5780 — VaEra: The Name El Shaddai

5780 — VaEra: The Name El Shaddai

After the failure of Moshe's mission to Pharaoh to free the Israelite slaves, God indicates that He will intervene forcefully. While He had appeared to the patriarchs and matriarchs employing the name El Shaddai, He will now make his name Y-H-V-H known to Israel. The commentaries grapple with these different names of God and in this podcast Rabbi Michael Hattin considers the thought-provoking formulation of the Ramban (Nachmanides).

5780 — Shemot: Who are You–What is Your Name?

5780 — Shemot: Who are You–What is Your Name?

This week we begin a new book--Shemot or "names." It makes much more sense to call the book "Exodus" since most of the book describes the process of the Jewish people going from slavery to freedom--their struggle to leave Egypt and come to the Promised land. In this podcast, Rabbi Schweiger examines the significance of names in shaping identity and creating relationships among people and between people and God. Rabbi Schweiger discusses how names are at the very core of the redemption process.

5780 — Vayehi: Family Dynamics at the End of Jacob’s Life: Not What We Expected

At the end of the book of Bereishit, Jacob's life comes to an end. As Jacob moves to bless two of his grandchildren, Jacob and Joseph engage in what might be considered to be less than a smooth exchange. Then, when Jacob dies, Joseph's brothers consider their next move. Once again, the narrative presents some uncomfortable communication between the brothers.

5780 — Vayigash: The Unusual Persona of Serah, Daughter of Asher

5780 — Vayigash: The Unusual Persona of Serah, Daughter of Asher

In parshat Vayigash there is a tantalizingly elusive reference to Serah the daughter of Asher. No other granddaughters of Jacob are mentioned and women in general are scarce from this point in the narrative until the end of the Torah. Why was she singled out? Midrashic narrative weaves together fascinating traditions to give us a rich portrait of an unusual woman.
