Patricia Cornwell on Her Dark Childhood and Best-Selling Novels

“Angel Down,” a grisly novel about World War I told in a single, almost 300-page-long sentence, was awarded this year’s Pulitzer Prize for fiction. In a review for The New York Times, Ben H. Winters described it as a “thunderous gallop” that captures the “cruel and self-perpetuating logic of war.” (It was also one of the Book Review’s Top 10 books of 2025.) The day after the Pulitzers were awarded, the book’s author, Daniel Kraus — who has written horror, fantasy and young adult novels — spoke to the Book Review’s editor, Gilbert Cruz, about putting together his semi-experimental story. Cruz also spoke with Patricia Cornwell, a best-selling author who rose to prominence in the 1990s with novels about the character Kay Scarpetta, a chief medical examiner. A Scarpetta series starring Nicole Kidman debuted this year on Amazon. Cornwell has released a new memoir, “True Crime,” in which she tells the surprising story of her childhood and the events that led her to become a novelist. SEASON 2, EPISODE 2

    3

    The Power of Dystopian Literature

Good dystopian literature forces its readers to confront ideas of government, culture, community, and identity. This episode of the "Velshi Banned Book Club" will examine two of the most celebrated works of dystopian literature of all time: “The Giver” by Lois Lowry and “1984” by George Orwell. Both novels are staples in the American public education system, the dystopian literary canon, and they are among the most frequently challenged literary works. These books grow along with their readers – from elementary school with “The Giver” onto adulthood with “1984”. Today, perhaps more than ever, these books are necessary -- even critical -- to our collective futures. Coming to America

The story of this country is told through the eyes of immigrants. This episode of the Velshi Banned Book Club will explore two critically acclaimed additions to the American immigration literary canon: “How the García Girls Lost Their Accents” by Julia Alvarez and “American Street” by Ibi Zoboi. Both novels examine what becomes of identity, religion, family, and community when confronted with the push and pull of engrained cultural heritage, a beloved homeland, contemporary American young adulthood, and the desire to belong. Here, we will examine the realities of the so-called American dream and what it means to come-of-age between two worlds. 5

    War in Literature

Heralded as one of the most enduring and salient novels in American history, “The Things They Carried”, written by Tim O’Brien, is a fictionalized account of O’Brien’s very real time as an infantry soldier in the Vietnam War. While, at its core, it is a Vietnam War novel, “The Things They Carried” explores the futility of all war, the power of friendship, and the motivating effects of morality, isolation, shame, and survival. This episode of the Velshi Banned Book Club will feature just one book, “The Things They Carried”, and explore its massive contribution to American literature. A Legacy of Advocacy

We are starting Season 2 of the "Velshi Banned Book Club" with a very special featured book: Ali Velshi’s own “Small Acts of Courage: A Legacy of Endurance and the Fight for Democracy.” Exploring more than a century of his family's history, the book illustrates Ali’s worldview, including his dedication to public service and his unwavering belief in social justice. While it hasn't been banned, understanding Ali’s life story adds context and color to the "Velshi Banned Book Club" as a whole. His story makes clear why it is so critical to him to share each of these stories. This episode will also introduce Hannah Holland, literary editor for the "Velshi Banned Book Club," who will have a contributing role in the series overall and interview Ali in this episode. #246. Story Mapping: How to Map Your Novel With Sticky Notes (With Danyel Nicole)

What if getting stuck on your novel has nothing to do with your story and everything to do with HOW you're seeing it? Story mapping coach Danyel Nicole found that out firsthand. When Danyel's first draft started to feel off, she got up from her desk one night, grabbed butcher paper and sticky notes, and mapped out her entire story on the wall in her hallway. Within an hour, she could finally see what was working—and what wasn't. This discovery changed everything about her novel-writing process. And now she helps other writers do the same. Danyel is a Notes to Novel graduate and founder of Map Your Story Studios, where she helps fiction writers get their stories off the page and onto the wall so they can see the big picture, break through draft paralysis, and write with real momentum. In this episode, she's breaking down exactly how story mapping works, why it gets writers unstuck, and how you can start today with less than $25 worth of supplies. What You'll Learn:  [03:00] What story mapping is, and why getting stuck on your novel is almost always a visibility problem, not a story problem. [06:29] What Danyel's wall literally looks like: the color-coded sticky note system she uses to map every act, scene, conflict, and character arc at a glance. [00:09:24] Exactly what to buy at Target (for $25 or less) to start mapping your story today—plus digital tool options if you'd rather work on a screen. [14:45] What Danyel found on her wall that saved her from writing a whole section of her draft that would have fallen completely flat. [17:18] The three sticky notes that give any writer, at any stage, a solid story foundation to start mapping their novel today. Whether you're staring at a blank page with no idea where to start, three chapters in and losing the throughline, or three hundred pages deep into a draft that keeps going in circles, story mapping meets you exactly where you are. 🔗 Links mentioned in this episode: Danyel Nicole's Website | Map Your Story StudiosDanyel Nicole's Freebie | Map Your Story GuideDanyel Nicole's Instagram Take Author Success QuizLearn More About Notes To Novel⭐ Follow & Review If you loved this episode, please take a moment to follow the show and leave a review on Apple Podcasts!
