How Algorithms Manipulate What We See — And Who Really Controls the Truth

Tara sits down with Imran Ahmed, founder of the Center for Countering Digital Hate, for a live panel at South by Southwest on who owns the truth in an algorithmic world. They discuss how algorithms have become outrage machines, why independent journalism is both empowered and threatened by platforms, and how bad actors — from neo-Nazis to algorithm candidates — have weaponized social media. Imran reveals how Mark Zuckerberg dialed down Facebook's negativity algorithm on January 6th and turned it back up the next day, why TikTok serves self-harm content to 13-year-old girls within minutes, and why he believes we may be witnessing the slow erosion of democracy itself. Plus: Tara shares her journey from Jersey girl to White House correspondent to independent media entrepreneur, and what it's really like to be beholden to the algorithm. Pippa Crerar of The Guardian assesses the latest developments at Westminster. To discuss the unfolding conflict in the Middle East, and Britain's response, Pippa is joined by Labour peer, Lord West, a former First Sea Lord and Security Minister, and former Conservative MP, Tobias Ellwood, who also served as a minister in the Foreign Office and MoD. Following the vote on the government's controversial Courts and Tribunals Bill which would restrict jury trials, Pippa speaks to Dame Vera Baird KC, a former Labour minister and Victims' Commissioner who now chairs the Criminal Cases Review Commission, and Cassia Rowland, senior researcher at The Institute for Government who specialises in criminal justice. Sunder Katwala, Director of the think tank British Future, which focuses on immigration and integration, and crossbench peer Kishwer Falkner, the former chair of the Equalities and Human Rights Commission, debate the government's new strategy on social cohesion. And, following the release of government documents relating to the appointment of Peter Mandelson as US ambassador, Pippa speaks to Keir Starmer's former Director of Strategy, Paul Ovenden, and the political editor of the New Statesman, Ailbhe Rea.

    Lord Daniel Finkelstein OBE

Not content with attempting to collect all 650 sitting MPs (Current score: three) we have a new task... collecting all of the sitting peers in the House of Lords, and as of this episode we're on the board with one... the Conservative peer Lord Daniel (Danny to his friends) Finkelstein OBE. Not only have we bagged our first 'Lord' but Danny is also the first Conservative guest on the podcast. This really is an groundbreaking episode. All after we helped get an MP elected last time (polls had it as a two way fight before our interview, landslide result after it... we can't argue with that). So enjoy this House of Lords' special. What should we conquer next...? Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.

A Court of Drugs and Guns

Kate, Leah, and Melissa break down the oral arguments in United States v. Hemani, a Second Amendment case which challenges a law prohibiting “unlawful users” of controlled substances from possessing a firearm. Then, they cover two truly heinous shadow docket rulings–a case out of New York where SCOTUS’s conservatives seem to have found an impermissible racial gerrymander they believe in, and another on the outing of transgender children–before speaking with California Attorney General Rob Bonta about standing up to the Trump administration on issues like tariffs, federal law enforcement overreach, and antitrust. They also pour one out for Krispy Gnome’s (née Kristi Noem) generationally awful tenure at the Department of Homeland Security. This episode was recorded live at the Herbst Theatre in San Francisco. International law expert Rebecca Ingber of Cardozo Law joins Leah at the top of the show to talk about the US and Israel's war on Iran. Then, Leah welcomes guest co-host Chris Geidner of Law Dork to run through domestic legal news, including the omission of allegations against Trump from the Epstein files, the President’s MAHA Surgeon General nominee Casey Means’s confirmation hearing, the administration’s wildly illegal halting of Medicaid funds to Minnesota, the role of independent media in Trump 2.0, and some of the stories Chris has been breaking. They also unpack last week’s oral arguments and opinions before Leah is joined by Marc Elias, chair of Elias Law Group and founder of Democracy Docket, to discuss how voting rights are under attack from all three branches of government. Mexican cartels | TV reporters out in the cold | Denied entry to Canada | Human trafficking

Jerry opens the show explaining why he disagrees with the notion that Mexican cartels grew out of poverty.  Why do TV reporters keep being sent out into storms, only to tell us it is cold and snowy? Jerry talks to CP24 meteorologist Bill Coulter. American country music artist Charley Crockett was denied entry into Canada and scrapped his Canadian tour.  Plus, Jerry speaks with former MPP Lisa MacLeod about human trafficking in the GTA.

Is the Trump Administration's 'Donroe' Doctrine Transforming Relations with Latin America?

Following Washington's emphasis on the Western Hemisphere in its 2025 National Security Strategy, this episode examines Cuba, Venezuela and the intensifying US-China competition in Latin America. In this episode, Neil Melvin is joined by Dr Brian Fonseca, Director of the Jack D. Gordon Institute for Public Policy at Florida International University, and Dr Carlos Solar, Senior Research Fellow for Latin American Security at RUSI, to assess how the Trump administration's 'America First' strategy is reshaping security and geopolitics across the Americas, and what the shift means for regional stability and US global priorities. This discussion explores: · The elevation of the Western Hemisphere to the top tier of US national security priorities. · Cuba's re-emergence as a strategic concern, including energy pressure, migration controls and intelligence considerations. · Venezuela's uncertain transition following US intervention and the risks of proxy competition. · The expansion of bilateral security agreements and US military deployments in the Caribbean basin. · The implications of this hemispheric focus for US alliances and global commitments. · Whether Latin America is becoming an arena for US-China strategic rivalry.
