100: Kathryn Sharman on The Second Home, Psychological Suspense and Small-Town Secrets

In this episode of In My Good Books, I’m joined once again by bestselling psychological thriller author Kathryn Sharman to chat about her brilliant new novel, The Second Home. Following the success of The Family at Number 23, Kathryn returns with another domestic suspense novel — this time set in a coastal community where simmering tensions around tourism, second homes and privilege threaten to boil over. We discuss the inspiration behind the story, including Kathryn’s own holiday experience that sparked the initial idea, and why she wanted to explore the complicated reality of tourism in seaside towns. We also chat about creating morally complex female characters, why homes and property have become such a strong part of Kathryn’s author brand, and how she builds atmosphere and setting into her thrillers. Plus, we discuss: The nuance of second-home ownership and Airbnb cultureWriting characters readers don’t always know whether to trustThe strange experience of friends and family reading your workKathryn’s new two-book dealIf you love psychological thrillers packed with secrets, tension, family drama and beautifully observed social commentary, this is an episode you won’t want to miss. 15. The Poppy War by R.F. Kuang

This fortnight J & K are discussing The Poppy War by R.F. Kuang. We’re diverting a bit from our usual YA Fantasy books. This book is definitely for adults, and not for the faint of heart! The characters are complicated, the story is complex and violent, and there is a ton of action. Content Warning: In this episode we discuss drug use, rape, genocide, and other instances of extreme violence.  ChildHelp – Child Abuse – Call 1-800-422-4453 for assistance We apologize ahead of time for any mispronounced words, names, and/or places. As is usual, we referenced quite a few things, and you can find more information below! Shamanism Drug traditions from around the world and hallucinogenic drugs The history of The War on Drugs in the US K mentioned the Nanjing Massacre and the implications it has on this story Hannah Arendt’s Eichman in Jerusalem: A Report on the Banality of Evil There is a ton of information out there about how much of our brain we use, and it seems like maybe doctors aren’t in agreement, but 10% is apparently a very low number (and in case you’re interested and need something light hearted after reading this book, here is that video of Ken Jeong answering medical questions J mentioned) We talked a lot about religion, which in China is quite diverse and varied. Here is information about the current state of religion in China, religion in China in general, Chinese folk religion, Chinese mythology, and Han Chinese (which is an ethnic group, which may have influenced some of the religious aspects of the story). Transcript to come Spring 2021 As always, we’d love to be in discussion with you, magical folx. Post or tweet about the show using #criticallyreading. Braiding Sweetgrass by Robin Wall Kimmerer

No one is more surprised than Robin Wall Kimmerer that the book of essays she sent unsolicited to a small nonprofit publisher became one of the biggest word-of-mouth sensations of the 21st century so far. Jeff and Rebecca trace the Braiding Sweetgrass phenomenon and reflect on the ways Kimmerer blends Indigenous philosophy and practice with scientific knowledge to imagine new ways of living together and responding to environmental crises. Cambridge History of English Literature Volume 1 From the Beginnings to the Cycles of Romance - Various - Part 3

In the preliminary statement of the aims and objects of this History, communicated to those who were invited to become contributors to it, the editors emphasised the following purpose of their undertaking: A connected account was to be given of the successive movements of English literature, both main and subsidiary; and this was intended to imply an adequate treatment of secondary writers, instead of their being overshadowed by a few great names. - Summary by Preface
