PSYCH me up!

Carmen Daniel, MPH

Let's normalize healing our brain! Our brain is the powerhouse behind what motivates us & how we behave & interact with the world. When it comes to taking care of our brain we often leave its care to our own devices. Stigma has certainly decreased, specifically among BIPOC communities, but there's more we can do. My true passion lies in the science of behavior change. Through this lens, I invite you to follow my intimate journey in continuous self-discovery, but not alone. I'll bring along public health colleagues, friends and experts in the field. It's our time: PSYCH me up!

Psychiatry and mental wellness - More than a prescription

We round out this component of the podcast in diving into the science of mental health with psychiatrist, Dr. JK Hairston. The more you know, the more you grow. In this episode we dive into the inner workings of what psychiatry really looks like. Coming into this conversation I gave the nod that psychiatrists simply prescribe medicine that's used as a part of treatment - not to say I was wrong - but I wasn't right. In order to destigmatize this space, we can't sugar coat any of its parts. We talk about our medicines and treatments for chronic diseases such as high blood pressure and high cholesterol - and many have no fear, shame or guilt in asking for refills. But what does it look like in taking care of our mental health? In this episode with Dr. Hairston we dive into what it means to truly show empathy towards yourself and the work it takes to be your best self. Prescribing medicine to deal with chronic/acute mental health disorders works alongside a care plan and with any care plan - compliance and patience is necessary. Dr. Hairston shares her experiences as BIPOC psychiatrist, mother, practitioner, and mental health advocate. Dr. Hairston is available to connect on many platforms. Behavioral Science and Mental Health w/ Cintia Hinojosa

I'm so excited to share this episode with each of you. Cintia and I met purely through universal alignment. As a first generation PhD student Cintia explores what her mental wellness journey has looked like for her and how she has and continues to navigate this space. She shares experiences from her personal life that have impacted and informed her research interests and fueled her passions. Cintia poses the question: "Are you ok in your head?" and the conversation truly grew from there. In this episode we dive into the science of mental health through a behavioral science lens as Cintia - the future Dr. Hinojosa - shares excerpts from her work in BIPOC communities coupled with vulnerable moments in this journey, specifically as a first generation Mexican American. Cintia hits home with what "Psych's her up"! You'll have to listen to find out. Please be sure to check out Cintia's work via social links below and as always, if something was said that sparked your interest or helped you in anyway, feel free to reach out and give the flowers now.
