    an advice column, but make it a podcast

    i've decided i'm starting an advice column on substack, because i want to create more community in a really positive way. i'm hoping to build a little corner of substack where the girls are actually supporting each other and lifting each other up when things are hard, instead of just scrolling past it. before i launch it there, i wanted to test it out here first with some real questions from you guys. so in this episode i'm answering things like what you actually do when a guy you've been talking to long distance, someone you have genuinely never met in person, tells you he wants to fly into your town. exciting, or a red flag with a nice haircut. i also get into the one i get asked constantly, which is whether davide and i actually sit down and have dinner together every single night, and what that really looks like versus what people assume from the outside. and then the one that actually made me sit with it for a minute, which is how do you stay open to the world, genuinely open, soft, still willing to hope, when it so often feels like a tragic place. i don't have a neat answer for that one, but i gave a real one. consider this the pilot episode of the column. if it goes well, you're all getting a lot more of my unsolicited opinions very soon.     This Oak House, and the Woman Behind It: Annie Meyers-Shyer

    This week I sat down with Annie Meyers-Shyer, the woman behind This Oak House, the Instagram account documenting her family's historic home renovation in Los Angeles that has completely taken over my algorithm and my heart. Annie grew up surrounded by design and storytelling as the daughter of Nancy Meyers, known for movies such as Something's Gotta Give and The Holiday, and her father, Charles Shyer, who worked alongside Nancy as a writer and director on many of those same films. But her own path took a different shape entirely, from working as an accessories editor at Harper's Bazaar in New York to a five year run as West Coast PR for Chanel, before eventually landing back in Los Angeles as a wife, mother, and, as she puts it herself, "the absolute accidental influencer."
