Michelle Wilkinson: Reshaping Culture

In Part 1 of episode 5, Reshaping Culture, I’m talking with Michelle Wilkinson, curator of Architecture and Design at the Smithsonian National Museum of African American History and Culture in Washington, DC. She talks about why it’s essential for the museum to preserve Black Design History and why she has taken on building out this collection of work by key Black Architects and Designers. Building off preserving Architectural Design, Culture, and history in 2018, Michelle organized the museum’s three-day symposium, “Shifting the Landscape: Black Architects and Planners, 1968 to Now.” Then from 2019-2020, she was a Loeb Fellow at Harvard Graduate School of Design, which provided an opportunity to expand upon her research on preserving Black Architecture and Design. We also talk about what led her to seek out the work of Michael Puryear’s Dan chair, which is now part of the collection that Michelle is helping to build. Messages to Our Younger Selves

Christopher Nolan’s original films all have a beautiful perspective on time and specifically communication as related to the construct of time. He’s found a fascinating way to explore the subject of time travel that we’re all obsessed with in one way or another. In this episode, we time travel back to ourselves at our son’s current ages to deliver some advice to 13- and 23-year-old Kamau² and Adrian. Young Garvey is a special guest on this episode doing exactly what he should be doing at two years old… loving life, disrupting the status quo, and making the Good Trouble we know he always will. Exploring the Creative Vision of Marcia Minter

In this episode of Reshaping Culture, I am thrilled to be joined by Marcia Minter, the co-founder, and director of Indigo Arts Alliance, a remarkable non-profit organization located in Portland. Together with her husband, artist Daniel Minter, they established Indigo Arts Alliance to provide a platform for artists of color to connect, create, and exhibit their work. Prior to starting Indigo, Marcia held the position of VP of Creative Director at LL Bean for 16 years. She also serves as a Trustee of the Portland Museum of Art and Haystack Mountain School of Crafts, and is a respected member of the Maine Arts Commission. During this episode, Marcia delves into what it took to plan last summer’s 2022 ReUnion Retreat at Haystack Artists Residency and then gives us a sneak peek into Indigo's big plans for this Spring and Summer season. The Murder of a Father in Progress

The brutal murder of George Floyd moved a nation in depressive denial of its racist soul. It moved those beyond our borders who could relate to the abject inhumanity we witnessed in that act. It also moved your hosts of The Stages in significant ways… to tears, to rage, to action, to education, to reflection, to protection and to conversation. This ‘Time Capsule’ episode was our first live dialogue about the murder of George Floyd, five days after his life was taken. We’ve held it for almost a year, which is how long it took for the legal pursuit of justice to begin. (Recorded May 30, 2020)

The Extended Family at The Barbershop

The value and comfort of community have reached new heights in the Black American psyche with the dueling pandemics (COVID and White Nationalism/Racism) we faced in 2020. A reflection on this was the lead-in to our reflection on safe havens in the Black community, and specifically The Barbershop which has often been referred to as the "Black Man's Country Club." O'Shea Jackson' Sr. (a.k.a. Ice Cube) has celebrated the Barbershop and its role in the black community, our lines and our son's lives. This inspired Kamau² and Adrian to ponder why Cube did not leverage that sacred space in the community before leaning into dialogue with a Presidential cabinet who does not have this community's best interest at heart. Our Fathers and Our Fatherhood

There are so many influences that effect the way that parents parent - from the way we are raised to the real and fictional families we observe growing up. There is no greater influence, however, than our own familial situations and in this episode Kamau² and Adrian discuss the role their fathers played in their lives, how their Fathers influence their journeys through fatherhood, what Father's Day means in the Black community and what Father's Day has meant to them since stepping into that all-important role. Hopes and Fears For Our Sons

Every parent - for every moment of parenthood - has their own set of hopes and fears for their children. It is innate and inherent in our role as parents. Those hopes and fears are heightened exponentially when you know where the monsters are and what the monsters look like. As Black women, Black men, Black boys and girls lives have been taken mindlessly and senselessly, Kamau² and Adrian discuss the state of the world, the state of racism, the state of assault on "other" and how that all impacts the way they father, the way they dream and the way they protect their sons.

Kinfolk Energy: Giving A Little Piece Of Yourself

These weren't just survival tactics; they were profound expressions of community care that continue to influence how we build our worlds today.Creating kinfolk energy requires both openness and boundaries. Not everyone deserves access to your sacred spaces, and learning this distinction is part of maturing as a community builder. We share practical wisdom about finding your different "tribes," being intentionally hospitable, and bringing your authentic self wherever you go. From the simple act of providing clean socks for guests in our shoeless home to hosting regular gatherings that feel effortless after decades of practice, we reveal how attention to detail communicates care in powerful ways.As we navigate increasingly disconnected times, rekindling kinfolk energy might be our most radical act.
