive into a really interesting discussion about strength vs. hypertrophy. How the two are correlated, but why it's not always a 1:1 ratio. I think you will REALLY enjoy this episode and if you like it you should 100% check out Stu's new podcast with fellow McMaster scholar Dr. Martin Gibala called "Real Exercise Science". For those who like to watch the episodes we did have a small technical glitch in the recording where we lost Stu's video (towards the last third), but thankfully the audio stayed intact. I'm hoping to finish my new book in the next few months, with the same title as this podcast. In the interim if you love the show and want to support, I'd appreciate you picking up a copy of my first book "How 2 Look Good Naked". I've also recently launched a new Substack page with the same name as this podcast "Exercise is Bullshit". If you're a fan of the show I hope you'll consider checking out my Substack. It contains all of my podcast episodes as well as weekly articles dispelling common fitness industry myths. I'm so excited! "A Different Kind of Virtual Training" with Tony Burns

Season 2, Episode 12 This week I'm so excited to be joined by my good friend and colleague Tony Burns of "Burns Gym" in the UK. Tony and his brother Joe created Burns Gym with the goal of helping people improve their lives with personal training. Over the years its transformed into something much bigger. Burns Gym now specializes in creating incredibly high quality strength training workouts for senior care centers all over the UK and now into the US. Residents log in at a designated time and join in with other centers to work on mobility, strength, balance and more. Tony and Joe lead them through all of this remotely from their studio in Glasgow, Scotland wearing their kilts. In this episode we discuss the business, and how they've managed to scale it across the Atlantic and make it so successful. We also talk about the future of the company and how they hope to continue to help more seniors in the future. This one is an inspiration for aspiring entrepreneurs and trainers alike. There's no limit to what you can accomplish and the amount of people you can help with a great idea! I'm hoping to finish my new book in the next few months, with the same title as this podcast. In the interim if you love the show and want to support, I'd appreciate you picking up a copy of my first book "How 2 Look Good Naked". "The Rep Continuum for Athletes" with Jeremy Hudson

Season 2. Episode 11! Excited today to have on a brand new guest Jeremy Hudson. Jeremy is the founder of the Hudson Institute of Performance Enhancement (HERE) and a strength and conditioning coach in Canada. Jeremy and I connected recently on LinkedIn over a post I had made questioning the long standing paradigm of the strength endurance continuum. Prompted by a study from Brad Schoenfeld's lab out of Lehman College in New York (HERE). The long standing belief has been that strength, hypertrophy and muscular endurance exist on a spectrum of training. This desired outcome is mitigated based on things like the relative weight and reps performed for specific exercises and which type of outcome they would impact. More specifically if you're training for "strength" you should work in the 1-5 rep range with a relatively high percentage of your 1-RM. If for instance you wanted to target an muscular "endurance" outcome, you would use a lighter relative load and train with a higher rep volume (20+ reps). This is what I was taught in school and is still widely taught today. However, recent research (like the paper from Schoenfeld) has shown that this continuum is not as cut and dry as we once thought. Specifically with hypertrophy (muscle growth), there exists a wide range of reps and weights that create a desirable response. Jeremy and I discuss in detail what this means, not just for athletes, but also casual lifting enthusiasts and how to apply this new understanding to get the most out of your resistance training workouts. I think you'll really enjoy this in depth discussion into a nuanced topic, with a real expert practitioner. Please make sure to like and subscribe for more! I'm hoping to finish my new book in the next few months, with the same title as this podcast. "2026 ACSM Position Stand" with Dr. Brad Currier, PhD

Season 2 Episode 10! So excited today to release this episode. I was lucky enough to be put in contact with the lead author from the recently published 2026 ACSM position stand. Dr. Brad Currier joins the podcast to discuss the first update to the ACSM's guidelines in the last 17 years. Brad is a brilliant scientist and researcher who graduated under the tutelage of Dr. Stu Phillips from McMaster University in Canada. Stu will be coming back on the podcast soon and I'm so excited to chat with him! Since graduating Brad has moved on to a private company called Timeline as their manager for clinical trials. Timeline makes a variety of different research backed products with a major focus on cellular health and longevity. I would highly encourage anyone to check them out. Brad also has stayed close to the exercise science community and helped spearhead this research review which was a massive undertaking featuring some of the biggest names in exercise science. I'm so thrilled to share this episode as we discuss all the major findings and takeaways from this paper and how they apply to our listeners and how they can start putting them to work. This episode is filled with tons of actionable plans and will be very encouraging for exercise professionals! If you want to learn more about Brad you can find him on IG at Bradcurrier.phd. "High Level Sports Performance" with Elliot Newman

Season 2, Episode 9! We've got a great guest today. Elliot Newman joins me from all the way across the pond. Thankfully we did our episode well before the 4th of July, so there we no Independence Day jokes necessary. Elliot is a performance coach for elite athletes. You can learn more about his services HERE. Elliot and I connected on LinkedIn and struck up a conversation about different aspects of Strength & Conditioning, one of my biggest pet peeves. After hopping on a quick call I realized we had quite a bit in common in our approach to training and resilience, and I wanted to get him on the show to share his vast experience and expertise. In the episode we talk a lot about how to structure training programs for all athletes, not just high level performers. However, Elliot's vast experience with elite athletes certainly adds another exciting dimension to the conversation. The truth is... it's all a lot simpler than many in the strength and conditioning community would have you believe. I think the listeners will find a ton of value in this one, and I look forward to having Elliot on again in the future. I'm hoping to finish my new book in the next few months, with the same title as this podcast. "Salus Strength" with Kyra Seiler

Really cooking on Season 2 now! This week I'm ecstatic to be joined by a friend and colleague from all the way on the other side of the globe! Kyra Seiler joins me from Salus Strength in New Zealand. I met Kyra as she had heard about myself and Reformed Fitness through mutual colleagues. She was working her tail off (training over 100+ sessions a week) and need the accountability of working with a coach. She started training with Xavier (who owns Reformed Fitness) and at some point her and I started training. Kyra is an incredible HIT trainer with tons of experience and more importantly business acumen. For any of our listeners who've ever thought of opening their own studio, look no further than the information you'll gain from this young woman. She is the epitome of grit, determination, and positive vibes all around. She is also one of the top 3 hardest working people I've ever trained. That's not hyperbole, she works her freaking TAIL OFF! I can humbly say that she makes my training look pathetic. She's that bad ass. In this episode we chat about her journey opening up her own studio. How the process has gone so far, getting equipment, finding staff and learning how to run a business instead of just train clients. There's so much gold in this episode and Kyra's enthusiasm and passion just shines through. If you want to learn more about her company give them a follow on IG @Salus_Strength or check out her website HERE. "A Decade of Training & Health Coaching" with Jake Picht

Today I'm thrilled to be joined by another one of my colleagues, Jake Picht. Jake is a former college baseball player and current Health Coach and Exercise Physiologist with Reformed Fitness. I've had the pleasure of working with Jake on and off for close to a decade now and I've met few better trainers ever in my time in the industry. Jake shares with us his in depth knowledge of strength training and how he made the transition to working completely remote for his training and health coaching services. We talk about some of the benefits of working remote, and many of the benefits. We also discuss at length some of the most important things to consider if you've ever thought about taking your business completely virtual. Between the two of us we've conducted over 50,000, 1-on-1 and small group workouts, in person and online. There are probably not two better trainers in the world when it comes to the nuances of high level coaching in the virtual space. I know you'll enjoy this episode and please make sure to like and subscribe. I'm hoping to finish my new book in the next few months, with the same title as this podcast. "First NPC Show & JackedNLeen Coaching" with Jack Stiele

Season 2, episode 6! Today's episode is a banger! If you've ever thought of competing in a bodybuilding show, you don't want to miss this one. I'm joined today by my friend and colleague Jack Stiele. Jack is an up and coming bodybuilding coach and competitor working out of the JackedNLeen Gym in Rogers, MN. He works directly with Jack Oosten, another former guest and the owner of JackedNLeen. Jack Stiele, or "little jack", as he's called at the gym, recently completed his first official NPC Bodybuilding show last fall. In this episode we discuss what that process was like. Grinding through the workouts, the meals, the prep. We also dive into Jack's coaching philosophy and what makes him tick as a coach. If you're thinking of doing a show and looking for a coach that can help you get you to your best possible stage ready physique, Little Jack, just might be your guy. If competition is less your style, but you simply want to be a more badass, robust, harder to kill human, you should give Jack a try as well. You can find his Instagram HERE, or reach out directly at jackstiele@jackednleen.com. I'm hoping to finish my new book in the next few months, with the same title as this podcast.
