  • Canada's controversial resettlement programme

    19 Aug

    Canada's controversial resettlement programme

In 1954, a massive government-run resettlement programme began in Canada. This saw the relocation of nearly 30,000 people from isolated ‘outport’ fishing communities in Newfoundland and Labrador to designated ‘growth centres', intended to provide better education and facilities. In some cases this involved physically moving houses with ropes and pullies, then floating them to new locations. Catherine Harvey speaks to Don White, who recalls being resettled from Port Nelson where he grew up, and how this affected him and his family. A Roguegunners production. Eye-witness accounts brought to life by archive. Witness History is for those fascinated by and curious about the past. We take you to the events that have shaped our world through the eyes of the people who were there. For nine minutes every day, we take you back in time and all over the world, to examine wars, coups, scientific discoveries, cultural moments and much more. Recent episodes explore everything from how the Excel spreadsheet was developed, the creation of cartoon rabbit Miffy and how the sound barrier was broken. We look at the lives of some of the most famous leaders, artists, scientists and personalities in history, including: the moment Reagan and Gorbachev met in Geneva, Haitian singer Emerante de Pradines’ life and Omar Sharif’s legendary movie entrance in Lawrence of Arabia. You can learn all about fascinating and surprising stories, like the invention of a stent which has saved lives around the world; the birth of the G7; and the meeting of Maldives’ ministers underwater. We cover everything from World War Two and Cold War stories to Black History Month and our journeys into space. (Photo: A house waiting for the tide to bring it ashore. FRANK WARREN: How a Kid from a Council Estate Became Boxing’s Biggest Promoter

Frank Warren is one of the biggest names in British boxing, having promoted some of the greatest fighters the sport has ever seen.  I'm a huge boxing fan, so sitting down with Frank was a dream come true. And his life is like a Guy Ritchie movie…  Frank grew up on a council estate in North London, left school at 14 and fell into boxing promotion almost by accident. He went on to build an incredible career, only to be shot and nearly killed at the height of his success.  From surviving that to promoting some of the biggest nights in boxing, Frank has seen it all.  In this conversation, Frank shares:  The moment he was shot and nearly killed in 1989 Why signing Ricky Hatton was one of his proudest achievements His thoughts on how ‘influencer-boxing’ is changing the sport What happened when he got punched by Mike Tyson  Frank is a reminder that resilience isn't about avoiding setbacks - it's about what you build after them. Love Stories: Our own romcom

Karan and Roshan’s real-life romance inspired their film A Nice Indian Boy, and the success of the Hollywood/Bollywood romcom has healed many family rifts on the way. Karan Soni is an Indian actor famous for playing supporting roles in films like Deadpool & Wolverine. He had moved to the US for college before becoming an actor, but, despite coming out in his teens, felt he had to keep his sexuality a secret to make it in Hollywood. Roshan Sethi is a Canadian oncologist and scriptwriter from an Indian family, who didn't come out till the age of 30. But when the pair met through an online dating app, things began to change. They ended up making a Hollywood/Bollywood-inspired romcom that closely resembled their own story – about a gay Indian-American doctor finding love. Karan is in the lead role, alongside musical theatre star Jonathan Groff, and Roshan is directing. Making this film, and sharing it with their families, has helped to address some of the issues both Karan and Roshan experienced as gay men from South Asian communities. This story was first on BBC World Service radio last year - when the Lives Less Ordinary team decided to create the Love Stories season, we knew we had to include it! Presenter: Sophia Smith Galer Producer: Helen Fitzhenry Lives Less Ordinary is a podcast from the BBC World Service that brings you the most incredible true stories from around the world.
