Redefining Masculinity: Andrew Scheim on Trauma, the Body and Letting Go of the Armor

Many of us were taught that strength means hiding what's underneath. This episode asks what that armor has quietly been costing us. Bodyworker and trauma specialist Andrew Scheim joins the show to talk about toxic masculinity, why labels can be dangerous, and how the body itself holds the key to releasing old, inherited patterns. About the Guest:Andrew Scheim is a bodyworker who has spent decades doing deep trauma work with people who are chronically ill. He was a professional musician before moving into holistic medicine, and now works with clients using body-based listening, nervous system regulation and vibration therapy. Key Takeaways:Labels can trigger defensiveness fast; try listening to the energy behind a reaction, not just the wordsThe body stores what the mind won't process; nervous system tools like vibration or bouncing can help release itAsk what the "positive intent" behind dramatic behavior might be before reactingVulnerability isn't about being unguarded with everyone; choose who earns your trustShadow work means pulling up the programs running underneath you that you don't know are thereReal strength isn't about never needing anyone; it's about knowing when to let someone in Connect With the Guest:Andrew's YouTube channel and practitioner site are both under the handle Bluez The Water, where he also offers a free one-hour wellness strategy session. Redefining Masculinity: Liz Coleman on Vulnerability, Strength and Letting Go of the Armor

We're taught strength means staying silent and carrying it alone. This episode asks what that costs us. About the Guest:Liz Coleman is a Life Coach in New York State who helps people close the gap between who they think they should be and who they actually are, using nervous system tools and a method she calls mind shifting. Key Takeaways:Reset your nervous system before reacting: breathe, step away, or run through the five sensesUse small gratitude moments to shift out of anger, jealousy or resentmentName the fear under your resistance to vulnerability; it usually is not what you thinkLet anger be the release valve, not the whole story, when other emotions feel unsafeTrace inherited beliefs about strength back to where you actually picked them upStay diplomatic but firm when the people around you resist your change Connect With the Guest:Website: lizcolemanlifecoach.com Instagram: @reallizcoleman Episode Chapters:[00:00] (approx) The Version of Strength We Were Sold: opening reflection on silence and the hidden cost of toughing it out [03:00] (approx) Where This Idea Comes From: unpacking inherited survival programming and its modern price [08:00] (approx) The First Shift Toward Alignment: recognizing disconnection and choosing values over approval [14:00] (approx) A Nervous System Reset, Step by Step: Liz's tools for pausing before reacting [19:00] (approx) Living at a Higher Frequency: using small gratitude to soften heavy moments [24:00] (approx) What Vulnerability Actually Threatens: identity, fear of rejection, and staying open anyway [29:00] (approx) Rewriting Strength: Liz's closing definition and one line to carry forward 🎙️ Want to Be a Guest on Healthy Mind, Healthy Life? The Strongest Man Doesn’t Have to Pretend He Feels Nothing | Ali Christos

Many men learn that strength means providing, performing, solving problems and keeping everything together. But what if some of what looks like strength is actually armor? In this episode of Mind Over Masculinity, Swati speaks with Ali Christos about vulnerability, emotional honesty and the everyday ways people perform strength when they are afraid of being seen. Ali challenges the idea that masculinity and vulnerability belong on opposite sides. For him, vulnerability is not about having no boundaries or sharing everything with everyone. It is about being able to acknowledge what affects you while remaining present enough to choose how you respond. The conversation explores how fear can disguise itself as control, anger, perfectionism, people-pleasing, emotional distance or refusing help. The very strategies designed to protect us from rejection or hurt can sometimes prevent the connection we're actually looking for. Ali brings the conversation into everyday life: saying “I'm good” when you're not, staying busy because stillness feels uncomfortable, refusing help, working beyond exhaustion or immediately trying to fix someone's feelings instead of listening. His invitation isn't to transform overnight. It is to recognize the moment the armor goes up and make one small, more honest choice. About Ali Christos:Ali Christos is a quantum hypnosis practitioner, author, speaker, coach and founder of the Conscious Practitioner Network. His current work explores consciousness, subconscious patterns, self-awareness and personal transformation. His official site identifies him as a QHHT and BQH practitioner offering in-person and remote work, while the Conscious Practitioner Network focuses on mentorship and community for practitioners. Key Takeaways:Vulnerability doesn't automatically mean weakness.Healthy vulnerability still requires discernment and boundaries.Fear can appear as anger, control, perfectionism, emotional distance or refusing help.Protection strategies can sometimes make genuine connection harder.Saying “I'm fine” when you're struggling can be one small example of performing strength.Constantly trying to fix someone's problem can replace the emotional presence they actually need.Asking for help doesn't have to diminish independence or strength.Self-awareness creates a choice between automatically protecting yourself and moving toward connection.Redefining strength can begin with one honest moment, not a dramatic transformation.Falling into an old pattern doesn't erase the progress already made. The goal isn't necessarily to destroy your armor. It's to recognize when you're wearing it, why you're wearing it and when it is safe to take it off. Jerry Levin on Redefining Emotional Strength and Vulnerability in Men

Most men learn early that real strength means staying quiet and holding it together. In this episode of Mind Over Masculinity, host Niharika talks with author Jerry Levin about why suppressing emotions doesn't make men stronger, it makes them heavier. Jerry explains how the stories we tell ourselves about masculinity were built to keep us safe, and why feeling emotions, even privately, builds real strength. If you've felt pressure to perform toughness instead of living it, this offers an honest way forward. About the Guest:Jerry Levin is an author writing a book about the stories we tell ourselves to feel safe. He writes and speaks about masculinity, emotional expression, and identity, drawing from his own experience. Key Takeaways:Suppressing feelings doesn't make you weaker, it makes them heavier.Give yourself private space to actually feel and release emotions. Most emotional habits started as childhood messages about what's okay.If someone is upset with you, it may be about them.Real growth always requires discomfort, there's no comfortable shortcut.A supportive audience helps, but you are your most important one. What If Strength Means Being Fully Human? | Joseph M. Lenard

What if some of the things men have been taught about strength are actually making it harder to live honestly? In this episode of Mind Over Masculinity, Swati sits down with author, podcaster and songwriter Joseph M. Lenard for a candid conversation about masculinity, vulnerability, emotional expression, personal responsibility and the expectations men inherit about what it means to be strong. Joseph pushes back against blanket judgments about masculinity while also questioning the belief that strength requires men to suppress every difficult emotion. His perspective makes room for both vulnerability and responsibility: people can have difficult days, express emotion and need support while still taking ownership of how they show up in their lives. One of the central ideas Joseph introduces is what he calls the "Mirror Moment." Inspired partly by the idea of looking at the person in the mirror and asking them to change, it is a practice of honest self-reflection: Who am I becoming? What patterns am I repeating? What can I actually control? What do I want to change? The conversation explores where traditional messages such as "man up" and "boys don't cry" come from, how nature and nurture shape identity, and what happens when beliefs learned early in life follow men into relationships, friendships and the workplace. Joseph also argues that changing doesn't mean completely rejecting who you used to be. Growth can simply mean becoming more conscious of your choices, taking responsibility for what you can control and deciding which parts of an inherited definition of masculinity still deserve a place in your life. About Joseph M. Lenard:Joseph M. Lenard is an author, blogger, podcaster, songwriter and former information technology professional from Michigan. His writing includes the Life and Living series, whose books explore themes including resilience, grief, legacy, personal responsibility and making intentional choices about how we live. His 2026 book Roller Coasters: The Life Kind uses the metaphor of an amusement park ride to explore grief, guilt, loss and continuing to engage with life after painful experiences. Joseph is also the host of ChristiTutionalist Politics and creates original music, including "Hectic Living." Key Takeaways:Strength and vulnerability don't automatically have to be opposites. One difficult day shouldn't become a judgment about someone's entire character.Ideas about masculinity are influenced by both cultural expectations and personal upbringing.Messages learned early in life can follow men into adulthood, work and relationships.Joseph's "Mirror Moment" encourages men to examine themselves honestly instead of automatically blaming circumstances or other people.Awareness creates the possibility of choice. Recognizing a learned pattern means you can begin deciding whether you still want it.Personal growth requires responsibility alongside self-reflection.Changing doesn't mean completely rejecting your previous identity. The people around us can reinforce either healthier patterns or behaviors we're trying to leave behind.Falling into an old pattern during a difficult day doesn't erase the awareness or progress already made.Joseph emphasizes everyday kindness and human connection as small ways people can make difficult or ordinary days better. Toxic Masculinity Explained: Emotional Intelligence and Healthy Masculinity, with Sloane Carlson

If the phrase toxic masculinity makes you feel defensive before you even hear the rest of the sentence, this episode is for you. Licensed counselor Sloane Carlson joins Swati on Mind Over Masculinity to unpack what that phrase actually means, and why understanding it has nothing to do with blame. Sloane explains where rigid ideas about strength come from, how they take root before age six, and what healthy masculinity looks like when emotional range is restored instead of locked away. About the Guest: Sloane Carlson is a licensed counselor who has practiced clinically for 15 years, including work in substance addiction treatment. For the past six years she has run a private practice, Begin Life Counseling, focused on attachment disorders, low self-esteem, and relational grief. She is based in the Austin, Texas area. Key Takeaways: Toxic masculinity isn't a claim that masculinity itself is toxic; it points to suppressed emotion and rigid norms.Defensiveness usually means the comment touched something already unresolved inside, not that it was a personal attack. Most patterns around masculinity form by around age six, often passed down without anyone intending to teach them.Healthy masculinity looks like emotional access without losing strength, saying I'm struggling and still being respected.Real strength is the capacity to fully feel something and still function, not the absence of feeling at all.Change happens gradually through small permissions, not one dramatic breakthrough moment. Redefining Strength Beyond Gender Norms With Brigitta Dau

If strength has always meant staying strict with yourself and never showing weakness, this episode is for you. Life coach and Reiki master Brigitta Dau joins Swati on Mind Over Masculinity to unpack where our narrow ideas about strength actually come from. Brigitta explains how masculine and feminine energy work together, why perfectionism quietly breeds isolation, and one gentle practice for questioning old definitions of strength without losing yourself in the process. About the Guest: Brigitta Dau is a certified life coach, Reiki master, Pilates instructor, and crafting teacher based in Los Angeles, California. She co-authored Landing on Your North Star and works with people one-on-one and in groups, both in person and online. Key Takeaways: Masculine energy doesn't have to mean power over others; it can be a steady, grounded space holder.Perfectionism often gets rewarded early in life, but it quietly breeds isolation and self-loathing.Rigid ideas about strength show up as defensiveness, needing to be right, and closed assumptions about people.Start by getting curious with yourself, asking gently what's really going on instead of scolding yourself.Setting new boundaries will feel uncomfortable at first because it's unfamiliar, not because it's wrong.Growth is not a straight line; side steps and setbacks are simply data to learn from, not failure.
