Theatre, dance, performance and visual arts: Kunstenfestivaldesarts is a celebration of international contemporary creation. For three weeks in May, the festival invites artists both local and international to challenge our understanding of the world and present their bold artistic creations in some thirty cultural venues and public spaces in Brussels.

    Transformations Opéra Radio – Adeline Rosenstein (FR)

    FR - Il y a des choses que nous ne voyons qu’avec notre vision périphérique ; l’oreille flottante perçoit des voix que l’oreille attentive fuit. C’est dans ces interstices du silence que s’inscrit la performance théâtrale d’Adeline Rosenstein, Transformations Opéra Radio. Elle nous invite dans un salon acoustique aux multiples assises, une assemblée intime et fictive qui évoque un studio d’enregistrement et les lieux éphémères où un déchirement révolutionnaire peut se partager – la cabane, le lit, le passage. Partition à mi-chemin entre l’opéra et le podcast, cette performance radiodiffusée rapproche des témoignages de femmes ayant participé aux mouvements révolutionnaires qui ont transformé l’histoire de leurs pays, sans que l’histoire ne les retienne (Guinée-Bissau et Cap-Vert 1974-75, Palestine 1987, Mexique 1994, Tunisie 2011). Aux paroles enregistrées ou traduites, s’ajoutent des documents sonores reconstitués, des mots de chercheuses et des fragments musicaux, laissant apparaître les dynamiques patriarcales en marge de la lutte anti-impérialiste. De la solitude à la construction d’une sororité, à l’écart des discours, à la barbe de l’ennemi – celui qui veut que rien ne change – émerge une documentation de nos transformations intimes et politiques.     Selvagem & Lia Rodrigues – Fireflies Conversations (FR, PT)

    FR - Comment le mouvement et la connaissance s’influencent mutuellement ? Selvagem est une initiative qui lie les cosmologies autochtones aux pratiques artistiques, et qui met l'accent sur l'interconnexion et la vitalité de la nature. Lia Rodrigues est une chorégraphe reconnue pour son travail politique et poétique dans lequel la danse devient l'incarnation de la résistance, souvent en collaboration avec des communautés marginalisées au Brésil. Ensemble, iels discutent de la manière dont le corps et la forêt peuvent conserver la mémoire, l’histoire et le potentiel de transformation. Un échange où l'éducation, l’incarnation et la pratique artistique sont reconsidérées comme des outils de transformation radicale. NL - Hoe verhouden beweging en kennis zich tot elkaar? Selvagem is een initiatief dat inheemse kosmologieën en artistieke praktijken met elkaar verweeft, en de nadruk legt op onderlinge verbondenheid en de vitaliteit van de natuur. Lia Rodrigues is een choreografe die bekendstaat om haar politieke en poëtische werk waarin dans belichaming wordt van verzet, vaak in samenwerking met gemarginaliseerde gemeenschappen in Brazilië. Ze gaan in gesprek over hoe zowel een lichaam als een bos herinneringen, geschiedenis en het potentieel voor transformatie in zich dragen. Een uitwisseling waarin onderwijs, belichaming en artistieke praktijk worden heroverwogen als instrumenten voor radicale transformatie. EN - How do movement and knowledge intersect? Selvagem is an initiative that interweaves Indigenous cosmologies and artistic practices, and emphasises interconnectedness and the vitality of nature. Lia Rodrigues is a choreographer known for her political and poetic work in which dance becomes embodiment of resistance, often in collaboration with marginalised communities in Brazil. They engage in a conversation about how both a body and a forest hold memory, history and the potential for transformation. An exchange in which education, embodiment, and artistic practice are reconsidered as tools for radical transformation.     EN - In this lecture performance, conceived for the Free School, Elizabeth Povinelli focuses on the progressive disappearance of stars due to light pollution, and the loss of a magical relationship with the celestial vault. She engages in conversation with Federico Campagna, whose books Prophetic Culture and Technic and Magic offer a radical rethinking of reality in the face of modern decline. Together, they shed new light on how we perceive and experience the cosmos in an era of disappearance. FR - Dans cette conférence-performance créée pour la Free School, Elizabeth Povinelli se concentre sur la disparition progressive des étoiles due à la pollution lumineuse et sur la perte d'une relation magique avec la voûte céleste. Elle aborde avec Federico Campagna, auteur entre autres de Prophetic Culture et Technic and Magic, la réévaluation radicale de la réalité en réponse au déclin moderne. Ensemble, iels jettent une nouvelle lumière sur les façons dont nous percevons et expérimentons le cosmos à une époque de disparition.     Archivo de la Memoria Trans & Jack Halberstam – Fireflies Conversations (EN)

    EN - One of the outstanding figures in gender and queer theory studies, Jack Halberstam, published several books among which Trans* A Quick and Quirky Account of Gender Variability, and The Queer Art of Failure. He will be in dialogue with Archivo de la Memoria Trans, a collective dedicated to preserving and honouring the stories of trans communities by creating an alternative archive, a powerful counter-narrative against invisibility and stigmatisation. Together, they will question the assumed authority of traditional archives and reflect on how archives also function as mechanisms of power, and the ways in which they can be reclaimed for radical reimagination and resistance to disappearance.  FR - Jack Halberstam est l'une des figures académiques les plus marquantes des études de genre et queer. Il est l'auteur de plusieurs ouvrages, dont Trans*, A Quick and Quirky Account of Gender Variability, et The Queer Art of Failure. Il s'entretiendra avec Archivo de la Memoria Trans, un collectif qui se consacre à la préservation et à la mise en valeur des histoires des communautés trans par la création d'archives alternatives, un puissant contre-récit qui fait face à l'invisibilité et à la stigmatisation. Iels remettront en question l'autorité des archives traditionnelles et s’engageront dans une réflexion sur la façon dont les archives peuvent fonctionner comme des mécanismes de pouvoir, et comment on peut les revendiquer pour une réinvention radicale et une lutte contre la disparition.     Ònfalo concert-conference – Fireflies Conversations (EN)

    EN - Musicians Enrico Malatesta and Attila Faravelli, together with researcher Juan José López Díez, delve into the way insects communicate with each other by making leaves vibrate. They accompany groups on walks through green spaces in the city and use laser vibrometers to record these barely perceptible sounds. Halfway between a conference and a concert, they present a montage of sound recordings and scientific insights, a surprising form inviting the audience to enter the invisible life surrounding us. FR - Les musiciens Enrico Malatesta et Attila Faravelli, et le chercheur Juan José López Díez, étudient la manière dont les insectes communiquent entre eux en faisant vibrer les feuilles. Ils accompagnent des groupes lors de promenades dans des espaces verts de la ville et utilisent des vibromètres laser pour enregistrer ces sons à peine perceptibles. À mi-chemin entre une conférence et un concert, cette Fireflies Conversation combine des enregistrements sonores et le partage de connaissances scientifiques, une forme surprenante qui invite le public à découvrir la vie invisible qui nous entoure. NL - Muzikanten Enrico Malatesta en Attila Faravelli verdiepen zich samen met onderzoeker Juan José López Díez in de manier waarop insecten met elkaar communiceren door bladeren te laten trillen. Ze begeleiden groepen op wandelingen door groene ruimtes in de stad en registreren met laservibrometers deze nauwelijks waarneembare geluiden. Halfweg tussen lezing en concert presenteren ze een montage van geluidsopnames en wetenschappelijke inzichten, een verrassende vorm die het publiek uitnodigt om kennis te maken met het onzichtbare leven om ons heen.     FR - Elias Sanbar (°1947, Haïfa) est l’un des écrivains et historiens arabes contemporains les plus éminents, traducteur de l'œuvre de Mahmoud Darwich et ambassadeur de la Palestine auprès de l'UNESCO. Il a fondé la Revue d'études palestiniennes, l'une des publications les plus respectées sur la Palestine. Avec sa fille et l'actrice Mayya Sanbar, il propose une lecture de poèmes et une discussion sur la poésie et la situation en Palestine.  NL - Elias Sanbar (°1947, Haifa) is één van de belangrijkste hedendaagse Arabische schrijvers en historici, vertaler van het werk van Mahmoud Darwish en ook ambassadeur van Palestina bij UNESCO. Hij was medeoprichter en hoofdredacteur van de Revue d'études palestiniennes, één van de meest gerespecteerde publicaties over Palestina. Samen met actrice Mayya Sanbar, zijn dochter, zal hij een reeks gedichten voordragen en in gesprek gaan over poëzie en de situatie in Palestina.  EN - Elias Sanbar (°1947, Haifa) is one of the most distinguished contemporary Arab writers and historians, translator of the work of Mahmoud Darwish and also the Palestinian ambassador to UNESCO. He was co-founder and editor-in-chief of the Revue d'études palestiniennes, one of the most respected publications about Palestine.     EN – For the 2024 edition of the Free School programme, Kunstenfestivaldesarts invited artists, thinkers and activists to question the space of the kitchen table as a place for sharing food, a place where stories converge, but also a culmination of a history of domestic labour that is often invisible. This podcast, recorded during these talks and workshops, looks at the struggles of migrant domestic workers, the tools and strategies of resistance and joy as a political weapon. In this first episode, Silvia Federici and Territorio Doméstico tell us about the struggle of migrant domestic workers as part of "A life worth living: a workshop on struggle, care and joy", a four-day workshop organised by artist Anna Rispoli. NL – Voor de 2024 editie van de Free School nodigde Kunstenfestivaldesarts kunstenaars, denkers en activisten uit om de ruimte van de keukentafel te bevragen. Als een plek waar we samen eten, de plek waar verhalen samenkomen, maar ook een culminatiepunt van onzichtbare huishoudelijke arbeid.     FR – Lors de l’édition 2024 de son programme Free School, Kunstenfestivaldesarts a invité des artistes, penseur·ses et activistes à questionner l’espace de la table de la cuisine en tant que lieu de partage de la nourriture, un lieu où convergent les récits, mais aussi un point culminant de l’activité domestique, souvent invisible. Un micro posé au cœur de ces rencontres relate de la lutte de travailleuses domestiques issues de la migration, des outils et stratégies de résistance ou encore de la joie comme arme politique.
