Yo-Yo Ma - 53 years of friendship and duets

Live from Tanglewood, cellist Yo-Yo Ma chats with Manny about their long musical relationship and friendship. The two treat the live audience to a few musical performances, and they take questions from the audience about their burning musical questions, like “why does a piano have three pedals?” Our theme song is Schumann’s Arabeske in C Major, Op. 18 performed by our host, Emanuel Ax. Marc-André Hamelin - Rocks Rachmaninoff

Composer and pianist Marc-André Hamelin joins Manny to talk about growing up with a musical father, the mechanics of piano playing, and the influences behind his prolific performing and recording career. He answers listener questions about piano transcriptions and why music is written in so many different keys. In the music segment, Hamelin performs one of his favorite works by Rachmaninoff live in the studio. Live From Atlanta: GA Politics, a Growing Gender Gap and Scenes From Spelhouse Homecoming's Tailgate

With the 2024 presidential election right around the corner, all eyes are on the swing states. In this episode, host Kai Wright travels to Atlanta, the heart of one swing state where early voting numbers are at a record high, to hear about the historically large political gender gap. While the show was in town, Atlanta hosted homecoming festivities for Morehouse and Spelman Colleges, two of the nation’s most famous historically Black schools — and the perfect campuses to talk politics with students and alumni in between the parties. Kai is joined by Omar Ali, a local Atlanta business owner and political organizer; Rose Scott, host of the daily news magazine Closer Look on WABE, Atlanta Public Radio; and Errin Haines, co-founder and editor-at-large of The 19th, a newsroom that covers the intersections of gender, politics and policy. The Origin Story of Black History Month

We’ve got complicated relationships with this annual celebration -- from joy to frustration. So to launch our Future of Black History series, we ask how it began and what it can be.
