THE PLAGUE (2025) Is Brutal for a Reason | Charlie Pollinger Interview (Cannes Breakout)

THE PLAGUE (2025) | Charlie Polinger on Childhood, Cruelty, and a Cannes Breakout When a film earns a 100% rating on Rotten Tomatoes, there’s often a quiet suspicion that it’s a critic’s darling—admired more than embraced. But Charlie Polinger’s debut feature THE PLAGUE is something rarer: a film that marries the visceral pull of a taut thriller with the intelligence and moral urgency of serious arthouse cinema. In this episode of INSIDE THE ARTHOUSE, we sit down with writer-director Charlie Polinger to discuss a film that has quickly become one of the most talked-about releases of 2025. Drawing from memories of his own pre-adolescence, Pollinger crafts a story that feels deeply personal while speaking uncomfortably—and urgently—to the present moment. THE PLAGUE explores how casual cruelty, once confined to private spaces, has become increasingly normalized and even rewarded in public life. The film premiered at Cannes, where it reportedly received an 11-minute standing ovation—an extraordinary response for a first feature led by a cast of unknown child actors. That reception wasn’t just about novelty. It was recognition of a filmmaker with a confident voice and a film that understands how to unsettle, provoke, and implicate its audience without sacrificing narrative momentum. THE PLAGUE is tense, unsettling, and deeply felt—a debut that suggests Pollinger is not only a director to watch, but one already operating with uncommon clarity and purpose. 🎙️ To learn more about one of The most striking films of the year, join us for our conversation with Charlie Pollinger—on INSIDE THE ARTHOUSE, starting now. @laemmle @officialRaphaelSbarge @CPolinger  @IFCFilmsUnlimited  IFCFilmsOfficial #InsideTheArthouse #FilmPodcast #ArthouseCinema #IndependentFilm #IndieFilm#FilmmakerInterview #FilmDiscussion #FilmAnalysis #MovieReview#FilmIndustry #FilmBusiness #FilmDistribution#LaemmleTheatres #GregLaemmle #RaphaelSbarge#NewFilmReleases #arthousefilm Video podcast exploring independent film, arthouse cinema, and the film industry. The Fight to Own Warner Brothers

The Fight to Own Warner Bros. | Hollywood Consolidation, Streaming Wars & the Future of Cinema In this episode of INSIDE THE ARTHOUSE, we step outside our usual filmmaker deep dives to examine a seismic moment in Hollywood—one that could reshape the film industry from top to bottom. Warner Bros., one of the oldest and most influential studios in cinema history, is officially up for sale. After weighing multiple offers, the company initially moved toward a deal with Netflix, a move that would fold more than a century of studio legacy into one of the world’s most powerful streaming platforms. But the story didn’t end there. Within days, Paramount, backed by tech titan Larry Ellison, launched a surprise counteroffer—turning the situation into a full-scale bidding war. None of these deals are finalized, and each faces significant regulatory hurdles. Still, the fact that Warner Bros. is even on the table speaks volumes about where the media landscape is headed. While arthouse cinema occupies a smaller corner of that ecosystem, the ripple effects of consolidation will shape what films get made, how they’re distributed, and whether audiences get to experience them on the big screen at all. To unpack what’s at stake, we’re joined by two experts: Ross Melnick, professor of Film and Media Studies at UC Santa Barbara and a leading voice on the history of exhibition, and Chris Yogerst, author of The Warner Brothers, one of the definitive histories of the studio now at the center of this fight. This conversation was recorded on December 10. Given how quickly events are moving, some details may shift—but our goal is to provide the context and historical insight needed to understand the forces at play and the possible futures ahead. So let’s get into it: how consolidation shapes the movies you love, the theaters that show them, and the cultural imagination they help build. Oscar Shortlisted | THE VOICE OF HIND RAJAB — A Girl’s Cry for Help

Oscar Shortlisted | THE VOICE OF HIND RAJAB — A Girl’s Cry for Help In the press kit for her urgent new film THE VOICE OF HIND RAJAB, Oscar-nominated filmmaker Kaouther Ben Hania writes that cinema “doesn’t report, it remembers. It doesn’t argue, it makes you feel.” That ethos reverberates through every frame of this devastating, Oscar-shortlisted work—an act of cinematic remembrance that bypasses rhetoric and lands directly in the body. Regardless of where one stands on the politics surrounding Gaza, THE VOICE OF HIND RAJAB is impossible to watch without being profoundly moved. This is narrative cinema as emotional reckoning. Based on the true story of six-year-old Hind Rajab, the film revisits the final hours of a child trapped inside her family’s bullet-riddled car after an attack leaves her surrounded by the bodies of her relatives. As Hind pleads for help, responders from the Palestinian Red Crescent Society remain on the phone, struggling to keep her calm while desperately attempting to secure safe passage for an ambulance. Ben Hania constructs the film around the actual emergency call recording, interwoven with performances by actors portraying the Red Crescent workers, resulting in a film that unfolds like a nerve-shredding thriller—precise, immersive, and emotionally overwhelming. Though rigorously researched and rooted in real events, the film is not a documentary. From a filmmaker nominated for both Best International Feature and Best Documentary, that distinction is intentional: this is cinema designed to make us feel. Selected as Tunisia’s official submission for the Academy Award for Best International Feature and recently named to the Oscar shortlist, THE VOICE OF HIND RAJAB opens theatrically in New York and Los Angeles on December 17, before expanding across the U.S. In this episode of INSIDE THE ARTHOUSE, we sit down with Kaouther Ben Hania to explore how this extraordinary film came to be, the ethical weight of dramatizing real trauma, and the power of cinema to preserve memory when the world moves on. 🎙️ Listen now to our conversation with Kaouther Ben Hania—only on INSIDE THE ARTHOUSE.  @laemmle   @OfficialRaphaelSbarge  @kaoutherbenhania  @watermelonpicturesco   @thepartyfilmsales   @clarakhoury1  https://www.youtube.com/@weluvwilla https://www.instagram.com/kaoutherbenhania #TheVoiceOfHindRajab #HindRajab #KaoutherBenHania #OscarShortlist #OscarShortlisted #AcademyAwards #BestInternationalFeature #InternationalFeature #TunisiaCinema #TunisianFilm #Palestine #Gaza #GazaStory #HumanRights #WarAndChildhood #TrueStory #BasedOnTrueEvents #PalestinianRedCrescent #RedCrescent #EmergencyCall #NarrativeCinema #SocialImpactFilm #PoliticalCinema #FestivalFilm #ArthouseFilm #IndieFilm #NewYorkMovies #LAMovies #USRelease #insidethearthouse The Voice of Hind Rajab film Hind Rajab true story Kaouther Ben Hania film Kaouther Ben Hania Oscar nominated director Oscar shortlisted international feature film Academy Awards Best International Feature shortlist Tunisia official Oscar submission film The Voice of Hind Rajab Oscar shortlist Gaza true story film Film about Gaza child Palestinian Red Crescent Society emergency call Emergency call recording film Based on true events narrative cinema Human rights arthouse film Political cinema emotional storytelling Social impact international film Middle East conflict film drama Arthouse thriller based on real events Childhood in war film New York Los Angeles theatrical release December 17 Indie international film US release Inside the Arthouse Kaouther Ben Hania interview Oscar shortlisted foreign language film Cinema that remembers not reports THE VOICE OF HIND RAJAB Directed by Kaouther Ben Hania Distributed by WILLA https://www.youtube.com/@weluvwilla With support from Watermelon Pictures and Film4 https://www.youtube.com/@watermelonpictures https://www.youtube.com/@Film4 Listen to the full conversation on INSIDE THE ARTHOUSE. This Documentary Proves You Don't Need Scripts for Drama

THE TALE OF SYLYAN:This Documentary Proves You Don't Need Scripts for Drama with DP Jean Dakar | INSIDE THE ARTHOUSE In our latest INSIDE THE ARTHOUSE interview, we’re joined by cinematographer Jean Dakar to talk about the quietly seismic documentary THE TALE OF SILYAN—the much-anticipated follow-up to Tamara Kotevska’s Oscar-nominated HONEYLAND. What begins as an investigation into how climate change is altering stork migration patterns in Macedonia becomes—over three years of filming—something bigger, stranger, and more human: a portrait of global economic pressure, the ripple effects of migration, the slow unspooling of rural life, and the delicate chain linking people, land, and wildlife. And here’s the flex: it often plays like a narrative feature… but nothing is staged. Every look, every turn, every hard-earned moment is real—captured with the kind of patience and precision that makes “truth” feel cinematic without ever polishing away the mess. We get into the weeds with Dakar on craft, access, ethics, and how you actually film reality as it’s changing in real time—plus what it means to build a visual language that’s immersive without feeling invasive. One Family. Seven Decades. A New Kind of Historical Film: All That's Left of You

They say journalism is the first rough draft of history—but what about films based on true events that bring the past to life on screen? Are they meant to serve as a historical record, or do they use history to reveal deeper emotional truths? In this episode of INSIDE THE ARTHOUSE, we’re joined by acclaimed filmmaker, writer, and actor Cherien Dabis to discuss her sweeping new film, ALL THAT’S LEFT OF YOU—a powerful Palestinian family drama that spans 70 years and traces the long emotional aftershocks of displacement. Set in motion by the Nakba and the 1948 expulsion from Jaffa, the film follows one uprooted family from the chaos of the 1948 war into life as refugees in the Occupied West Bank and beyond. Rather than simply recreating history, Dabis crafts a deeply human, multigenerational story about loss, survival, memory, and resilience—and how one moment of violence can reverberate through a family for decades. Dabis stars in the film alongside celebrated Palestinian actors from the legendary Bakri family—Adam Bakri, Saleh Bakri, and Mohammad Bakri—whose performances give the story striking intimacy and authenticity. After premiering to acclaim at the Sundance Film Festival, ALL THAT’S LEFT OF YOU won the Audience Award at the Sydney Film Festival and has been selected as Jordan’s official submission for Best International Feature at the Academy Awards (Oscars). Listen now for our in-depth conversation with Cherien Dabis about storytelling, history on film, Palestinian cinema, and what it means to bear witness through art—starting now on INSIDE THE ARTHOUSE.  @laemmle   @OfficialRaphaelSbarge   @cheriendabis   @adammbakri   @watermelonpicturesco   @TheMatchFactory @allthatsleftofyoufilm ALL THAT’S LEFT OF YOU, All That's Left of You film, Cherien Dabis, Palestinian cinema, Middle East cinema, Arab cinema, Palestinian film, multigenerational drama, family saga, historical drama, political drama, Nakba, 1948, Jaffa, Occupied West Bank, West Bank, displacement, refugees, intergenerational trauma, resilience, survival, memory, identity, human rights, conflict, protest, Sundance Film Festival, Sydney Film Festival Audience Award, Jordan official submission, Best International Feature, Academy Awards, Oscars submission, Bakri family, Adam Bakri, Saleh Bakri, Mohammad Bakri, INSIDE THE ARTHOUSE, indie film, arthouse film, festival film, auteur cinema #AllThatsLeftOfYou #CherienDabis #PalestinianCinema #PalestinianFilm #ArabCinema #MiddleEastCinema #IndieFilm #ArthouseFilm #FestivalFilm #HistoricalDrama #FamilySaga #MultigenerationalStory #Nakba #1948 #Jaffa #WestBank #OccupiedWestBank #Displacement #Refugees #IntergenerationalTrauma #Resilience #Survival #Memory #Identity #HumanRights #Sundance #SundanceFilmFestival #SydneyFilmFestival #AudienceAward #Oscars #AcademyAwards #BestInternationalFeature #Jordan #BakriFamily #AdamBakri #SalehBakri #MohammadBakri #InsideTheArthouse #FilmmakerInterview #CinemaPodcast #FilmPodcast #worldcinemas #arthouse #arthouseFilm @laemmle #BehindTheScenes #FilmDiscussion #MovieReview #NewReleases #NewFilmReleases #FilmLovers #Cinema #MoviePodcast #GregLaemmle #RaphaelSbarge #LaemmleTheatres #FilmDistribution #MovieIndustry #FilmBusiness Video Podcast Independent Film / Indie Film Arthouse Film / Arthouse Movie Film Lovers / Cinema New Movie Releases / New Film Releases Repertory Cinema / Classic Films / Classic Movies Filmmaker Interviews / Filmmakers (Directors, Writers, Producers) Film Distributors / Film Distribution Movie Industry / Film Business / Movie Business Behind-the-Scenes Insights Film Discussion / Movie Reviews / Film Analysis Greg Laemmle / Raphael Sbarge Laemmle Theatres Learn more about your ad choices. How They Made a Full-Length Movie for $7,000 | The Microbudget Filmmaking Miracle of BURT!

The Microbudget Filmmaking Miracle of BURT!   $7,000 might buy you a used car—but in Hollywood, it barely covers a single day of craft services on a studio film set. But in the world of microbudget filmmaking, $7K became the entire production budget for filmmakers Joe Burke and Oliver Cooper, who used that tiny sum to create a full-length, truly independent feature film. With a small crew, non-professional actors, shooting quickly, with a raw, natural shooting style, they crafted BURT— a miracle of sweetness and depth— a film that captures the spirit of classic indie cinema, echoing the charm of mumblecore pioneers like Andrew Bujalski, Greta Gerwig, and the Duplass Brothers. Having wowed audiences at numerous film festivals, Joe and Oliver are channeling the Cassavetes playbook—and releasing BURT themselves into theaters. On this episode of Inside the Arthouse, we wanted to talk to them about the inspiration for the film, their creative process, how they pulled off a feature on a shoestring budget, and the strategy behind bringing an independent film directly to audiences. BURT is a small gem of a film, and Joe and Oliver are great examples of the indie spirit. So if you're dreaming of selling your car to make a movie—or want to learn how authentic independent films get made—you’ll want to start this episode right now… on Inside the Arthouse. @Laemmle @OfficialRaphaelSbarge @joeBurkeFilm @theOliverCooper @kenjikamera2676 @caliphone_TimRutili #BURTMovie#BurtFilm #IndieFilm #IndependentFilm #MicrobudgetFilm #IndieCinema #MicrobudgetFilmmaking #LowBudgetFilm #DIYFilmmaking #NoBudgetFilm#IndieFilmmaker #makeamovie microbudget filmmaking how to make a movie for $7,000 no budget filmmaking DIY feature film independent filmmaking process American indie film style mumblecore filmmaking style #BehindTheScenes #FilmDiscussion #FilmmakerInterview #FilmPodcast #VideoPodcast #FilmAnalysis #CreativeProcess #StorytellingMatters #NewReleases #NewFilmReleases #FilmDistribution #FilmBusiness #MovieIndustry #IndieCinema #FilmFestivals #RepertoryCinema#Filmmaking #DirectorInterview #OnSetStories#arthouse #arthouseFilm @laemmle #BehindTheScenes #FilmDiscussion #MovieReview #NewReleases #NewFilmReleases #FilmLovers #Cinema #MoviePodcast #GregLaemmle #RaphaelSbarge #LaemmleTheatres #FilmDistribution #MovieIndustry #FilmBusiness Video Podcast Independent Film / Indie Film Arthouse Film / Arthouse Movie Film Lovers / Cinema New Movie Releases / New Film Releases Repertory Cinema / Classic Films / Classic Movies Filmmaker Interviews / Filmmakers (Directors, Writers, Producers) Film Distributors / Film Distribution Movie Industry / Film Business / Movie Business Behind-the-Scenes Insights Film Discussion / Movie Reviews / Film Analysis Greg Laemmle / Raphael Sbarge Laemmle Theatres Learn more about your ad choices. LEFT-HANDED GIRL: Taiwan’s Oscar Entry Redefining Indie Cinema

LEFT-HANDED GIRL: Taiwan’s Oscar Entry Redefining Indie Cinema with director Shih-Ching Tsou. LEFT-HANDED GIRL is the latest breakout in Taiwanese indie cinema—a vibrant, deeply personal coming-of-age story from filmmaker Shih-Ching Tsou, co-writer and frequent collaborator of multi–Oscar-winning director Sean Baker (Tangerine, The Florida Project, Red Rocket). Set against the electric pulse of Taipei’s night markets, the film follows a young girl pushing back against cultural expectations and discovering her own voice. It’s intimate, tender, and boldly cinematic—the kind of film that sneaks up on you and stays. Born out of a long creative partnership that began in an AFI editing class and evolved across years of filmmaking, LEFT-HANDED GIRL marks Tsou’s most personal work yet. Co-written and edited by Baker, the film has already drawn international acclaim, premiering at major festivals and earning a celebrated spot at Cannes. It is also Taiwan’s official submission to the 2025 Academy Awards for Best International Feature Film, powered by stunning performances from its unforgettable trio of lead actresses. On this episode of Inside the Arthouse, we sit down with Shih-Ching Tsou to explore her path to the film—how her collaborations shaped her craft, how she built this world from lived experience, and what it takes to break tradition in pursuit of your own creative truth. If you’ve ever felt torn between expectation and self-discovery, this conversation will hit home.
