The power of the pause

This episode of “Words For The People” begins with Kentucky Poet Laureate Crystal Wilkinson and guest author Hannah Drake sharing a powerful conversation about their journeys with resilience. They discuss the perpetuation of the “strong Black woman” stereotype that has included the burden of taking care of families, working for social justice in communities, and laboring to fix a broken country. This has come at a cost. “We’re tired of being resilient all the time,” explains Hannah as she speaks to the necessity of taking care of oneself and not just others. For the sake of health and sanity, we all need to learn to sit with silence, although it may be uncomfortable. In fact, there is no growth, healing, or truth telling without this space to listen. They share the simple advice, “go lay down.” And they shout The Nap Ministry, which declares “rest is resistance.” Crystal and Hannah also encourage listeners to actively create a space that renews you, be it a garden, a prayer room, or just a place to take off your cape for a while. In these acts of radical self-care, they find that endurance and liberation are possible. Hannah also shares her extraordinary poem, “Fix It Black Girl,” and explains why she speaks and writes about this topic. “I really want black women to be free.” Hannah is an artist with the Unknown Project, and you can read more of her writing at hannahldrake.com. Crystal then considers what a resilient life looks like with emerging Affrilachian poet Danni Quintos. Danni admits she processes a lot through her writing, although it may not go out into the world. “If it’s something that helps you heal, then it’s doing its job,” Danni reminds us. When it comes to the constant hustle writers face to publish, she believes we must give ourselves “the grace to not be productive.” Danni, who met Crystal almost 20 years ago through the Governor’s School for the Arts, also speaks of the restorative nature of her literary community and the Kentucky writers of color who encouraged her to write about the things she came from. Angela Singla | 'If she can do this, I can do this too'

When Dr. Angela Singla was a little girl, she got sick during a trip to India. While hospitalized there, she had an eye-opening experience. "I saw a female physician come in," she says. "And I was just blown away, because I had never seen a female physician before." It started her on a path that eventually led her to become an OB-GYN. On this episode, Dr. Singla sits down with Nima Kulkarni to talk about reproductive health care, political engagement among Indian Americans, and why she walked away from her medical career to focus on community service.

Event will encourage Black Louisvillians to rest and recharge

This weekend, the nonprofit organization Change Today Change Tomorrow wraps up Black History Month with an event called “Black Recharge: Rest and Relaxation.” It’s designed to be a day of rest, with yoga, journaling and other self-care practices. Isaiah Scott, one of the event’s organizers, spoke with LPM's Michelle Tyrene Johnson about the need for Black people to feed their spirits and relax their minds during stressful times, and how he hopes this event will help.

Pleasure in Partnership

When you were young, who showed you what pleasure could look like? For Kendrick Jones, it was his parents — his dad had an after-work ritual he followed every day, and his mom spent Sunday mornings dancing to gospel and cleaning house. But he also had a more unusual role model: a drag performer named Li’l Ronnie. “He was one of my mom's closest friends. When he was not performing, be the cleanest fella in the room. Girls is flocking all to him, he’s just floating like he's walking on the cloud,” Kendrick says. When Kendrick was six or seven, he saw Li’l Ronnie in drag for the first time. “He's still floating right through the room, and women and men are still flocking to him! He just floats through this world no matter what he looks like, where he's at, Li’l Ronnie is Li’l Ronnie.” Kenrick and his wife, Amber Burns-Jones, join Nubia Bennett on this episode to explore the pleasure in partnership and family. They talk about how holding space for pleasure makes them more successful parents to their two sets of twins (you read that right: two sets of twins). Pleasure in Transitions

Artists create. It’s just something we need to do, for ourselves, like eating and sleeping. And most people would say it’s lucky if we can figure out how to pay the bills with it. But doing art as your business can change your relationship with it. Robin G is a poet who also teaches poetry workshops and founded The Stanza Collective, an apparel company with affirming poetry on the designs. “At first I struggled with, okay, I don't want this to be a business because now I can't find pleasure in this anymore,” she says. “I have to produce, produce, produce. And it kind of took away that pleasure of just writing.” Robin talks with host Nubia Bennett about how she rediscovered and reclaimed the pleasure in words and writing. “I had to allow myself to know that I deserve to just write for me … it’s been a hell of a transition.” Listen in and get ready for a little Sprinkle Sparkle!
