Born in Grand Rapids, Michigan, he pursued undergraduate studies at the University of Michigan before earning his Doctor of Naturopathic Medicine degree from the National College of Naturopathic Medicine (NCNM) in Portland, Oregon, where he attended on a Hahnemann Scholarship. From 1980 to 1984, he directed the homeopathy program at NCNM and also served on the faculty at Bastyr University. Throughout his career, Dr. Murphy taught homeopathy, Oriental medicine, Tai Chi, and Qigong, helping educate practitioners and students around the world. Dr. Murphy is best known for authoring several influential reference works in homeopathy, including the Homeopathic Medical Repertory (later expanded as Murphy's MetaRepertory), Lotus Materia Medica (now published as Nature's Materia Medica), and Keynote Materia Medica. These texts are widely used by homeopathic practitioners and educational institutions internationally. He founded and directed the Lotus Health Institute, where he continued to teach and publish educational materials on homeopathy and natural medicine. Dr. Murphy passed away on November 17, 2021, leaving a lasting legacy as one of the most widely recognized educators and authors in contemporary homeopathic literature.
