The ongoing battle over asylum in America

The U.S. has long professed to be a country where people can seek refuge. That's the promise etched into the base of the Statue of Liberty. But it's never been that clear-cut. And in June, the Supreme Court passed two rulings that could make seeking safe haven in the U.S. even more difficult.  Today on the show, the story of how the U.S. asylum system was forged in response to moments of crisis, and where it left gaps: from Jewish refugees fleeing the Holocaust, to Cuban and Haitian asylum seekers during the Cold War, to the precarious system of today. This episode originally aired in December 2024. Guests: Maria Cristina Garcia, Professor of History at Cornell University, studying immigrants, refugees, and asylum seekers Ruth Wasem, former Immigration Policy Specialist at the U.S. Library of Congress' Congressional Research Service and author of the forthcoming book, The Struggle for Fairness: Forging the Immigration Act of 1965 Support shows like Throughline with NPR+. General Videla Part 1: The Skinny One and the Witch

But no one can imagine just how deeply he will impact Argentina over the next 87 years… A Noiser production, written by John Bartlett. Ken Burns on Why America Really Declared Independence

Was the war really about taxation, or was land the deeper cause of America’s break with Britain? Legendary documentary-maker Ken Burns joins Dominic to discuss the American Revolution and the myths that still surround it. They explore George III, slavery, the role of France, and whether the United States could ever have won independence without foreign help. Ken also explains why George Washington, despite his flaws, was the one figure without whom America could not have existed. A wide-ranging conversation about liberty, hypocrisy, empire, and the revolution that Britain forgot but America turned into its founding story. PLUS, in this extended interview, enjoy the members Q&A at the end. ------ Twitter: @TheRestHistory @holland_tom @dcsandbrook ------ Video Editors: Jack Meek, Harry Swan + Adam Thornton Social Producer: Harry Balden Producers: Tabby Syrett & Aaliyah Akude Senior Producer: Callum Hill Executive Producer: Dom Johnson

    The Brink’s-Mat Robbery

The Brink’s-Mat robbery was one of the largest thefts in British history. The discovery of the record-breaking haul in a west London warehouse in 1983 set off a chain of events that would echo through Britain’s criminal underworld for decades. It helped shape the property boom of the 1980s, the drugs trade of the 1990s and left an enduring mark on UK crime and policing.   But who were the men behind the so-called robbery of the century? Why did the tentacles of the theft reach so far? And what is the “curse of Brink’s-Mat”? This is a Short History Of the Brink’s-Mat Robbery. A Noiser podcast production. Hosted by John Hopkins. With thanks to Wensley Clarkson, author of The Curse of Brink’s-Mat: 25 years of Murder and Mayhem. And be sure to check us out on Instagram (https://www.instagram.com/haviv.rettig.gur/) and TikTok (https://www.tiktok.com/@haviv.rettig.gur). -- Is the Iranian regime finally on the path toward collapse? In this episode, Iran-born political analyst Armin Navabi (from the YouTube channel Liberty Politics) takes us inside the mind of the Iranian people and the fractured Islamic Republic. We break down the four warring factions within the regime, the controversial strategy behind the Trump MOU (and why it might be doing more harm to the regime than the war itself), and why the Iranian resistance rallied behind Reza Pahlavi. Plus, why arming the Iranian people might achieve what air strikes could not. -- This episode is sponsored by Torie Sepah and Ron Shatzmiller, husband and wife physicians, who run the Pasadena Neuropsychiatry Center in California. They are proud to be one of the few elite providers of Brainsway Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation, an Israeli technology used for treatment-resistant depression. Ron was born in Israel and Torie was born in Iran. They would like to dedicate this episode to the memory of the 40,000 peaceful protesters murdered by the Iranian regime. -- If you like what we do here, please consider joining our Patreon community at https://www.patreon.com/c/AskHavivAnything or our Substack at https://havivgur.substack.com/.
