Who Watches the Watchmen? Race and Policing Through the Lens of Popular Entertainment

When HBO series Watchmen premiered in October 2019, the show—a dramatically different take on Alan Moore and Dave Gibbons’s original comic book/graphic novel—was noted for its direct confrontation of racism in America. Systemic racism, police brutality, collective trauma, and vigilante justice are all central themes to the TV remix. In light of ongoing deaths of Black Americans at the hands of police, nationwide protests, and calls for reforms, the show is now getting a second look with many calling it eerily prescient. Tune in to a conversation, originally held on June 25th, 2020, about how Watchmen and other popular entertainment can highlight and help us understand critical issues around race and policing. Citizen Ballot Initiatives: A New Tool for Election Reform

The last several years have seen the growing and successful use of citizen-initiated ballot initiatives to win major election reforms. Some of the most successful, well-funded, and engaging campaigns have had unlikely initiators: small groups of everyday Americans fed up with waiting for someone else to take on an issue and deciding to do it themselves. Building an Accountable and Effective Base of White Communities Working for Racial Justice

White Americans are directly implicated in the perpetuation of structural racism, and also have much to gain in actively working to dismantle it. Untying Knots sat down with Erin Heaney, Executive Director of Showing Up for Racial Justice (SURJ), to discuss the core principles of SURJ’s organizing approach and to learn about how the national organization is working in predominantly white communities to advance racial and economic justice. Erin dives into key issue areas which serve as catalysts for building their organizing base, including healthcare and reproductive rights, rental and housing rights, and access to high-quality public education. Across the United States SURJ is working to direct white people away from far-right ideology, and work in service to Black-led movements for justice. At the grassroots level, they are laying the foundation for a larger and more accountable base of white Americans advocating for social change. Climate and Economic Justice: Learning from Asian Pacific Islander Community Organizers on the Frontlines

Since 1973, Asian Pacific Environmental Network (APEN) has brought together Asian immigrants and refugees in Oakland and Richmond, California to advance solutions on the issues that matter most to them. For APEN, community organizing is grounded in the leadership of community members, building power at multiple levels for a healthy local economy and climate justice. Christine Cordero, Co-Executive Director of APEN, joined Untying Knots to talk more about APEN’s meaningful local and state-wide work in California. The Conversation No One Wants to Have About Inequality

New ways of governing, policy, protests, and more have been introduced across the globe for centuries to try and curb inequality. So, what actually worked? According to Walter Scheidel, author of "The Great Leveler: Violence and the History of Inequality from the Stone Age to the Twenty-First Century," history reports that violence and catastrophe are the only proven effective interventions. Understanding Immigration & Refugee Rights

What rights do immigrants have? Did President Obama open the door for President Trump’s travel ban by instituting Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA)? Immigration is a contentious issue, hotly debated on both sides of the aisle. Amidst arguments, in a post-truth era, it’s hard to know what to believe about policy, laws, and immigrants' rights. Sabrineh Ardalan, Assistant Clinical Professor of Law and Assistant Director of the Harvard Immigration and Refugee Clinic, joins host Christopher Robichaud to help us all better understand the legal underpinnings of immigration. Deliberative Democracy and Urban Policy Design in Buenos Aires

In recent years, Buenos Aires City Government has set out to become a more inclusive and sustainable city, with a priority of serving the city's most vulnerable populations. The Housing Authority of the City of Buenos Aires has designed an innovative Socio-Urban Integration Plan which makes focus in the process by seeking to involve the relevant actors in the decision making of the slum upgrading intervention. There are many examples in the global experience in slum upgrading. Unlike these experiences, the particularity of the Buenos Aires City program is that it starts from the premise that the community will design and implement the plan. In practical terms, this means that instead of a top-down approach to design and implementation of the public policy, the government's action concentrates on building local capacity so that neighbors are able to engage actively in a dialogue with the government and other stakeholders to further common goals, and ultimately, have the opportunity to influence the actions that shape their lives. This process started three years ago, and today more than 120,000 households are benefiting from this program. Important results not only include the improved access to essential infrastructure, housing, social services and loans for repayments of the housing, it also shows that when mechanisms of participation are well designed, deliberative democracy can be massive, profound and effective. On Thursday, November 7th, the Ash Center hosted a discussion with Juan Ignacio Maquieyra MPP 2014, President of the Housing Authority of the City of Buenos Aires.
