Things We Got Wrong

Everyone makes mistakes. We're human. But the biggest mistake to make is not learning from things you got wrong. After over 600 episodes of The Brain Candy Podcast, Sarah Rice and Susie Meister realized their freewheeling, casual conversations didn't always get everything exactly right. And as they evolved and grew over the years and science developed, they changed their minds about a lot of things. So it's Things We Got Wrong to the rescue! This podcast is a celebration of humility, evolution, and growth, and says it's ok to make mistakes and change your mind. It's time to move forward by looking back! TDM-RESERVATION: 1. NOAI: TRUE. 90s Nostalgia, Y2K, & Low Fat Diets

We're getting nostalgic for the 80s and 90s today! We're looking back and seeing what we got wrong about the final decades of the millennium. Were parachute pants horrible or awesome? The Rachel haircut--is it timeless or was it a fashion no? We discuss the early days of reality tv that Susie misses. We hear why Kato Kaelin still has habits he created to copy with his role in the "trial of the century." We talk about a failed world record attempt involving balloons and Susie explains why Y2K's computer scare was probably not an overreaction despite the lack of world-ending events that happened on that fateful New Year's Eve. We debate whether Pee Wee Herman got a bad deal, why Oprah may have outstayed her welcome in the cultural milieu, and we do not miss the 90s waif-ish model craze. And even thought we think the low fat diet trend was ridiculous, those Snackwell's cookies were delish. Abortion, Roe v Wade, & IVF

The theme of episode 64 of Brain Candy Podcast was abortion, and we had Jessica Semler on as our expert guest as she worked for Planned Parenthood. Today we revisited that conversation and invited Jessica back to discuss anything we got wrong 8 years ago. One thing Jessica did not get wrong is all the ways the Presidential election of 2016 would impact reproductive rights, women's rights, and our lives. We talk about the overturning of Roe v Wade, the implications on IVF and other fertility treatments, and the importance of sharing abortion stories and women's health experiences with each other. Weaves, Wes, and Washing Jeans

Today we're discussing Brain Candy episodes 61 and 62, which covered hair and a mid-season discussion of Rivals 3. First Sarah shares what she got wrong about weaves and her regrets about encouraging Devyn to wear her natural hair for the final because the weave would be an encumbrance to their victory. We discuss the stigma of hair plugs for men and Susie makes the argument that a lot of cosmetic procedures would fall under the category of "gender-affirming care." We hear why Sarah felt she "lost herself" in her marriage, and why she approaches relationships differently now. We learn the science behind washing your jeans and whether it is safe to wear them without washing them for long periods. Striptease, Vaginal Rejuvenation, & Ping Pong Patriarchy

Sarah is all up in her feelings in this episode because she has some regrets about a past Brain Candy episode about vaginas. She explains why her words in the episode didn't match her actual feelings and why things are different now. We revisit the discussion on the Thai ping-pong shows and why Sarah would never go to one now. We hear why Sarah used to have "low vagina confidence," and how she feels now. Susie describes an epiphany she had with her husband and why she was an accidental bully. We discuss a BCP where we discussed the Challenge, the way Sarah's feelings about some of her castmates have changed over time, and why our life before the show feels like a different person than we are now. We share how we blame the Challenge for why the early episodes of Brain Candy are so cringe-worthy. And we learn how much Sarah felt like she had to win on Rivals 2 in order for her to get a car. Bootleg Bananas and a Bag of Dicks

After an amusing Amazon anecdote, Susie is off to the races defending herself against an accusation and a 1-star review. We discuss episode 45 of Brain Candy wherein we psychoanalyze Johnny, and ask ourselves whether it's ethical to psychoanalyze psychos. Susie says yes, and we think she convinced Sarah, so we're in the clear. We listen back on the traits of a narcissist and realize we definitely didn't get our diagnosis wrong. We also reflect on BCP episode 46 on the male private part, and Susie is disturbed at her candor and oversharing and at the immature and outrageous tone we took all those years ago. But the bright spot that brings us great joy was listening to the original bag of d*cks conversation and we reveal whether our mental images have changed since then. It's a delight. This is Your Brain on Drugs & Marriage

We cover Brain Candy episodes 40 and 41 today, which includes discussions on mental health, drugs, and marriage. We start with a reflection on mental health and why there is a "stigma" sometimes about mental health, and the ways our brains can sabotage us. We learn which addictions are the most corrosive to our brains and we express our frustration about the limits on what we know about CTE and other injuries. Episode 41 featured Sarah's then husband, and she reveals what it was like listening back to that episode. We discuss an outburst he discussed and Susie shares why part of her understood his explosive reaction to Sarah's admonition about his sugary diet. Sarah describes their dynamic, and how the episode validated her choices and evolution over time. We also consider whether our first marriages were something "we got wrong," and whether that is inherently true if there is a divorce. Sociopath Susie, Challenge Food, & Sarah's Pee Pants

Today we look back at more behind-the-scenes Challenge episodes and how so much of what we shared is now common knowledge. We discuss how the meals on the Challenge can be triggering, sporadic, and less than delicious. We talk about a cold call we did with Wes where he explained why he and Susie never got along, and his answer was extremely offensive. We explain why we think his answer is indicative of the expectations placed on women of the show, and you're characterized as crazy, difficult, or acceptable (but acceptable just means submissive). We revisit a discussion on BDSM and Susie says there is more to the story about the overlap between sadomasichism and domestic violence, and how it's not as clear cut as the community likes to claim/believe (see: Armie Hammer). We reminisce about Sarah's love for Jeff Goldblum and why he awakened her sexual identity, and we hear about the time she wanted to impress a boy and then ended up having her most embarrassing moment instead. Friends Forever, Big Boobs, & Sarah's White Whale

We're covering Brain Candy episodes on DIY hacks, friendship, and boobs. We hear why Sarah is still a DIY-ing fool and can't stop taking on these big tasks even when they don't save her time or money. Susie revisits a lost friendship and gives a surprising update about the state of that friendship today. In fact, there is an update on the story that happened as we recorded the episode in real time. Sarah apologizes for something she did during one of the episodes when Susie was trying to be vulnerable. We discuss how we sound so much lighter and more fun in the old episodes than we do now, and we try to figure out why that is the case. We talk about breast implants, beauty, vanity, and why we're clumsy during our periods.
